The paintwork on my Porsche 911 996.1 Carrera might be shiny and new, but underneath the car is a different story. Now 22-years old, my 996 C2 is a tired 911 with a chassis badly in need of replenishment.
The 'need now' list for parts were as follows: four lower control arms, four tuning forks, four control arms for the rear, two toe arms, and two track rod ends. Traditionally I've relied on original Porsche parts, but the bill for all the above was huge and unplanned. I've therefore looked at aftermarket options for the first time, going with a mixture of MEYLE and TRW, at a significant cost saving. But are they any good? What are the common 996 chassis problems? And how difficult is it to replace chassis arms on your Porsche 911? I've answered all this and more after taking "Little Irish" to Wrightune, an independent Porsche specialist in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.

Great choice of mods/maintenance. I have done this to a couple of my P-cars and I always love the new precision through the steering wheel and handling improvements that these new parts bring back to the driving experience. Like driving a new car! Looking forward to your new springs and struts video. Keep up the great work!

Enjoy your videos. Seriously thinking of getting a 911. Couple of points - I teach apprentices and counting the number of turns when removing track rods is good practice. However, if you do this you MUST carry out a wheel alignment. Used this process on my sons car and when we checked alignment it was 5mm out (overall)! Any parts you use should be up to OE spec. There are lots of cheap stuff available but it should be avoided. Spending a few quid more is often better. Cheers!

I had to replace tuning fork on my 2013 991 last year. It looked like a rat had nibbled through the bush while I was out of the country and the car was parked for 3 weeks. I had opted to replace the part for an original part, sourced from design 911. If it was a slightly older car and I didn't need to renew the warranty, I'd probably had gone for an OEM part. They seem to look the same and do the job.

Okay. My baby is 20 years old-ish I'll tell you what I'm doing to my 996 TT Turbo: 1. Changed out 2 out of 3 radiators (in the front behind the bumper. 2. changing the oil seal between the engine and the transmission. Yes they have to come out, yes they are expensive. All for a trained seal :-( 3. Changed out the turbos -- fairly reasonable, at least they are accessible 4. Got the two rear rims cleaned up. Also reasonable. 5. Not touching the rear wing. Everyone's dies. I got 19 years out of mine. Pelican (I I think) have an aftermarket kit that was nearly two grand. A real one is not much more. Unless I am going to track it or sell it not going to touch it. Net will be suspension brakes probably next year. Last point I have the carbon fiber interior the sun UV rays are killing it. Any coating suggestions? Finally a shout to HERO MOTORSPORTS in Van Nuys. Owner races a 996, I would not take it anywhere else. I really think this car, for all the hate it used to get, is the best practical super-car there is. I don't want a newer one with more electronics, though I would like another SC.

No doubt it feels much better than it did but I understand Meyle parts are heavier than Porsche parts (unsprung weight!) and the bushes are of inconsistent stiffness and often a fair bit softer than the bushes in genuine Porsche parts, so it's quite a big compromise in such an important area as the suspension. (But I do understand the financial benefits 😉)

Hi Lee, with all you've now spent and plan to spend on the 996.1, wouldn't you have been better off getting a newer model (997.1) with less miles and in better condition? Just a thought. Peter
@9WERKSTV
@9WERKSTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, without a doubt for the money spent I could have quite comfortably had a 997.1… but no car is perfect and no doubt I'd have spent the money again on other bits and pieces on that car. The lesson is that no matter the initial purchase cost, a 996/997 or any 911 is still 'Porsche money' to run, and should be factored into any journey of ownership.

Yes, 8000 was a bit misleading, there was a bunch of other tired-bits work in there, including motor mounts, pressure lines, etc., but probably something like half of the price was related to the various links, including labour. It was a bit of a rude awakening. My car is generally in really good nick, but some of the parts are just really tired. My car is 20 years old at this point, so no surprise.
