That's what I appreciate with Bonzo. Also, I discovered another one of his secrets one day. It's one of those black swans that you don't see if you're not looking for it, but once you see it, you can't unsee it. Here's what it is: Bonzo had perfect pitch. He may not have even been aware of it, but I was listening to him solo and there were a few moments where he had hit every drum and left them all ringing... that's when I realized that not only were his drums well tuned, but they were tuned to a perfect chord. There was no dissonance. That's not an accident.

@@TheKitchenerLeslie The skillful use of Triplets was Bonzo's real forte. I love triplet time.....it feels more natural.....to Me anyway.

steve gad has a very south american feel to his playing these days. sort of polyrythms which tipifies south american music. been living down here for the past 9 yrs so i really notice it. really admire his style

Gadd has an underlying groove during everything he does including fills and soloing that some drummers don't make feel nearly as good.

Indeed, an outstanding drummer. It is very hard to tell who is the best. In my understanding (just a listener, not a musician) there are many outstanding drummers! With different techniques, interacting with other musicians. Won’t say any other name (s) because the list is not short. Not immense also.

Playing musically is a great struggle for many developing drummers so you aren't too off base. It's not so much as keeping time for the band as it is supporting them, which I think is the main difference between and amateur and professional drunmer

Dave Weckl in my opinion is superior, more smoother & fluidity in his technicality.

Around 1:50 or so, he is playing triplets...😎🇺🇸😁🤘. Two bass drum strokes followed by a Tom-Tom is considered a triplet.

I absolutely agree. Drumming isn't a sport where mathematical statistics can be compiled. At the top end of the spectrum issues of power, meter, musicality etc. are tools these drummers incorporate into a unique style . Dave Brubeck said that one day Joe Morello and Buddy Rich had a "drum battle" that lasted all day, and I'm sure they both came away from that learning a lot from each other . I always thought Joe excelled in musicality where Buddy exceeded in raw power. Steve Gadd has a beautiful approach to drums...he's never a showoff, and only steps into the spotlight when it will benefit the music. I suspect any of the drummers at their level could imitate the others in a way that would be difficult to detect a blind listening test ---if they wanted to, but instead they take those tools and apply them to a style that's unique to who they are as human beings, the essence of all art.

Naa. I checked out Greb obviously he's a talent but I'm left cold watching. Don't enjoy to watch or listen to that style of playing. Dennis just has the magic of charisma, blinding speed, incredible groove, power, chews gum, attitude, better kit sound, and so on. No contest for me.

I don't personally see him as a genius, though can appreciate why people would coin him so. You are correct in stating personal taste. However, if you are somewhat bored by a musician of Steve Gadd's calibre, whatever your personal tastes are, then you are surely missing something. Personally, my favourites are Tony Williams, and Vinnie Colaiuta. The ability to suffer boredom shows a lacking in one's mental creativity. Anyway, would you care to share a few names of your favourite drummers? I'm genuinely intrigued.

Christopher Leiton Thank you! I see what you are aiming at :) But 40 years ago is really rather recent, don't you think? Lots of drummers over the world sounded much more dynamic, responsive, exciting and interesting at that time, be it jazz/latin, pop/funk, etc. We are talking 1976 after all. (Many of the basic beats and patterns Gadd uses actually existed 100 years ago, literally, in military marches, early jazz and in ethnic (folk) music, although not always in the USA. The sound of the instruments was different though, of course.)

+Sven Ekeberg my issue with Gadd and his followers is that he has a "sacred cow" status. Only he has feel, grove, etc. There are too many artists from his time and prior that do a better job but get less recognition. This video was from the 90s, but during his tenure he always plays the same fills and beats. Some people called that being creative. To me that is like reheated an old meal over and over again and pretending still taste fresh.
