That Time Alex and I Went Road Biking to Key West

Back in 2017 @The_Sampler and I rode our road bikes to Key West, which is about 200 miles. This sounds like an easy ride, as many people knock out 100 miles or more on a single road ride lasting only a morning, but this was a little different. In this video, I've included the entire trip as well as commentary from Alexander and I. I hope you enjoy it!

I don't know if you'll ever read this, but this video you made years ago was actually an instrumental moment in my biking adventures. Being 16/17 and seeing you guys have an absolute blast on your strung together gear really got me inspired. Your bungie cords and bags set up inspired me to just get out there, regardless of my gear. Bungie cords and dry bags got me out on my first over nighter and since then I have done countless trips including biking from coast to coast in my home country of Canada. Thanks for the content over the years and never taking yourself too seriously. You have been a big inspiration for me and I'm sure countless others. Thanks Seth!

Perhaps out of your budget but a bike ride from Po’ipu to Ke’e beach would be nice with appropriate stops. Since this might not be far enough for you, an alternative would be from Naha to cape Hedo on the island of Okinawa. Once you pass Yomitan it gets nicer and there is a great road stop which is cheap and tasty. The coast has a bike path on and off and provided you don’t ride after a typhoon, it is usually debris-free. I recommend stoping at Manza to refresh in the ocean or any one of a number of resort beaches. These often have jelly-fish nets but there is a fee to swim there. Public beaches are free but I would not get in much above waist depth without a body suit. There is a campground in Motobu just past the Family Mart on hwy 110. They have showers. The office does not have long hours but I have paid in the AM when getting in after dark. I don’t recommend camping in summer due to the heat. There are plenty of pensions that are not too expensive. Nago has some good ones just before you enter the city. While there you can visit Chuarumi aquarium. Plenty of places to eat either on Sesokojima or on Kourijima. Of course they have a nice buffet at the aquarium. Try “Taco Rice” which is not really Mexican, but tasty anyway. I never really carry much water because there are plenty of places to stop and buy a drink. Lawson’s is everywhere. (Like 7-11 only better) After Nago, there are fewer towns unless you pedal inland. I would come back the same way but there is a road on the pacific side too just more with more turns. I would also stay away from Aura Bay because the military is ruining that area.

I think you should do more of these retrospective videos. I remember watching these, and as one who is closer than most, I was not surprised that you, Seth, were somewhat prepared and not shocked that Alex turned out to be a liability 😂. It’s too bad you didn’t film your home life living with Alex TRL style- pretty sure that would make for an epic video.

I did the same trip from Miami to Key West in summer of 2013. It was my first real take at traveling on bike. We did it in two days, logging 125 mi. on the first day and I have never wanted to do that mileage while touring again. It is more important to take it all in inch by inch and enjoy it... much like you guys, I was not thoroughly enjoying myself. It hurt. BUT trips like these exemplify adventure. Adventures you can look back at and be proud of. My experience was also rewarding and it fueled a fire to put together the whole Atlantic East coast in 3 other two week trips in non-consecutive years. Great video.

I've ridden the majority of this route 19 times but I started in Miami instead of Ft. Lauderdale. Each time I rode it was as a participant in a fully supported charity ride, and not completely on my own. We had pit stops with food, drink, and services if needed. Nonetheless, your struggles, surprises (like that bus lane in MiamiDade), wonders (7 mile Bridge), etc., are all totally relatable. It's fun to see video of exact places my tires have also passed! Getting out of MiamiDade is always a pleasure getting onto the open road, and I've gone both Card Sound and US1 to Key Largo. Both routes have the + and -. I used to flat at least once each trip until I invested in Gatorskins, and after that I never flatted again! Congrats guys!

I dislocated my shoulder and smashed my collar bone on my DH in 2004 and was only Since watching these videos and other's for mbts! I Was so wanting back on a bike, I have had issues with my shoulder since that day and it popping back out so easy so could never get back on a bike or it would pop out when pulled front up! but went and bought a new Embt 2 weeks ago its been a long time and bikes are way different but feels alot nicer to ride so hopefully my shoulder stays in its socket! It's not popped out since 2018 now touch wood! Funny enough it was in bed with the Gf when it popped out again not a great night lol But the motivation these video's have gave me is incredible! I was never off a bike till this accident all what id done and it took a stupid rotted mossy root and bike went side ways and arm swung up! Horrible feeling! Everyone's says oh it's not broken you can move your finger's! Yeah but couldn't feel anything in-between my wrist and head lol it took months just to build the ripped muscle back up aswell! Winter months its very painful the draught from the cold winds gets like under your shoulder well that's what it feels like it's so painful in winter keep a heated pad on it if this happens as arthritis starts forming faster after you dislocate it the hospital said when went back in for a second time! Next time it'll be pinned and don't want that!

OMG! Such a memory! That video made such a huge impression on me when you originally aired it! I love you and Alexander so much, you made me feel welcomed and empowered on my MTB. That being said, I am your 1%er. I am a (now) 60 year old still riding Mom of 3 and to me, both of your KZfaq channels we priceless. I've owned a MTB since 2000, and that type of bike was pretty much foreign to everyone everywhere, including the bike shops! You guys were my inspiration and my information station and I'm truly grateful to have been watching you from pretty much the beginning! And re-watching Seth pop Alex's shoulder back into place was only something I laugh at now😅 (I call watching someone else on KZfaq having fun as type 3 fun) I also loved that you reposted that video! You owe this trip to the busted shoulder. But you don't owe the type 2 fun on the shoulder, you owe it to both if you. And your state of mind and preparedness. And you hit the jackpot. From what I can see, the best gain was that you are friend for so long now. I personally had a few of those (type 2 fun rides) although they were a day long (12-13 hour rides), but should have lasted till noon (5 hour ride) and they were one of the best. The learning, the bonding, the experience. Now I'm confident and prepared to do them with my kids or my wife and be close to the planed 5 hour mark 😊. Also hard times shows what people are really made of.

Thank you for this video! It brought back memories! I organized off-season rides from Santa Barbara to San Diego (210 miles), about the same length as your ride. We were a bunch of fit crit cyclists that wanted some off-the-radar mileage and some fun. I can appreciate the anxiety of making sure everyone's bike was tip top, because 12 riders could equal 12 flats, and we had to make it to the hotels on time for check in! But everyone always had a smile on their face like you guys, that's what cycling is.

As much as I love their newer content and the journey they’ve both forged to get where they are today…. This stuff right here is some of their best work. I remember watching it when it came out, I felt like I was right there riding along with my buddies going through the struggles and the accomplishments! Hope to see another packing trip with you two at some point in the future! Cheers!

I remember when this video came out for the first time, I was already a subscriber of yours, probably on another account at the time. I was sitting on the computer looking at my new "Walmart like" MTB because I'm from the DR, and searched for repair videos, and tricks also, so there I met Seth's bike hacks. Got some injury's after that but to this day I still haven't stopped doing the tricks I learned from him 😂😂😂. Also Seth's the one who inspired me to learn how to fix my bike, Wich actually got me a job and my current MTB, Road bike, hybrids, and many others 😅😅😅 Thank you so much Seth 😊😊😊💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
