When he was young, my father (not Jewish) lived next to an elderly rabbi and his wife. The couple would constantly forget on Shabbat about turning lights on and off so my dad was often called to go and help them😂 They were a very wonderful couple and my whole family still speaks very highly of them more than 40 years later.

I'm new to Sabbath keeping and am learning. I heard about not using electricity on the Sabbath because of Exodus 35:3, "Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.” But a quick Google search reveals that electricity and fire are two completely different things: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "There is all the difference in the world between electricity and fire. Fire is the result of a chemical reaction, a chemical reaction that produces heat and light. Not all chemical reaction produce heat and light and some only produce heat and some only produce light. Electricity is the result of charged particles either in motion (an electrical current) or not (static electricity). In most cases for a fire to start there must be a quantity of heat energy available to get the chemical reaction started. Once started the chemical reaction can sustain itself until it runs out of fuel or oxygen. In most cases an electrical current will produce heat and if it produces enough heat it can start the combustion process and there is a fire. Static electricity can produce a lot of heat when it discharges. The best example of this is lightening. This too can start a fire. So, electricity can start a fire only if it produces enough heat to get the chemical reaction going. But the two, electricity and fire, are still _very, very_ different from each other." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to this, flipping a light switch and manually starting a fire are not in the same category as far as work would be considered. For instance it actually would take more effort to stand up from your seat and walk over to a light switch than it would to flip the light switch on/off. So on either front (physically turning on an electrical device or the use of electricity) I currently see no biblical reason why electricity cannot be used on the Sabbath. I would love to hear other people's insight on the matter. Like I said, I am new to this and want to observe the Sabbath based on biblical truth instead of man-made tradition. Thanks!

I think the dichotomy is an interesting one but a false one with more learning. This is something I'd been struggling with similarly. I asked my Rabbi and the way he explained it was that the reason "man-made" traditions can be similarly binding to explicit Torah law is that the Torah itself gives that authority to the judges (Rabbis) who wrote the mishna, the talmud, etc. So calling the mishna, talmud, tanach, shulchan aruch, etc. "man-made" tradition is to ignore the holy authority derived from the Torah (word of G-d) itself. Also the term "man-made" implies any man but we're speciflcally talking about the judges' (Rabbinical) law. That being said, I don't think your argument about the distinction between electricity and fire is necessarily a bad argument -- but you'd have to take that argument to a trusted Rabbi directly and see what they think.

@@williamschlass6371 the problem with that is you can have a man say any stupid thing and it would be divine, no thats not the case rather they were given hermunitical principels to derive the allowed and not allowed for eternity and the electricty isnt one of then the reason u cant light up electric is because the combustion engine turbines in the main Electric facility responsible for electrical consumption for all houses.

You have made a very good argument on electricity. I wish I had read this earlier becausé I waited to eat my dinner until after sunset because I didn't want to use the microwave. I have been back and forth on keeping the Sabbath for a few years because of not knowing what to or not to do. I read a book on it and I am still perplexed, as everything is work. Do I let the dishes pile up because loading the dishwasher is work? Can I wash my hair? Does "cleanliness is next to godliness" apply on the sabbath? When taking a walk and passing by a resale store can I go in to look around? I've decided to follow scripture to the best of my ability by not working a job or causing others to work, spending money, not turning on a fire nor traveling. For now it's easy for me to say I won't work on the Sabbath because I'm not employed, but if I were, I'm not sure what I would do if I were required to.

When you say you can't do anything that "was done in the temple", do mean modern or the ancient temple?

The Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Yes, in ancient times. This is the one and only Temple Jews have (both the first and second one, in one place in Jerusalem). All of our Jewish laws come from things that were done in the Temple times, when Jews lived in ancient Israel. This is where our laws come from. So, that's why weird adjustments have to be made, in modern times, when Jews lived outside Israel. They do not mean modern synagogues. There's only one Temple, in Jerusalem. Hope this helps 😊

Shalom, Beautiful family, I love that you share your Jewish life with the world!!💙 Respectfully asking, which scripture this shabbat law is derived from because the only one I found was in Exodus 35:3 which reads, “You are not to kindle a fire in any of your homes on Shabbat.” In Temple days, “kindling” a fire really was actual work whereas flipping a switch nowadays is not work. Also, it is my understanding that fire is used to light shabbat and havdalah candles. I’m confused. Do you mind clarifying?

I’m learning, please correct me. How do you keep warm in the winter? I was told; that if a light is on before, or as you begin Shabbat keep it on for the duration and don’t flick it off or on until after Shabbat. I was told that the same thing applies to the heat for the house. I was told that keep one or two lights on dim light, but don’t touch them until Shabbat ends and don’t touch the other lights but I was told that for all other electronics to shut them off i.e. phone, TV, computer.

Man made laws ... that's all it is ... They never had electricity in Moses's time ... Starting a fire and switching on a light 💡 is two different things. In those days they had no matches... The scriptures say pay attention to the Almighty One with thankfulness and appreciation ... don't get distracted by your favorite past times forgetting the Lord ... Do good on that day, avoid even sinning with your minds!!! Don't even do your favorite errands, or hobbies, which might distract you. Dedicated that day to the Almighty One, in rest.

This is only partially true. We can't light a fire on shabbat and some electric devices light a spark of fire when we switch them on. However, with other electric devices there is no such spart. We are not allowed to use them because of melechet boneh, i.e. we are not allowed to built an electric circuit.

CANNOT keep the seventh day as Sabbath(rest) without having at first your six days of RESTING of all kind of sins after Matthew 11:28 Galatians 2:20 1John 3:9 1John 5:18 called as SABBATISMOS in Hebrews 4:9 original Greek. Many other verses make clearly that you cannot worship Satan on your six working days and then to worship God on the seventh day of His REST in Genesis 2:1-3. This is why in Hebrews 4:10 you are called to enter in HIS REST(Genesis 2:1-3) RESTING “AS” HE RESTED without sinning in any day of His 6 working days in Genesis 2:1-3. In Hebrews chapter 3 we see that the people of Moses was not able to enter in God’s REST(Genesis 2:1-3) and in Hebrews chapter 4 we see that also the people of Josuah was not able to enter into enter in God’s REST(Genesis 2:1-3). Facts which make clearly that in both chapters of Hebrews is about the seventh day Sabbath as God REST in Genesis 2:1-3. God’s swear from Hebrews 4:3 is repeated in Hebrews 4:5 against us as living in the same disobedience(Hebrews 4:6) resisting against God instead of RESTING of all kind of sins daily in obedience as our SABBATISMOS in Hebrews 4:9 so that in Hebrews 4:10 we can enter in HIS REST RESTING “AS” HE RESTED without sinning in any day of his 6 days of work. Since in heaven the angels of Lucifer started to resist against God instead to continue their eternally RESISTING in obedience for worshiping God, this is why God saw as necessary to create our seven days week as our perpetual new chance of having always a better SABBATISMOS(daily rest of all kind of sins-in Hebrews 4:9) for always better worshiping on the seventh day of HIS REST in Hebrews 4:10 Exodus 20:8-11 Genesis 2:1-3). If even after Matthew 11:28 Galatians 2:20 1John 3:9 1John 5:18 you cannot REST daily of all kind of sins you cannot enter in Hebrews 4:10 in HIS REST TO REST “AS” HE RESTED on the seventh day without sinning any day of His works. Salvation is through RESTING instead of RESTING against God. Only after your six days of RESTING and doing NOTHING against Exodus 20 you can enter on the seventh day of HIS REST to worship God doing NOTHING which can destroy the meeting day of love and NOTHING which can ignore the presence of your most loved Creator and Saviour. But you are not better than the Jews when you are in needs for a COMMANDMENT to be COMMANDED to meet your sweetheart and to REST doing NOTHING what can distract, ignore or insult or anything which can make you to forget the most special presence of your most loving Creator and Saviour. And those children of disobedience who already here on earth see obedience as slavery and not as love they will only scratch in the Bible to find verses allowing them to land inside the eternally fire together with Satan and his angels of disobedience. This is why the Bible make clearly that worshiping can be possible only on the seventh day and only having your inward man inside heavenly Sanctuary on the time your outward man is here on earth inside the church.(2Cor 4:16 Rom 7:22). The Bible never called prayers as worshiping because being inside heavenly Sanctuary on His presence of God and His holy angels that you will be so much fascinated in adoration and veneration that you will forget all your long shopping list as prayer and you will have only words of praising, adoration, veneration and glorification which you should see as prayers on the day of love for worshiping. Hopefully now you will be able to understand also verses like Exodus 16:27,28 James 2:10.

To me it’s crazy that people run for their lives to save themselves and their families and then their kids give them speeches about rights and such. How about values, loyalty? @@miss0petersburg are you like saying your sister is supposed to support you because you are family? if that is your question, then general answer is obviously yes. but like i guess it also depends on the people you're supporting. if your family has honest intentions, and works and earns clean and unadulterated money, then they are definitely worth your blood, sweat and tears. if your family judges people but at the same time they work hard and are honest and earn unadulterated money, then they are also worth your blood, sweat and tears. for being judgmental, God will judge them in due time. so, your family does deserve your loyalty, but not because they are family. it's only if they're good and kind and humble people. Now i just gave a generic answer. A lot of human behavior is also based on psychology and perception. People understand things and life differently. Everything we are we are because of others. I wouldn’t be here if my grandma didn’t escape by the teeth of her skin. She didn’t have the option to say “her wait, I’m not religious..” or “I’m of a different religion .” Nobody had that option. You people are so privileged, you wear religion like a fashion choice.
