In the levitating scene, you see the sadness and pain on her face under all the make up. It still breaks my heart when I watch it. As well, she went through some shit making this movie. Hurt her back from the bed jumping scenes. They actually performed that Angiogram on her (no special effects.) There will never be another movie like this, and what Linda Blair went through (as well as the rest of the cast and crew) is the reason.

What people sometimes don't realize is that Reagan was the one who snuck into the church and desecrated the Mary statue. And while the detector was talking with the mom. She snuck downstairs and took the crucifix and ran back into the room before she started stabbing herself with it. But what makes it so scary is we never see her do all these things. It is all off camera.

I don't know about the Mary statue. In the book it's very clear that black masses were being celebrated around town when Reagan got possessed. The movie hints it when the inspector is taking to Father Karras in the race tracks, but the books goes more into details about it. It describes things happenning around that are even more disturbing than the Mary statue part.

Hmmm, as terrible as the events are in this book and film, I have always viewed it as more of a love story. A devoted mothers love for her daughter, doing whatever she could for her. Father Karass's love for his mother and being unable to help her. Finding his faith in God again and ultimately giving his life for a child he didn't even know. Reagan kissing the priest at the end of things. Of course there is the whole demon thing, but, the strong theme of love running through the story from beginning to end , at least for me, seems to be more of the central point.

I watched this movie once when it was first released. I saw it with a Catholic friend who explained the Catholic specific aspects, such as the importance of the St Christopher medal (patron saint of travelers). The significant point is that the little girl had never been the demon's main target. The demon had been targeting Father Karras all along. But in the end, Karras acknowledged (by the squeezing of the hand) the Last Rites being spoken of him, and thus his soul was still saved.

@DuchessofSassytown

Another aspect that I think goes over the heads of people without as much Catholic context is the question about Regan's middle name. Notably, her mother only gave her one, and, combined with our brief glimpse into her personality, I think this is meant to add to the idea that she is an easy target for possession. In the past, many people would receive multiple middle names to prevent the demons from being able to successfully learn their true name and have power over them.
@davida7153
@davida7153 2 жыл бұрын
The main target was Merrin because he fought Pazuzu (the demon) in the past, in a previous exorcism, and Merrin won because he was incorruptible, unable to break. The demon was seeking revenge. Karras was already broken because the lost of his faith and his mother. He never believed fully in the posession until the moment it begun, when he watches the things that Pazuzu can do, wich causes to him a shock and fall even more into his deep depression. Karras was a tool to break Merrin but he failed and then he kills Merrin by provocking him a heart attack because, again, Merrin was wining. In the book Karras says it clearly when it happens: "You son of the bitch killed him because he was winning over you again".
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 2 жыл бұрын
@@davida7153 That is disputable. If all the demon wanted was to kill Merrin, it could have done that at any time. Killing a man is easy; the demon would have wanted to send a new soul to hell, which it could not do with Merrin. But we were shown that the demon had been working on Karras' faith for a long time, and Karras was near the point of losing his faith.
@JoLeeRey
@JoLeeRey 2 жыл бұрын
This is one of the best explanations from the perspective of the demon's motivation. It's clear 100% that was the devil's plan to strike Father Karras down and take his soul to hell. What the devil wasn't counting on was the love that Father Karras had for Reagan's soul and that despite him being tortured and traumatized by him taking the sweet innocent girl and having her speak as his mother, he chose to sacrifice his life so that she could go to heaven. It's really a beautiful story.

I first watched this when I was 19 and it weirded me out. It wasn't just the story, but the way they shot it is just eerie. Older horror films like The Exorcist, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare, are far scarier imo because of the style it's shot in. They don't make horror films like this anymore. Horror films nowadays seem clean cut. All these older films are as unnatural as their source material.

"Why are you trying to reason with the demon-mattress?" - Best line of the video The music is Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. He didn't write it for the movie. It's an album-length piece of music that was already released before they started making the movie. They came out with a single-length version, which got up to number seven on the Billboard pop charts. The movie helped sales of the album, and it boosted Mike Oldfield's career. @@rhaenyralikesyoutube6289 Same. I’m not anti-CGI like some practical effects people go to length of, it has its place without a doubt…. But, IMO, to this day you can’t beat practical effects when they’re done well. Our tech has come an amazing way, but you can often still get the feel of CGI in a lot of films/shows - to where to cover this some films/shows are tweaked in production to look more in line with the CGI to blend them. Which, in truth, is a fair and smart choice - again when done well - because of how improvements in tech continuously make older CGI more and more noticeable by standing out to folks used to the modern standard…. making the rest of the real parts of a film blend creates better continuity when watching it at the time and later as it’s viewed in full package.

About six years later my BFF and I rented it and watched it again, in a mutual friend's attic bedroom, in the middle of the night...and let's just say it hit quite different. The MPAA used to have an X-rating for mainstream films. It was eventually phased out and replaced with the NC-17 rating we're familiar with today. Several films now considered classics were initially rated X when they first came out: Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, Last Tango in Paris. Producers for The Exorcist were worried that the film would receive an X-rating and that they would have to make cuts. However, the MPAA rated the film R without any cuts required.

* Father Karras' medallion was a St. Joseph medallion. The inscription reads "Sancte Joseph ora pro nobis," which translates to "Saint Joseph pray for us". One of St. Joseph's patronages is against doubt, which is very fitting for Father Karras, who is filled with doubts, but regains his faith at the end. * The Makeup and prosthetic effects were courtesy of Dick Smith, an absolute legend in the field who pioneered many techniques still in use to this day. In addition to the more horrific FX, he also did the old-age makeup on Max von Sydow, who was 44 when he made this film. * The demon-vomit? Mostly pea-soup. Yet another excellent reaction video. You are completely right...back then a Rated R movie was extremely taboo back in the 70's. I was a kid at that time and the rating system back then was G was for kids, PG was for adults, there was no PG-13, and an R truly was Restricted and viewed an only a movie that either had nudity and sex or was so vile that only certain types of people went and viewed them. They later said that the studio went to some extreme lengths to get the movie changed from an X rating to the R rating that they wanted. This movie especially was very controversial and taboo. There was also a lot of controversy over what they had Linda Blair do in that movie at 12 years old, such a young age. When the movie aired in theaters movie goers supposedly suffered vomiting, fainting, one heart attack, and even one miscarriage.

The opening scene explain. Lankester Merrin a veteran Catholic priest is on an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hatra in Iraq. Alerted by a colleague, he finds a sculpture that resembles Pazuzu, a demon of ancient origins with whose history Merrin is familiar. Soon afterwards, after taking heart medication, Merrin encounters a statue towering over him in the image of Pazuzu, an omen warning him of a looming confrontation. Two dogs begin fighting and snarling at each other in the dust. [This struggle foreshadows the eventual conflict between good (the priest) and evil (the possessed girl), and also hints at the theme of "evil against evil".

Some great explanations in this thread. I have always wondered about the St. Christopher medal being found in the dig with the mini-demon Pazuzu figurine....an out of timeline object. It turns up throughout the film very obviously. The passing back and forth at the end especially. Also the Pazuzu partial figurine was found at the bottom of the stairs by the Det. after Burke's (?) death. It's the reverse of the St. Christopher medal obviously good v evil (religion v devil). How did it get there? Burke had it planted on him? Such a good classic. Great reaction as always!
@dabidosan

@ Allan Rose The clay figure at the bottom of the steps wasn’t Pazuzu. It was one of Regan’s clay creatures. It was used to place the idea in the Detective’s and Audience’s mind that Reagan has something to do with Burke’s death. Although we don’t SEE Regan desecrate the church, we assume she did that as well...again leaving her artwork as a “calling card”. It’s also theorized that the church is where Regan steals the crucifix.

There is so much significance in this 15 minutes and it kinda sets up and foreshadows what is going to happen. The ending of that opening part where Father Marin is facing towards the demon statue is like a here comes Good vs Evil battle. The dogs start fighting with those deep growls and did you noticed before he turned and faced the statue there was a strong gust of wind out of nowhere (representing the presence of evil) and the shadow behind him moved, almost as if the statue itself was moving into position and ready to begin battle. Late to the comments and I’m sure people have mentioned this but; the book is really worth the read. There are no major differences in what happens but, and this is gonna sound nuts, the book actually has a lot of beauty in it that kind of offsets the horror of what’s happening to Regan. In particular, damn near everything Father Merrin says is genuinely profound and beautifully written. I love the movie as a horror film, but in the book you really get the sense that this is a showdown between not only great evil but a great force of good as well.
