Well, here it is nearly two years after the fact. You all are always asking us "why aren't you on HGTV?" or saying "You guys REALLY need a show on Magnolia". It almost happened, but it didn't, so as a Halloween treat for you we thought we'd share some of what was created along the way.
Once upon a time a couple of kids (okay, middle aged persons) decided to start sharing their passion for preservation with the world on social media. Those kids (Middle aged persons) got noticed by television headhunters. A WHOLE LOT of headhunters, all of whom were just 100% certain they had stumbled upon the next great thing in the industry. But as in all good fairly tales, there were some villainous types: types that wanted to turn them into something they aren't and have them doing things they don't.
But, as in all fairy tales, there were some heroes too. There was a producer who believed in them and their ethos, and was willing to die on their hill. He respected them and saw that they wanted to stay true to who their existing audience knew them to be. He and his team were AMAZING, and really believed in these crazy kids and wanted to make the vision a reality.
How does this fairy tale end? The way it was meant to. These crazy kids weren't willing to sacrifice their mission for some version of fame, so there isn't a network show. But there is a beautiful community of social media friends who believe in them, support them, and show up every week to see what crazy things they are up to now. AND, we are all left with some really fun reels with some really fun production quality that shows them at their zaniest. So, we guess it's a happy ending after all. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the TV show that almost was.

The half that didn't want your unique talent of "restoration" on a HGTV Program , are obviously ignorant about the remarkable work you've done, the blood, sweat and tears it takes to accomplish it, and the contribution of the restorations to the historical significance of each and every home, in every State, to the cultural education of it's residents. It's always a labor of love and we're just glad you're able to share your accomplishments with those who appreciate it.

But it doesn't have room for advertisements of modern stuff. It would be hard to get tie ins for advertisers. I'm glad they aren't on HGTV. It would just be more of what's already on there. Lipstick on a pig.

I stopped watching television 15 years ago; everything (ads, show segments, everything) was designed for very short attention spans which drove me away with a headache. All I watch now are long-form KZfaq videos done with integrity and accuracy, and not just renovation subject matter. Restoration Nation is one of them. Thanks for all you do.

Hi Laine and Kevin! What if GOD ruined your plans so your plans wouldn't ruin you? You both are the epitome of integrity, genuineness, loving kindness, graciousness, humbleness, compassion, forgiveness, patience, perseverance, and thanksgiving. You are also history, historic architecture, interior design, and historic restoration/preservation powerhouses; well experienced, extremely knowledgeable, excellent teachers/leaders, and multi-faceted in all that you do, and enjoying what you do immensely. You would not have been able to do what you do how you do it working for so many "know-it-alls" on HGTV or any other show like that. Y'all are supposed to have complete freedom, doing things exactly the way you do them now, which allows you to be yourselves.... effective and productive in all your endeavors and taking full ownership of them. Y'all are not supposed to ever be scripted or "directed" to create an outcome. Please stay fantastic always! It's what all of your subscribers expect and love about the two of you! GOD bless!

What fun! The reason I don't watch HGTV anymore is that they are way more about selling heir sponsor's products and less about any type of DIY. I know that there is a DIY channel but they have also fallen into the "just hire someone" trap. Any really authentic restoration programming seems to devolve over time into a personality-driven sitcom, wasting time that could be spent learning. I don't need to know what Personality X and Y do in their spare time. I want to know how to restore my own home. You guys were fabulous and you made the right choice.

The only problem with home improvement shows on TV is,they don't seem to want to fully restore a house. They claim they are and then they start taking out walls and painting everything white.White tiles on the walls and light colored floors. The only colors they seem to want to use is, white, black and gray.I hate the way they look after their done.I watch your videos because, you guys are authentic with the way you restore these houses.Just do what you do and forget HGTV.❤

Your content is better than anything on HGTV. They all look alike and not in a good way. Your craftsmanship & attention to details address all the challenges in each home. Lane, you and Kevin continually amaze me with your knowledge of these old homes and the materials used in them. Then you restore these beauties very carefully, so they maintain and regain their original elegance. I just love to watch you work! If HGTV didn't want to give you a show it's their loss, as they are missing out on your beautiful work. I subscribed to your channel as soon as I ran across you because I am in awe of these old houses. My great grandparents (Dad's mother's parents) and my grandparents (Dad's parents) both built huge farmhouses with 2 storeys and basements (in Michigan) Both are still standing as far as I know (I've been in Texas 42 years) My grandparent's home was beautifully redone, putting 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs that made sense. I remember spending family holidays in that house when Grandma would open the doors to the formal living room and let us go in. Such a beautiful home built by German immigrants (my Grandpa's parents) I'm 72 now to give you a timeframe.

Glad you did not go on TV.....I rid my home and life of TV February 1, 2013. Don't miss it a bit. I bought an 1868 home in Morgantown, WV in 1979 which the city wanted torn down and restored it (by writing a lot of checks). After moving back to the 5-acre property across town (an old farm), in 1994, I sold "The Ford House" to a couple who owns a business and just love it.

I’m so glad your comments are back on so I can tell you positive and wonderful things about your channel and you both. This was a lot of fun to watch and I’m glad you don’t have a show on HGTV. There seems to be a lot of things going on behind the scenes that I think don’t line up with your values and ethics. I like the way you both act with integrity and transparency. I think maybe you wouldn’t have that kind of autonomy with HGTV, which is more about ratings and $$$. They seem to like to create drama by rushing the timeline and completion date, which is not what you do. I love your channel and I admire so many things about you both and I’m glad I can comment again.🌸

Your tours of the historic grand dames are a time travel "zen" for me. You two are way too knowledgeable and respectful of history for HGTV and not "sell-outs" I get sick when I watch the so-called reno shows take out fireplaces, paint beautiful moldings, make every room white and gut out the personality of the original home. 99% of those shows do cookie-cutter trends and ruin the home's integrity. I'd bet the naysayers at HGTV were probably worried you'd refuse to comply with their demands to install an inappropriate style just for their advertisers. God bless you for it!

They missed out! This would probably have been on my top favorite show lists. Lucky for us you're not going anywhere 😊 I could see your personalities and several great episodes in this little snippet, kudos to you both and the production team!

I think you are both fantastic & love the work you do! I think HGTV would have tried to have you conform to their formula. You deserve better!

I love me some magnolia network especially their shows about old houses and properties. However. I am so incredibly happy that you were not picked up by them! Sounds weird I know but you stood your ground, kept what was most important to you which was doing the job appropriately and correctly and didn't give it all up for some fame. You guys are awesome! Your the reason so many people are saving old homes (and the treasures inside!) instead of tearing them down or gutting out the charm which happens far too often.

So glad your comments are back ! We love your videos and enjoy everything you do to save these Beautiful Homes ! HGTV would of try to change you into what they wanted we quit watching them some time ago. We are looking forward to following you on this new project HOPE !! BLESS YOU !!

They didn’t want to feature your particular style of genius because it’s too slow- you’ve said it yourselves; you’re not flippers. There STILL are not enough viewers interested in old houses, much less the unusual people who save old houses. I’m one of those who “ had too many kids” and drove a big van. It was a Ford V-10 and several of the teens learned to drive in that vehicle and took their drivers test in it! 😂 Yes ‘m nuts too. But that’s why I have the patience and wisdom which old houses require ❤ Love you guys. Great video. Keep doing your thing. HGTV just missed out on a great thing!

WOW! That was GREAT!!!!!! HGTV is stupid for not picking you guys up. But I’m so glad you didn’t because your channel is so much better. I love the interaction you can have with all of us RESTO RATS! We can actually get tips and be friends with you which we couldn’t if you were on TV. Thanks for NOT DOING THEIR SHOWS! Love you guys

I know I’ve told you this Laine but I said it again yesterday. You managed to make the dentist more annoying-ALL my dentist plays on the tvs is whatever crap is on HGTV. Ugh. It killed me having to watch that yesterday. 😂😂😂

Honestly, you should write your dentist a letter (not a phone call, not a sentence at check out, not a text message) and explain that you find HGTV unacceptable. Suggest a 6 months poll of the dentist's patients and let everyone vote. What a concept! Remember that it is only by putting our opinions in writing that we can make a difference.
