For those rec players who get frustrated with the third shot drop, I recommend just hit it a bit long to ensure it goes over. Then sit back, if it looks good, move up, if it goes too long, stay back and try again. It really should be called the 3/5/7 drop shot- you don't have to be perfect the first time. Just get it over and keep working at moving up when the opportunity presents itself- rec games don't count, so swallow your pride and just practice it.

Instead of 'third shot drop' it can be 'odd shot drop' or 'odd drop'. I'll see myself out.

If your fast then you can move up as long as you get to the line before they hit the ball. It just needs to be low and slow and away from them.

You’ll never get the drop shot if you don’t know the proper technique. Allow the ball to reach the Apex and start to drop before you attempt a third shot drop. By then, the ball has lost most of its pace and, with practice, you can place the ball wherever you want on the court. And, of course, drill, drill, drill!

Your a great teacher Kyle. Extremely helpful. Would you reccomend putting backspin on the 3rd shot drop? I do it all the time and it works great against especially lower level/rec players.
@thatpickleballguy
@thatpickleballguy 6 ай бұрын
The most important thing is hitting your 3rd shot so your opponent either 1. Has to let their 4th shot bounce. Or 2. hit up on the ball. So whether it's topspin or backspin, either works. I use both. I almost always hit backspin on my backhand and typically hit topspin on my forehand drop.

I am a work in progress with the dink return. I do not have the feel to drop the ball into the kitchen. I can return the serve deep to the server and rush to the NVZ line. Good question. The most basic answer is, improve your backhand dink and then it doesn't matter as much. That takes some time but it is the primary answer. Another option if your backhand dink is really poor right now. You can run around your backhand to allow yourself to hit a forehand for a better shot! Let me know if that helps!

You want to get to the kitchen line. That is the goal. If you hit a weak return the other players will be driving the ball at the player running to the nvz. Play smart. If they are about to hit the ball do a split step if you have not gotten to the nvz.

Raw beginner here. Nice video, thanks. Nothing at all about this game makes sense to me at this point. I've played three times now. Gotta say, playing from the kitchen line seems impossible to me. That seems to be the last place I want to be. I simply cannot react to balls from that close distance. Of course, I can't react to any balls but at least I'm not terrified when I'm back a bit. Anyway thanks.

Isn’t it ok to be a foot, 2 feet or so from the kitchen line? Do you need to be on top of the kitchen line when you run up. I been playing for about 6 weeks now and beating 3.5 players (you’re videos are a big part of my success) but I’m not on top of the kitchen line. I feel more comfortable a foot or two in front of the kitchen line. Is this ok? Thanks for these amazing videos! Merry Christmas!

Yes that is ok. While you're not right up on the kitchen line you're still up there and able to hit it out of the kitchen!

I do the third ball drive because dropping the ball means hitting it hard enough that it clears the net but soft enough that it lands in the kitchen. That's too much for me if I'm hitting from deep in the court.

Ok so question on serve rule. Can a person serving the ball start the serving motion outside of the designated side line center line base line area before contact with the ball but fully step into the correct area and then make contact with the ball. Thanks for any help on this question
@thatpickleballguy
@thatpickleballguy Жыл бұрын
You have to be on the court to serve. So you can't be outside the sideline. Also, you can make contact in front of the baseline as long as one of your feet is still behind the baseline on impact!

Hi we are new to pickleball and have been playing with one partner at the kitchen line and one behind to cover if they miss. Can someone explain why this isn’t good strategy? If I’m understanding it’s just because two at the net is better offensively. We do seem to do more running than most other teams 😂but I am surprised that this isn’t typical strategy to have one offensive and one more defensive player in a sense.

Truthfully, the best way for you to decide if it's a good strategy is to play one game doing it, then play one game with both of you up at the kitchen! And see which one works better! Part of what makes this game is experimenting. :)

You demonstrated it when taking a 3rd shot when you said something like, “Okay, now we go.” But wish you had emphasized when the non-hitting partner should get to the net on the third shot. I see way to many rec players charging the net the second they realize the 3rd shot isn’t coming to them. I guess they confuse the 3rd shot with the 2nd. Going to share this on our message board.

I completely agree! About the player not hitting the third shot. I actually want to do a whole video on this topic. Because there’s definitely some nuance to it!

Should you be running full speed to the line on a third shot if your return is short and the opposition will be nailing you with their thrid shot drive?

If you know they typically hit 3rd shot drive you don't have to sprint up but move with some pace and be prepared for the return!

I am so confused about the doubles serving/scoring: 1)Does each side always start on the right side no matter what the score (for example: if your score is 3 - 5, does server #1 start on the right-hand side?) 2)Or do you start the serve on the right or left dependent on the score - right/even and left/odd thereby making server #1 whoever starts the serve dependent on the serve of the right or the left? 3)After server #1 serves and loses and the serve is passed to server #2, then does server #2 serve from the box where they currently are or do they move to the box where server #1 was?

Hey there! You're not alone on that. It's pretty confusing to learn. I had a ton of trouble at first - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKphgpaDnqiUg6s.html Check out this video. Start at 4:14 in the video and that's probably the best way for me to communicate :) Let me know if you have follow up questions.

@@thatpickleballguy hey thanks - that was pretty helpful!! Another video gave this Bonus tip for Doubles Scoring/Serving which is confusing me “It gets confusing but remember this, the first server in the game for each team will be in the right side when they have an even score and on the left side when their score is odd.

Serve and stay works 90 percent of the time. There's a few players that drop it RIGHT into the kitchen everytime!! They annoy the hell out of me cause I swear if I attempt to move up they see me move up and drive it of course at that time I'm done.

On the return and run, better to return soft and long as the opponent has to let it bounce once. If the receiver of the serve hit a low hard drive they have less time to run into the NVLine.

Yes. I think that's a strong strategy. When you watch pros, you'll watch them hit it with more force because they're typically faster to the kitchen. But hitting DEEP is the primary principle!

I'm trying to see how that third sought drop shot is effective? It seems like you're hitting the ball right to them.

A 3rd shot drop is all about timing and keeps the opposing team on their toes. If you always drive the ball they know whats coming but if you have a drop they can't predict if you're going to drive or drop!

Forget beginners, I find many players telling me they are “intermediate” can’t drop the ball in the kitchen from near the baseline area. And that is because they have absolutely no touch. They can only drive the ball, which only works at lower levels. These players are usually hyper-aggressive at the kitchen often flailing at the ball and invariably off-balance. The other shot they never hit is a reset. They don’t have the shot.

Great Videos....but from the side shot, it looks like your right foot is just ON/OVER the Kitchen Line. I was taught that ON THE LINE is IN THE KITCHEN, but opponents have argued it. Can you clarify the rule for me? And where in the rules it's written. I might be wrong...
