I think those parents might have been worried about the reason for a second-I thought it might have been because she wanted her daughter to have more… cultured friends. I liked both sets of parents happiness that the little girl would have a Chinese friend-and I think the reasoning is a little beautiful. Everyone I know who adopted a child has always made sure they learned about where they came from.

Exactly! The white patents wanted a child, and saved a child from living in a foster home(which can be hell). But also on top of loving her unconditionally, understandably wanted her to be close to, and be able to have others of her ethnicity and cultural background around so she can always retain that. THAT is true parenting to adoptive kids of different races or ethnicities. You wholly take care of them and love them, and also allow them to discover and be a part of their own culture too.

I used to work at a Korean mom & pop's restaurant when I was in high school. There was a family that would come every week with their adopted son from Korea. I remember he was 2 years old at the time, but the family would come, siblings and all (party of 6) and eat Korean food together, and it's such a lovely and sweet memory I have from working there. We would speak Korean to him and the parents and siblings would also try to learn Korean for their son/brother. Truly a beautiful family!

It's not just finding a friend also, it's potentially finding her a connection to her culture and heritage that they may not be able to provide to her themselves via a lack of in to the community as a white couple. I don’t think it was just about similar appearance. They specially asked if they were Chinese. Having a similar looking friend can provide confidence.
