In this episode Daniel and Mick revisit the wonderful world of chorus sounds, chiefly around the genre-defining evolution of early Boss CE-1 and CE-2 pedals. That’s currently relevant because the brand has recently released its higher-end, Japanese-made Waza Craft line of pedals, one of which is the CE-2w.
So, we compare an original CE-1, CE-2 and the new CE-2w, plus a small selection of other chorus pedals that we rate very highly.
For good measure we also have a Roland JC-120 on hand.

I still have the CE-2 my Mom bought for me in 1985 from Thoroughbred Music in Tampa, FL. It was my only chorus pedal until around 2013. The thing I notice about the CE-2 is that it gives me a bit of a volume boost when it is engaged. But it has always been the best chorus sound I have ever had!

@cobowe Good news! BOSS have released the RE-2 and RE-202 pedals, which are a dead-on sonic re-creation of the old Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape unit. Stack a CE-2W switched to CE-1 chorus mode in front of an RE-2 or RE-202 and Bob's your uncle. Another option with this setup is to parallel blend the chorus and delay with a BOSS LS-2 line selector pedal in A+B mix mode. Total cost: between $480 and $760, depending on which pedals you go with. Still far less than the minimum $1,795 that Reverb sellers are currently asking for functioning RE-301's.

This episode will be my happy place for a good while. The Boss CE2 was my gateway into playing guitar simply because my early 80s budget strat knock off had appalling tuning issues and using chorus made the sound much more palatable. Lovely to hear the JC120 in action as well and even today, nothing really comes close to that epic chorus width that the twin speaker setup imparts. Excellent stuff as always chaps.

+Bruce Johnson Hahahah! Dan and I were having a discussion that relates to this just today. It's to do with the difference of being excited and inspired by something, and trying to demonstrate something that you're not really interested in. We're going to become increasingly disinterested in stuff that doesn't interest us, because neither of us have enough hours left in our lives to devote to stuff that does. (How's that for a sentence?) So yeah, that Totally Impractical Pedalboard challenge is currently riding much higher on the list than 'WTF didn't you include the //insert random chorus pedal here// video. Hooray for being inspired. Yawn to making pragmatic choices.

I used to have the CE2 and loved it, but sold it. I watched this video when it came out and loved the Waza and finally got one this week. I love it and I hear what you are saying about the CE1 with the overdrive thing, but you can get that with other pedals, boosts in to the chorus to acheive that. And Boss pedals are indestructible, I still have a SD1 33 years old.

ianA You can certainly get the same effect for that song through a Ce-1 or something like it. However, the Publison DHM 89 b2 is the rack unit used on Time After Time, and all over the She’s So Unusual record. The engineer did an interview online about it. It’s an amazing unit, and utilizes more of the delay type chorus.

Hi Guys - another great show. When I researched for a substitute for my beloved CE1, I found the Retro Sonic CE-1. To me it is "exactly" the same as the old Boss CE1, but without the noise, and running on 9 volt, standard. The guy who made it also supplied a "how to" remove one resistance, depending on if I wanted the original high-cut from the old Boss or a more neutral sound from the Retro Sonic. I haven't heard the new, more grey colored version he is building now, but the first original, came really close, and sounded better than the new Boss products to my worn out ears :-) Ok, is doesn't have the input gain issue, some love ... :-) Another small comment - to my ears, it sound like the Waza has slightly longer delay, than the CE2 ... seems (at least in this video) that the chorused signal is a little longer away from the original signal on the Waza. So the dobbling effect gets a little stronger from the Waza and therefor slightly more crispy?!?! Haven't heard them any of the two in real world - just an impression from you excellent work. All the very best - Soren BTW - Very nice to say hello to you when you visited Copenhagen - cheers S

Great video guys! I had an original CE-2, I sold it a while ago and made a fair bit of cash out of it. It was the best sounding chorus I've ever heard in the flesh, but the bypassed signal was so tainted by it, big treble loss. I now crave this WAZA model sooooo bad. I'm getting one for sure :-)

Great video, Mick and Dan!!! After the video, I was searching the CE-1 and the Waza Craft, and my choice would be the CE-1. But then, I stumbled upon a Rivera Modified CE-1, which would be my real choice if I could afford. It separates those rate and depth controls from the chorus and add pre-gain and post level separate controls too. The only ugly thing is the power cable. All those three versions (CE-1, CE-2w, modified CE-1) have stereo out, which I would use where I am using a handcrafted stereo splitter, right after the overdrive pedal. Many times, it would represent flutter imperfections from vintage instruments when the digital simulators of those instruments can't get a good result for that (slow flutter). And, back to the guitars, they would be awesome chorus pedals. Anyway, I should recommend more your channel. Dan is a great master explaining what the signals are doing. Mick knows some special tweaks too, and they don't pass unnoticed.

Another great video! But to be honest I preferred the CE-2W Wazacraft. Surprisingly I find the Wazacraft's sound very pleasing and musical. I have tried gazillion Chrous pedals throuhout the years including the Analogman, Neunaber digital Chorus algorithm, CMADMODs Analog Chorus and many others, but this Boss Waza seems a winner! I'm gonna try it out soon in a shop. Thanks!

Man, as much as I dig Chorus, I don't dig it. Then you play it and make it sound great again. That Boss Waza pedal is sick!

I am wishing you had included the Red Witch Empress Chorus. I do love to see that you included the Chase Bliss.

The Angel Wing really surprised me, it sounds really good. Gotta say though, that vintage CE-2 has the magic. I LOVE that sound, hands down my favourite. That being said, the CE-1 mode of the CE-2w sounds (even) better than the real thing. All around, great episode. Good to see chorus getting some love. I've got a CE-20 and having the preset options is so much fun.

+Alice Mason Angel Wing is a no brainer for an occasional use pedal, or introduction to chorus. Lots in the CE-20 for sure! Thanks for watching Alice!

Don't feel bad, Mick. I saw you play that guitar on the Anderton's channel and it is high up on my list of guitars to add to my collection. :)

I have played every pedal featured here except for Tone City and an original CE-1. The CE-2w is currently on my board. Analogman an amazing pedal, but I wanted a very specific tone. The Boss is THE pedal for the 80's chorus sounds. Running a low gain OD in front of the CE-1 setting nails that sound. I'm surprised the Small Clone wasn't covered more, it is a classic analog circuit that is inexpensive and sounds great.

my CE-1, and DEluxe Electric Mistress are my fave pedals also. Not sure if you meant the Deluxe, but close enough for me. you have impeccable taste in pedals, heheh. Love your show.

The Meister Singer chorus is a real sleeper! I've had so many. Pay 300 dollars for your chorus and go back and listen to that 100.00 pedal. You will not be dissapointed.
