The Telecaster is Dan’s favourite guitar of all time ever. What are the rest of us missing?
Life too short for long KZfaq videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! A little while back we did a video on Strats, my favourite guitar (Mick here). You can watch it here: • Let’s Talk About Fende...
After doing that, we received loads of questions asking for a show on Telecasters, Dan’s favourite guitar. So here it is!
A bit like me with Strats, Dan has a fairly narrow aperture of what he wants in a Tele, so don’t be expecting Nashville-three-pickups, four-way switching or anything else that’s too much outside of the vintage formula. That said, we do take in a bunch of guitars across a massive price range that have a variety of timber and pickup differences.
It remains astonishing to us that this thing that debuted in 1950 remains one of the most versatile, expressive and widely used electric guitars across all genres of music - often in largely unchanged form - to this day. Let’s hear it for the Not-So-Humble-Telecaster!
Please enjoy the episode!

I had surgery and ordered a Squier Bullet Telecaster to enjoy in recovery. It was delivered the day I was re-admitted into hospital with an infection. Today is the day I get to go home and see my family and also unbox my new Tele. This is the perfect episode to watch while I wait for my last dose of antibiotica before they let me go.

I firmly believe that having less choices most often leads to more creativity. Too many choices leads to overthinking things and not getting on with it. Hence, the perfection of this instrument, in my book.

I agree, for a while I chased pedals and guitars with as many knobs and features as possible and usually would end up just constantly changing shit around because it all sounded good but I couldn't decide which setting sounded BEST lol so it was paralyzing. Now I'm much happier with an esquire and phasing out the overly complicated pedals and doing more actual playing

Having more choices is okay as long as you understand these choices. A tone stack in a preamp section helps a lot as long as you understand the end sound. I wouldn't call a Telecaster "perfection" because there are obvious things that it cannot do. That said, I have been gravitating towards playing a Telecaster more and more because it's so simple and predictable. You work with the guitar more instead of trying to force the guitar to work for you.

Dan is right about the particular few components being important in the Tele design. Saddles, Pickup & Bridge plate like he said.. I reckon the thin ashtray vintage ones have an extra charm too. Even though it's been celebrated frequently it begs repeating, that red tele really is something special.. What a gem. The frequency output seems to be balanced in just the right way to produce such a pleasing tone. The other ones demonstrated are quite different aren't they?.. I find that so fascinating. Thanks guys for a great companion piece to the Strat show a while back. You two really manage to illuminate the points you make here and also illustrate things so well which is a testament to the natural skills and pure energy you two possess as people. @@CraigsWorkshop I own two early Squire classic vipes telecasters made in China. Both very proper produced. Only changed pu with a bit more bite on one of the guitars, that' s all I had to improve. Of course you can argue a good Fender custom shop has this little" I can' t tell what it is" extra but it' s not worth enough to pay thousends more quids for it.

Been playing a G&L ASAT as my main for about 6 years now. Absolutely love that guitar and the MFD pickups (mine has the small/tele sized ones). Took some time to grow into them, but once I properly started relying on my volume/tone controls… wow they cover so much ground.

Great show, guys! And awesome to hear the Tim Lerch shoutout! I got my first tele this past November, a pine pro-2 in sienna burst, because I wanted something for jazz fingerstyle that would be really versatile. The neck pickup for jazz is just stellar (I usually play it through my 76 champ with an alnico Jensen speaker). Lerch was one of the people who convinced me on that front, and in that video he wasn’t even using the Charlie Christian pickups. But speaking of versatility: I was astounded by how much I liked bridge pickup - killer for rock and even metal (I’m also a metal guy, and I run my tele through a Kraken 50 head and love it).

Love this show! *had to come back and edit! * So many great guitars here. That Jason Isbell really jumped out from the crowd. Sounded great. That ASAT really sounded great too. Man, completely agree about the tone control. I'm modding all mine to take the neck pu off the tone pot. Been on my list forever - one of these days! I love it when guitars from the 50s and 60s are run through modern pedalboards/effects/OD and whatnot, that Leo Fender, Les Paul, etc, never could have imagined. Yesterday, I was watching some dropped-D metal coming out of an old, beat-up 60s SG. Love it! Talk about standing the test of time. I just added the new j.masics Tele. Really diggin' it a lot. Neck is phenomenal. Only thing that needs immediate attention is that STUPID out-of-phase deal happening with the middle position. Fixing that post haste!

Show idea: That Pedal Order Show. Short shows that just focus on two effects and how they interact with each other, order, tone, impedance, single coil vs humbuckers, other considerations. Some are, I think, well covered like fuzz and wah, or fuzz and drive, but phaser/fuzz, flanger/distortion, chorus/drive, and on and on. Might be able to make them 5-10 minutes each. Then you could make a playlist of them and have them be a pedal order reference you can always point to in the future.

Love this idea! Will our attention span? Switching pedal order, I generally settle on what works for what I am trying to accomplish at that moment and then decide that’s how it should be forever. Sounds like a great chance for Dan to ever so humbly pitch switchers for small pedalboards!

Re: the pickups in Dan's red 63 CS Tele - you can call Fender customer support with the serial # and they'll email you a spec sheet. Based on the beveled magnets and stagger, it's likely what used to be referred to as "Custom 60s Tele" pickups in the early to mid 2000s and have since been tweaked/renamed as the "63 Telecaster Pickups." Both have approx 6.6k resistance and Alnico 2 magnets. Dan "may" be thinking of the neck DCR 7.4k-ish when he's quoting the DCR in the video. The bridge and neck pickup in a Tele use different gauge wire hence the non-intuitive DCR readings (neck higher than bridge). Either way, I have a 2005 CS 1960 Tele Custom with a similar pickup and it is indeed fantastic. 🤟

Great episode! The best tip for a Tele is indeed as you say to set your amp to give you a nice neck pickup tone, but then when you switch to the bridge pickup just roll back the tone control a bit so it takes some off the treble off. That purple Squier sounded really good too, held its own again some really expensive guitars.

@@benashton3691 Well, yes, absolutely, I wouldn't doubt it. The MIM guitars are fantastic, at least as good as any American (non-custom shop) Telecaster. I guess my intent wasn't clear - the "just" was meant to emphasize how great the guitar is at a comparative price point far lower than its American Counterparts. I love my Tele - best sounding and playing guitar I own (and I have Les Pauls and quite a few other premium guitars). Just picked up a Strat Player Plus MIM, too, and it's amazing.
