This Hollow Knight documentary details the development of the indie video game Hollow Knight and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how Ari Gibson and William Pellen became friends and eventually came up with the idea for Hollow Knight while participating in Game Jams together. Afterwards, they quit their jobs and founded their own Indie Studio called Team Cherry. After almost three years of development, the 2D platformer would go on to be a huge success, selling 2.8 million copies as of February 2019. Team Cherry announced a sequel called Silksong in 2019.
The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Team Cherry made and how the game started out as a top-down survival game. It also details how the developers wanted to make Hollow Knight stand out from other Metroidvania games and how challenging it was to balance the game’s difficulty.

EDIT: I made a mistake with the estimated final budget for the game and switched up American dollars for Australian dollars. The final budget came closer to 90,000 USD, not AUD. Someone in the comments pointed it out and I always want to make sure I get all the facts straight, so I wanted to correct it here. What indie game would you like to see me cover next? Leave a suggestion in the comments below! Also, if you enjoyed the video, please consider subscribing to stay up to date on future “How Games Were Made” episodes. *whens silksong* in all seriousness, the more we wait, the more hype there is. but i also think that team cherry should take as long as they need to be. we all may be a little disappointed by the final product, but we may be blown out of our seats by the sheer content. all we definitely know is that theres a lot of hype for the game, and if team cherry does another kickstarter for silksong for additional funding, theres gonna be no shortage of money. tl;dr: im super hyped for silksong, and so is the entire community.

Favorite game of all time. I've never felt like I could dive into a world and get lost in it as much as in HK. Such charm, everything seemed so polished. I get the perfect mix of wonder and curiosity. And the free DLCs on top of the already low price for the game just makes me love/respect the game and its devs even more. Hollow Knight really made me feel a sort of happiness and intrigue for a game that I've never felt before. Not only did it hook me with the art (being an artist myself, I was kinda blown away with the detail and love that you could see was put into it. And I LOVE 2D art with a PASSION), the music, the game play, and the characters, but it made me feel so excited to do EVERYTHING the game had to offer. With an OG save of 300+ hours, I have so many memories of the incredible first experience. It also made me have a large appreciation for bugs LMAO But I also picked this game up at a time where anxiety was really bothering me and I was having a lot of personal issues that I really just wanted to get away from, and HK was the perfect outlet for that

@@senza4591 hm..... I suspect they won't stray too far from the price of the first one. Not only have they said again and again that they aren't in it for the money, but they're almost guaranteed to sell millions of copies, just like with the original Hollow Knight. $15 times three million is a lot of money. $15 however is not, which is nice seeing as I am broke. In addition, the low price of the first game was one of the biggest draws. "If you have any doubts about whether or not you'll like this masterpiece, just buy it. It's fifteen dollars" is literally the phrase that pushed me off of the fence and got me to check it out. But, you know, who can really say? It's all guesswork.

The art style of Hollow Knight is so impressive to me. It’s good that they had an animator handle the majority of the character designs. If an opportunity came around to create an indie game if and when I become a traditional animator, that’d be really awesome. I have so many ideas!!!😊

great video! i still haven't beaten the game yet because i'm a perfectionist and i want to get the monarch wings before i continue. i think i have lost to that mini boss over a hundred times now. all in all, hallow knight has become my favorite platformer of all time and has actually inspired me into beginning to learn game development. this video is a treasure to the internet and sir, i thank you for your efforts.

It's very interesting how they utilized almost every one of their design sketches in Hollow Knight... imagine if other game companies used the ideas and concepts they sketched in development, instead of making a bunch, choosing the best, and leaving behind the rest. There's so much potential in every sketch, and while I understand choosing the best options, there's so much more they could do with those ideas rather than scrapping them!

Congrats on this video! It made me appreciate this game even more!!! I got this game as a gift on my birthday this year... and I'm obsessed. I love video games but I have never been too skilled, yet this game it's difficult but leaves the door open for you to improve easily and beat it. I think I hadn't spend more than 30 minutes in a boss. I lose but the bosses gives you enough time to heal, and hit and that helps you feel you can do it and go back every time. It's a challenge you know you can win, but you need to keep trying.
