In this video Daniel and Mick are delving into the world of Talk Boxes and Vocoders, the former made famous by songs such as Peter Frampton's Show Me The Way, Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi and Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh.
We have an original Electro-Harmonix Golden Throat and a new MXR Talk Box to demonstrate that side of things, plus a Boss VO-1 Vocoder to talk briefly about, er, vocoders. Expect mucho silliness...

Dan is playing a Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard, Mick is playing a Fender Mexico ’60s Reverse Headstock Stratocaster.
The amp today is a Victory Sheriff 44 and a PA speaker to monitor the talk box sounds.
We're using a Kingsley Harlot to push the Victory.

After watching this, I discovered that if you crank your iPhone, stick the speaker corner in your mouth and play back a recorded solo you get a convincing Talk Box effect with a respectable amount of volume. I would imagine you could use an iRig type setup, clip your phone next to the microphone and have an easy Talk Box solution in a pinch.

Dave Gilmore uses this to great effect on the solo to 'keep talking' from the division bell. When used well and in the correct place it can sound amazing.

Excellent Video! Cher's Believe was Autotune. The producers initially said in Sound on Sound that it was the Digitech Talker. The Digitech Talker was more like the Boss Vocoder Pedal. A vocoder works by dividing the synth input signal into bands (at least 12 to be useful), then analyzes the Voice input into the same amount of bands, and then keys the synth bands on and off matching the frequency components of the voice signal. The first widely heard recorded use was by Wendy Carlos. I hope one day you do a video about bit crushers! Sample and bit-rate reducers are a lot of fun. Get your hands on a Frostwave Alienator (or ANY of the Frostwave pedals that you can!). Mooer do a very servicable one, as do Earthquaker.

You guys are usually great at showcasing loads of different types of pedals; I think you should've tried to get your hands on a Rocktron Banshee 2 (Which is a talk box that can do the dry signal AND the talk box signal at the same time), and when it comes to vocoders, you should've tried getting your hands on the discontinued Digitech Talker - I'm the guitar tech for a band (Electric Guitars, how great a name is that?!), and both guitarists/singers use this old vocoder; it tracks really well, and sounds amazing. MUCH better than the Boss you had on the board in the video today. Thanks for another great video! The ending had me crying laughing! Cheers from Denmark, Niels

I have the MXR talk box and I've figured ways to get both your main amp to play and use the talk box at the same time. I have two methods, one is placing it within a bypass effect looper or a blender pedal, I use an Rocktron Bypass Effects loop with a mix knob and set the output to full direct signal, or two use an A/B with a thru box and have a ground loop eliminator 1/4 jack on the output of the talk box. Removes a lot of problems and gives you flexibility with your rig.

Thanks. I actually learned a lot and realized I had no idea how these things worked. My respect for Walsh, Frampton, et al was greatly increased. Not because they had the skill to use these, but they were able to maintain their dignity while doing so.

Never have I wanted pedals less. Such a funny video though. Dan's gurning was hilarious and on more than 1 occasion, I thought his eyebrows were going to end up on the top of his head. Just thank the gods that the wind didn't change direction, or he could have stuck like that! Nice to see Mick looking suitably embarrassed at times! Good show guys.

When I was 16 I wanted a talkbox so bad, but hadn't any money to buy it. I took an aluminium thrash-can, stuffed it with foam and put a speaker from my old pc audio system in it. I connected it to one of my stereo outs on my floor pod, and had the sound coming through a tube put in a hole I drilled in the trash-can. Very rudimental, but so much fun!

You can easily send both your guitar signal to the amp and the talkbox to the tube by putting a TL072 Op Amp (or similar) as a buffer directly after the input jack on the internals. Re-plumb the bypass switch to just turn on one input to the tube driver and add another stomp switch that turns your amp on and off.

Still have my Rocktron Banshee talkbox... Same concept as this MXR device you used. Rubber tube up to the Mic, & through the PA, the driver is inside the little box, bypasses the amp when activated. Came out like 15-20 years ago, works well "for that sound", as intended.
