Welcome to That Pedal Show! Please subscribe to our channel and visit our store www.thatpedals...
Life too short for long KZfaq videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we take a look at five different boosty-preampy-overdrivey-type pedals that differ significantly from your ‘normal’, op-amp-based overdrive. By ‘normal’ we mean the common and much-loved OD pedals out there such as the Boss SD-1, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Boss Blues Driver, Fulltone OCD and so on… all of which work in a broadly similar fashion with a combination of an operational amplifier (usually an IC chip such as the JRC4558D in the case of the classic Tube Screamers) and some form of clipping diodes.
These five do things differently… and sound very different to boot, offering up a whole range of different tones, textures and responses that can complement - or indeed totally replace - that ‘normal’ OD on your board. We’re not saying ‘better’, we’re not saying ‘worse’, we just saying ‘different’ and well worth checking out for anyone who hasn’t already done so.
Let’s get to it…

That Broadcast pedal is by far the coolest of the bunch - I wish I had more things in my life that work and look more like that pedal!! Too cool - reminds me of the 40's and 50's era sound goodies ...... mmmm, warm tubes and the smell of frying caps and wires!

Incredible. But; can’t believe you didn’t show, guitar volume cleanup, on the Broadcast. You can literally put this pedal in “High Gain” mode, and lower you guitar volume and achieve the same sound as the “Low gain” mode, and all the way down to glassy clean. Without touching the pedal control..That’s the game changer for me. Especially live on the fly. Love the videos!

the big muff fuzz is not an "overdrive" but it is a lot more versatile than one might think, and also, just by setting the pedal's volume knob pretty high, and rolling the guitar's volume on and off, that alone can certainly give quite a "boost." also, I've been playing for a long while, but every time i view these vids i learn a bunch of new things. the explanations are clear and useful, and the playing demos are actually helpful, not just silly noodling. really appreciate this channel.

I watched/listened to this episode when it first came out as I was in the market for an overdrive for myself. I made a note and came back to the video to hear the discussion re the Hudson Broadcast. After listening to 132 (!) OD different pedals I ultimately choose, and absolutely love my Blackstone Appliances Mosfet Overdrive. That said however, sonically, the Hudson is really...unique. It's hard to put the sounds produced into words. If I were to/do get another overdrive pedal, this would probably be the one - simple, versatile, beautiful.

I want the Broadcast now. I saw it on your board at Riff City this past weekend, and I remember seeing this video but couldn't remember how the pedal sounded. It does some of the sounds I'm getting out of my Big Muff Pi w/ Wicker switch, but more. Super cool. It looks like they've replaced Mick's switch with a knob to allow greater flexibility on the amount of gain. AND also have a dual foot switch version.

I've got a 1st version Broadcast like the one here. It's such a good Pedal. 🔥 I only use the low gain setting always on as gain at 11 o'clock ish volume at 2 clock then use a Nobels ODR1 Ltd Edition version on top for solo tone. Works great like that with Strat or Tele. Les Paul I have to cut a bit of bass on the Broadcast though as it gets too woolly vibes. I run it into my 73 Bassman Silverface which is housed in a custom made 1x12 enclosure with a older Jensen C12K. Killer amp 🔥 High gain mode on Broadcast I can't get along with still. Doesn't sound anywhere near as good as in this demo. Mine sounds way too much Treble.

The best part was when Dan ripped the wires from the LightningBoy. As Mick was explaining, I kept thinking, "you've got to be kidding-- 2017 and 3 metal cases for an OD...'system.'" Over engineering to the point of paralyzation.

Most of all... look at the size it takes on the pedalboard?!?!?!?! There are many double stage OD's that do better and take up less space.
@Robstafarian

I view it far less as overengineering and far more as keeping one's options open, regarding product design, such that neither one's company nor one's customers have to manage several subtly different variations on a design. Having said that, I think that particular implementation should never have passed the initial prototyping stage.

Well video games have moved into DLC (extra content purchased after the initial purchase). I really feel like this is what this pedal is going for. The pedal community, however, doesn't normally consist of preteens hyped from Doritos and Mountain Dew just waiting to spend 60 bucks on the next Call of Duty. Who knows though there could be some untapped market for that sort of thing if they released a truly unique sidecar module.

Your remarks about one of the pedals being inspired by the idea of plugging straight into the desk reminded me that John Lennon did just that, plugging into the REDD desk at Abbey Road, in order to overload the circuits, and in the process finding a new sound - the opening for the single version of 'Revolution'.

Indeed the devil is in the details. May I suggest the humble boost pedal as a good platform to start with. They all have similar controls and do not distort or drive the sound too harshly. I think the sounds the components produce would be most noticeable with a boost pedal.

This video made me think of another application of pedals that I've been experimenting with and would be cool to see a discussion of...using pedals to record and polish sounds in the studio, whether through reamping, using on mics, or slightly unconventional ways to achieve different sounds. All the pedals featured here are ace studio tools. Thanks for the video guys!

Don't want to confuse a OD or a boost like Ts9s,Rat, and million others but just a db bump with some treble and slight fullness. I am really impressed with the inexpensive TC Spark mini and have 3 on various rigs. The custom audio electronics is also great by MXR IIRC.

I would love to see you venture into the ambient field looking at extreme delay/reverb units ala EQD Avalanche Run or Transmisser, the Foxpedal Wave, Boss TE-2, the Caroline Meteore, or others in that field :) Loved when you did the shoegaze as it sorta put you a little out of your comfort zone (if that is fair to say?) Love the show and keep up the lovely work! :)

Ofir Shapira I love the way their playing is complementary. Dan has faster fingers, clearly has a shredder background, and can do some cool country picking. Mick has a stronger groove and blues feel, plus interesting chord voicings.

Both are cool at what they do. Mick is an amazing blues player but Dan is perhaps a bit more all-rounded but it doesn't really matter. Both are brilliant at their instrument which is the point.

I think Dan, when he "gets ahead of himself," is doing a pastiche of a speedy player. He nearly always accompanies it with grinning & laughter.

I've got a mid 70s HH VS musician amp with the 'valve sound' switch for overdrive. Universally slated as a crap SS amp but it sounds like these with the overdrive switched on! Transistor overdrive! Dr Feelgood! Costs less than one of these pedals as well I reckon.

Hmmm.... EQ boost, parametric vs. graphic., active vs passive tone controls perhaps?. Sounds like a great subject for an upcoming episode. Or perhaps multiple episodes. I have several eq's in my signal chain and placement and settings make a huge difference in the way they react and their intended function Im still not much of a fuzz guy but that modular pedal sounded pretty good. Like you I didn't quite get the concept or the execution. It would have been nice if they put an output level control on the main unit. It will be interesting to see where this company takes this pedal. Please keep us posted. Another great episode guys. Thanks for my Saturday morning entertainment.

+Jeffrey Weber We might do that. The danger is that it's difficult to talk about those things in isolation because the rest of the circuit all plays its part too. There must be a way to make it interesting, and not something from an electronics handbook. Hmmm....

Right. I understand. I hear those terms bandied about a lot and I still don't know what they mean in a real world setting other than that they are different circuits. And I've been playing for 35 years. I mean, I know what I like when I hear it....

Definitely my favorite episode in a while. Im really not into the tried and true overdrives (ironically one of my favorite pedals is the EQD Palisades). Sometimes i think my hearing is wrong or something because everyone seems to love these guitar sounds and I dont, but I liked every sound in this video. I would happily buy any of these, besides the lightning boy because it needs AC :,(

I agree 100% with the jack placement. All you need is that first box and you're good to go. The additional boxes just add tediousness and "functionality" that is unnecessary. Great idea but poor execution. I'd be interested to try it if the functionality was on the first box, because it takes up too much space as well. Hard to imagine it could ever replace my Harlot though.
