The Falklands War was fought in 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom (UK) over the disputed Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The Falkland Islands consist of two large and many small islands in the South Atlantic Ocean east of Argentina; their name and sovereignty over them have long been disputed. The Falklands War started on Friday, 2 April 1982 with the Argentine invasion and occupation of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982. The war lasted 74 days, and resulted in the deaths of 255 British and 649 Argentine soldiers, sailors, and airmen, and three civilian Falklanders.

I’ve always hated thatcher, along with my parents, who were nearly bankrupted because of her policies, but I think that she was absolutely the right leader to face this crisis. The swift and strong response to the invasion put the Argentinians in their place and allowed for the dictatorship there to be overthrown. She deserved all the praise she got for this. Good on her.

Whenever the chips are down The UK can depend upon our friends and allies in The Commonwealth and not our so called friends in the EU and especially not France who had sold the Argentinian Airforce their 6 Super Etendard aircraft and the exocet missile they were armed with. At first during the Falkland war the Super Etendard and exocet missile system did not work so our so called French "allies" and "Friends" sent a tema of engineers to Argentina during the war to fix the problem and, as a result, teh defect5ive weapon system as fixed and the Super Etendard aircraft were able to sink a number of British ships killing and giving life damaging injuries to many Royal Navy seamen and Merchant Seaman including sinking the Atlantic Conveyer, the container ship housing the heavy lift helicopters needed to transport the heavy equipment and suplies as well as the troops landed at the San Carlos inlet to the outskirts of Port Stanley forcing the Army to yomp carrying their supplies across marshy moorland. Only one Chinook heavy lift helicopter survived and was inadequate for its role so the Welsh Guards were reloaded onto the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship the Sir Galahad and transported to supplies and the Welsh Guards to Fitzroy where it wa sbombed and set on fire killing 48 crew and guardsmen and severely burning many survivors like Guardsman Simon Weston who survived with 26% burns. I will never forget the perfidy of our so called French "Allies" and "Friends" for sending Engineers to Argentina to enable the weapon system against us causing the loss of men and ships directly to the taskforce and, with the sinking of the Atlantic Conveyor, the loss of the heavy lift helicopters that led to the loss of the Atlantic Conveyor -I dont blame the Argentinian Airforce for doing their job BUT the French Government and the French Government owned arms company for enabling the Super Etendard and Exocet Missile system. Statements like The Belgrano could sink the entire fleet, If all you have is this kind of drivel and your another Thatcher apologist there can be no discussion. I left 3 Para before the conflict and I would have done my duty as my brave companions. The bravest of the brave lie out there on Mt Longdon and other places and they cry out for justice but they won't get it from the likes of you.

It's quite intresting how you imply that Britain (The Royal Navy) was *invincible* and that we totally *obliterated* Argentina's Naval and Land presence. Land troops yes, the Argentinian troops were ill-equipped and unprepared once the British amphibious landing was underway. We annihilated them in that arena. However Six ships were lost in the war, with over 255 British troop fatalities. The most famous sunk British ship was definitely the HMS Sheffield (which was sunk by *one* Exocet Missile) The Argentinian Navy had State of the art Exocet missiles which could of devastated the British Task Force. Obviously it was Britain's military power and stratagem that enabled for the *Falkland*, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands to be regained from Argentina 🇦🇷. The sinking of the ARA General Belgrano (by the nuclear powered British Submarine HMS Conquer) was a massive victory for the Royal Navy and Britain and turned the tide of the marine battle. But we had losses and it was not a walk in the park.

@Gary Dodgson It's true that the Argentines made the colossal mistake of assuming that Britain, led by Thatcher, would not respond to such an aggression. Thatcher knew that if she allowed this attack on British sovereignty to go unpunished, then the UK would no longer be seen as a strong nation, that no one wanted to mess with. So under no circumstances, was this aggression be unanswered. Otherwise they risked more of these attacks, from other nations, and risked losing several more territories.

Yo, you guys were the bullies all along. We just lost kids cause the dictatorship of that moment wanted to get rid of them, so they "went" at war with UK (a deal between both governments) to get rid of the bad seeds. Didn't work, we lost lives of innocents, and a piece of land. All this because the Chileans were scared of a war with Argentina, and the Americans wanted a "democracy" stablished in Argentina. The people never had a vote in all this, they were getting kidnapped and killed on the streets while you guys thought "we wanted" to go to war. Of course, history is written different in your books.

For the politicians who booed when the PM said she supporter the governor of the Falkland Islands I'd say this , he had no choice but to leave the island and raise the alarm as communication from the islands was impossible,so anyway laying blame on that man is indeed misguided. I'll say this too Thatcher fought and regained our invaded land something that I can't say for sure modern politicians would. Margaret Thatcher will always have a special place in the hearts possible of citizens of the Falklands and for good reason too. As she said many times quite rightly you can't negotiate with dictators and tyrants.

+Aimon Cabral hope you don't mind but I will add a few things. Looking at comment boards on online news story's concerning the Falkland Islands most seem to still support the British control of the island. Most people show little contempt for the Argentinians until one of their leaders kicks up a fuss ( I have a friend who loves Argentina and has been several times) As for thatcher I love her and most people I know at uni (Durham) also love her; this however is arguable different in places like Bolton university. She was really a politician that had mixed voters so as an example my mother loved her however my farther hated her. It is also dependent on whether you live in the north or south.

+Aimon Cabral well you have to understand her domestic policies to realise why some may hate her (north of England and Scotland) because most of the north and Scotland has always been social because it used to be a manufacturing area. Margaret thatcher basically closed the (inefficient) mines which were based in the north ruining the work options as well as the prosperity of the areas. She also crushed the unions which were heavily socialist (and still are, labour) so many viewed her as a tool for capitalism. Middle class like her as a whole though as she made the south (London) quite prosperous with the financial services industry.

CMDR The Argentinian armed forces were tin pot compared to the British yet they did a fabulous job in attacking the task force. I was enthralled at the sinking of the 6 ships and the loss of 255 British sailors and soldiers. The US and France gave tremendous help to Britain as follows: 1. US spy satellite information on Argentine movements. 2. US field radios because Britain's were poor. 3. Stinger manPAD 4. USS Iwo Jima 2 was madecready incase Britain lost a carrier. 5. France refused to re-supply Argentina with Exocets. 6. France trained British agents how to sabotage the Exocets that were for sale on the black market. 7. French pilots of Mirage and Super Etendard trained with British Harrier pilots in the UK to show them the weak spits of the planes in flight. Without America and France, the zBritish task force would have been decimated. Read the memoirs of Sir John Knot, the Defence Secretary at the time. He tells the fuller story behind this hollow victory. Put simply, the Argentinian pilots were very brave and skillful and were a credit to their nation.

When you grew up hearing about the boogeyman, but you become an adult and discover your parents were the "Orangemanbad" crowd of the era. A jagged little pill.

The Argentine president is confident the falklands will become Argentinian territory. Anyone that thinks this is deluded. Britain will never ggive it to them as it is ours. God bless Britannia.

I am Argentine and I do not make any claim ... I only pay tribute to our fighters who fought against the enemy and did well within the military capabilities they had ... Argentina had 649 deaths ... but more than 323 died in the sinking of the Belgrano cruiser, with which the amounts of casualties were similar ... this demonstrates a relatively even combat ..... in fact it was recognized by high British military commanders such as Julian Tompson and Sandy Woodward among others

@TheRenaissanceman65 I BELIEVE THE SAME ... WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT THE TERRITORY IN DISPUTE IS LOCATED 900 KMS FROM ARGENTINA AND 14000 KMS FROM ENGLAND .... that gives a more logical meaning to the claim of the country that is closest to the disputed territory ... the automatic reaction of anyone who hears the situation raised for the first time ... will respond quickly .... THE ISLANDS ARE FROM ARGENTINA. ..by proximity ... HOWEVER .... I AS AN ARGENTINE AM MORE PLEASED THAT THEY ARE IN ENGLISH HANDS .... IS MORE ... I WOULD LIKE MY COUNTRY TO LIKE ENGLAND
