The1st time I heard them, it was on the Nationally Syndicated show "Dr. Demento" (later heard from its origin 94.7 KMET FM in Los Angeles on Sunday nights, when I moved back to Calif. in 1977), and they were called "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo". easier said than "The Ogden Edsl Wahalia Blues Ensemble Mondo Bizzario Band" :p I used to be able say that pretty fast many years ago! :D

Predominantly grunge, prog, and metal, with a ton of jazz and trip hop to round it out for me....but the second I hear the first downbeat of "Sexy Back" by Justin Timberlake, I'm hopeless. Gets me every single time. Just an infectious groove.

My guilty pleasure is the Residents. Oingo Boingo is one of my favorite bands of all time and I have no guilt listening to them. My dad gave me the CDs from “Only a Lad” to “Dead Man’s Party” when I was around five. Easily one of my biggest musical influences.

I love how unabashedly bizzare Igorrr is. I never pass up the opportunity to play them in social gathering and just watch friends/family become alarmed and confused. 😂 On another note, I discovered 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' by Gordon Lightfoot after his passing last year. I don't know how this piece of history eluded me as a Minnesotan but I listened to it a ton last year and learned about how Gordon would often attend memorial services with the deceased crew's family members. His music is way out of my ballpark but I'm grateful for having discovered it. RIP.

While I'm a big prog rock, classical and jazz fan, sometimes I enjoy a simple synth pop tune, like Men Without Hats or Ladytron. Simple isn't necessarily easy. For some reason I also enjoy the VERY 80s "One of the Living" from Tina Turner (Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome). It's full of ridiculous 80s clichés, but it rocks hard.

I don't think I really have any guilty pleasures with all the music I have, but there are a couple things that come to mind with albums I bought or bands that I chose to get some music from that I didn't really get because I already enjoyed them, per se, but more like I wanted to have them for my collection. For example, I was born in 1996 and even though I had older siblings, no one in my family were big into Nirvana. I had heard some of their singles over the years and they just sounded like an edgy, but iconic band. I obviously *knew* they were loved, and I knew that they deserved to be loved, I just didn't care for them, and at times, I was an ignorant snob and would say I thought they were overrated. I mean, I loved me some Soundgarden, AIC, and Pearl Jam; that's good for the grunge genre, right? Well one day after graduating high school I decided that I should expand my collection to get some bands that are iconic. Maybe i'll listen to them, maybe I won't, but at least I can say that I have some of their work. I got Nevermind and In Utero and decided to give the famous Nevermind a listen... and I enjoyed it! And then I really liked In Utero, too. So all of a sudden, Nirvana went from this band that I would tell people "eh, they're not for me," to "I used to dislike them, but then I _actually_ listened to their work. They deserve the love they get!" It's funny, but the same thing happened with Metallica to me. I only ever heard some of their more famous singles on the radio over the years, but never decided to get into any of their albums. Same as with Nirvana, I decided one day that I enjoy their singles, so why the hell not get some of their albums for my collection? Well, I think it was 2016 or so, but I decided to grab like _SEVEN_ of their albums all at once. I found them for pretty cheap, and Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All, and the Black Album are ALL iconic Metallica records. Yes, I also picked up Load and Reload... and truth be told, probably just because I heard them at the same time as their iconic earlier albums, I really enjoy Load & Reload as much as their earlier work! I've listened to Metallica just as much as Ozzy, Black Sabbath, and so many artists that I grew up listening to, and am so happy that I decided one day to stop being a prude and just grab their albums. Same thing happened with Slayer. I just decided one day to pick up 2 of their albums and loved them. There's a handful of bands that I have in my collection that aren't a guilty pleasure because of who they are, but because of how I got into their music. All it took was for me to actually listen to more than what the radio pushes!

I don't think I have a song that really fits that definition, but I actually had a conversation about this yesterday at work, so I guess that's a reason to share. I sometimes feel like Evanescence is a guilty pleasure. I shouldn't. Amy Lee is a great musician and no one will deny how special her voice is. But a lot of Evanescence songs have melodramatic lyrics, simpler instrumentals than my prog metal brain enjoys, and occasionally I wonder if Amy could even expand her vocal techniques a bit. But overall, they have a good sound and I don't like that I sometimes feel like they're a guilty pleasure. As for songs, I recently discovered several mash-ups on KZfaq that mix several pop artists like Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa with stuff from Meshuggah, Periphery and Tool. And I could not believe how cool they sounded. The rhythms and tempos obviously have to match up well, and they do. It is wild to listen to, and it almost makes me wonder if I care about lyrics at all. If you want to see what I mean, you can look up the Katy Perry/Meshuggah or the Ariana Grande/Periphery videos.

My spotify library is predominantly symphonic metal, power metal, and the various other subgenres that brush up against all that, which in itself is a lot of variety for any friends in the car who aren't familiar with my preferences ...so it's always amusing when a Taylor Swift or Enya song pops up on shuffle and I have to go "...yeah I really like some of her stuff" as they experience the whiplash of going from Death Metal to pop to new age and back to metal after

My most honest answer is that I feel zero guilt about anything I listen to, no matter how widely panned by anyone else. Born in the 70s, formative years in the 80s, rocked through the 90s and 00s, and I'm still sampling new, eclectic forms of music, as time continues. A lot of my taste was influenced by my Mom's taste, and she listened to everything from Joan Baez & Janis Ian to Guns N Roses & Black Sabbath to The Doors & Talking Heads. So I simply take pleasure in all forms of music, depending on what mood I'm in. However, with that said... I would never be singing along to say....Prince, Cyndi Lauper, The Temptations, Neil Diamond, etc...when I know my more metal-oriented friends are coming over. And I'm not going to be blasting Behemoth, Horse the Band, Slayer, Agnostic Front, etc...when someone I know who has lighter tastes is stopping by. I tend to curate playlists based on visitors overall taste, basically.

So, there is this kind of obscure band out of Charleston, South Carolina called "Jump, Little Children". Geebz has actually reacted to them before -- somebody asked him to react to what's probably their second most popular, but entirely ho-hum, produced for car radio song, "Mexico". The person requesting could have asked for really amazing dynamic songs like "Cathedrals" or "Mountains So Grand" or beatniky "Singer" or lovely "New Life" -- but instead went with the equivalent of, something akin to "Can't Buy Me Love" -- not the song you'd really want to single out if you were, say, trying to sell someone on The Beatles. So, yeah, I'm guilty for really liking a group Geebz gave a very polite "Hated it!" review to. 😅
