Isn't it so true that once you understand the meaning of your name then you appreciate it more. I'm Ugandan and in my family (four kids) the only people with English names are my parents. We used to get made fun of at school then come home and complain that nobody could pronounce our names properly. I also hated the fact that when we went on holiday we were the kids who just knew there were no mugs or keyrings or magnets with our names on. Then one day my Dad sat me down and explained the meaning of my name "Kainembabazi" which means "she has the Grace". At one point during my birth the doctors asked my Dad who should be saved, the mother or the baby because they didn't think we'd both make it, but by the grace of God, we both did.

OMG meeting him today was so AMAZING he signed my arm and gave me a bunch of hugs... and I though we were gonna Skype with him and I was thinking *it would be amazing if he showed up* and he did... I was about to cry cause this video inspired me, he was so nice he was such an amazing person to meet and and I'm so happy my English teacher reached out to him or today wouldn't of happened and when I went to 4th hour I was missing him but at the same time I was thankful for him being there... It's insane that so many kids and adults aren't taught to be culturally competent or to really just take in other's differences with respect, even if it's off-putting or strange. When I first heard his name, it amazed me and I was instantly in love with it. This story is a great one ^-^

My name, Shakwana, means "to be grateful" it's actually a word from a tribe in Tanzania. I'm Tanzanian by the way, born and raised. Many people also found it hard to pronounce and thought it was weird. And i also didn't like the fact that it kinda fell under the stereotypical african american names like shaniqua, shaqwanda etc. But i have learnt to love it and know the that it has a greater meaning that i live by everyday.

I love when names have strong meanings like this. My name has the scandinavian meaning of Heroine which I love so much, because the traditional English meaning is just that of a higher clearing or hay meadow. People have called me many names under the sun when they don't hear how I have pronounced my name, but I just laugh because I love my name no what others think it is.🙂

My name means a prize after hardships. like being severely ill, poor or have been in a war and after that you get a prize of gold money food something like that. It's a beautiful name, and usually when I took to people they tell me that I bring comfort to them after having hardship for such a long time, It's funny how this is related to my name.
