the most amazing part of this for me is that Tom Jones’ voice is 99% in tact from when he was in his 20’s. Jesus, ive never heard an 80 year old sound that good. and with zero prep and totally spontaneous

Well there was Tony Bennett who was recording albums with current artists until he was almost 90. But Tony didn't do the things Tom has done. Though I am sure Tony created quite a swath as he has moved through his life. To hear Sir Tom's voice even for a little bit was a thrill. The time he has spent on that show is some of the best on TV. In fact it is really the only reason I watch. I watch the kids version quite a bit because it hasn't yet become sullied. And every now and then you find a Gracie-Jayne Fitzgerald from Sir Toms stomping grounds, Wales. She is going to be special. It would be a fun thing to have Tom sing with Gracie.

His father Lonnie wrote it indeed. When Lonnie brought the single out it wasn't a succes. (1962) At some point Tom Jones heard about the song and asked Lonnie if he could bring it out as a single as well. (since no one knew Lonnie even brought it out. Tom Jones brought it out in 1967 and it hit number 2 in the charts. In 1976 Elvis Presley brought this song out with permission of Lonnie as well (since he heard Tom Jones singing it and Tom and Elvis knew each other).

Peter, I remember being very young and my Grandad taking me to my first ever live concert to see your dad! At the time I believed I was his biggest fan! I probably was his youngest seeing as I'm only 26 now! I remember you coming on the stage and singing before your dad came on and I was just amazed the whole night and for weeks after. Your dad was a massive part of me growing up much to my mother's dismay wondering why I couldn't grow up like a normal kid and listen to the spice girls. Instead I was blasting out all of Lonnie's classics 🤣. When this was first broadcast he rang me straight away and said "get the voice on Peter is singing!" he didn't even need to say any more I knew who he was talking about straight away! My grandad passed away on 18/09/20 and we are having one of your dad's songs at his funeral next month. My tribute to him as we used to sing them all the time together. Even through his dementia I'd ask him if he wanted to sing Lonnie with me and it would all come back to him! Thank you to you and your dad for keeping my bond with my grandad as strong as it was right up until his last day. ❤️

Tom Jones is still fortunate enough to have the most amazing voice, there has never been anyone to rival his rich, strong passionate voice, the man is a TRUE LIVING LEGEND, Why doesnt he get the recognition he truly deserves, he has been giving us all such pleasure for 50 plus years now and has proved he can sing anything and put his own mark on songs. Why the heck hasnt he been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame????

@@peterdoneganmusic How I would surmise Jones' recognition to the extent I would have the knowledge to comment: In the US, Tom Jones has his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame., which I find suitable in that his impact in the States has been as a solid broad-strokes entertainer moreso than someone who would identify himself as or be identified by others as "Rock & Roll" In the UK -- Sir Tom IS the British Elvis, and it's not even up for debate. In the Kingdom, he transcends entertainment and rises to the level of cultural icon. BTW, to call your father the British Hank Williams would not be hyperbolic -- the nature and volume of his songwriting plus his influence over what became the British Invasion merits favorable comparison. I know you're diligently carrying on his legacy as you chart your own musical path.

Some people at the time queried as to whether this had been rehearsed. I can confirm categorically that it was not. I know Ben, who is bassist with the Voice band, and having seen the performance myself, I specifically asked him if it had been rehearsed and he confirmed that it definitely had not been. It was indeed a truly magical moment, and especially so for me as Lonnie Donegan was one of the people who gave me a lifelong love of contemporary music.

I am so surprised at the strength of Tom Jones’ voice. Usually, at that age, your lungs just can’t fill up enough to hold notes, as his did. I loved him wayyyy back when, ( because I’m old enough to remember and appreciate him) and I love him now! I’m also glad that I grew up with great music and wonderful singers, who are still popular today and still rockin’ it 50/years later! I really don’t think all this crappy rap stuff will stand the test of time.

Your Dad’s song sung by Tom has become one of my all time favorites and I’m betting there are great things in store for you as well. Life goes by so fast that, we sometimes forget to take time to embrace all the ups and downs. At seventy three I realize that more now than ever before. @@peterdoneganmusic I wanted to listen to more of your original music before answering. Edmonton has a very eclectic music scene. They really embrace all types. Several medium size venues in Edmonton. The Winspear Centre and the Jubilee Auditorium. Or a suburb called Sherwood Park that has a more intimate Theatre based stage that's seats 500 to 550 called Festival Place. Beautiful venue with amazing acoustics! I have seen several artists perform there and have also had the opportunity to perform there myself. I think you could have a great time here. Hope that helps. Great chatting with you.

If you read this Peter, your Dad started the post war " pop and rock" music in the UK,and some would say even the world single handedly and changed the life of millions of youths, now adults, forever.I saw Bill Wymans blues band in Manchester a few years ago and about halfway through his set he announced a number, thus :- " we are now going to do ' midnight special ' in homage to Lonnie Donegan without whom, let's face it NONE OF US WOULD BE HERE ON THIS STAGE " I had the privilege of being with Lonnie in the dressing room after that gig and joked that he had ruined my life " as I wanted to be a doctor when I was young then I saw you and heard you on that bloody guitar and that's all I have done for the last 53 years, played my guitar".And i have enjoyed every minute of it,me and a million others."Your dad just chuckled. It is gratifying that at last your dad is now being recognised ,and acknowledged on TV and the media as the true massive catalyst that put guitars in our hands and on the road to fame ,fortune and riches( well actually i got left behind ,but at 74 i am still strumming away, and loving it.) Ps, even the previous arrogance of the Beatles has diminished and they have started to admit the massive debt they owe to your father, the fantastic and great Lonnie Donegan.Obviously Lennon and Harrison before they died.
