In this video we dive into the inner workings and repair procedures for the extremely problematic VW 01M (096) and 01P (098) valve body.
These problems include flared or harsh shifts, torque converter shudder, Codes P0740, P0741, failed transmission solenoids and internal wiring harness (ribbon). The usually result in further transmission problems such as burnt clutches and failed torque converter clutch lining.

Volkswagen introduced the 01M transmission specifically for their Cabrio, Jetta, Golf, GTI, New Beetle models produced from 1995 to 2005, and transverse engine Passats built between 1995 and 1997.
This 01M transmission is a 4-speed automatic transmission that combines hydraulic and electronic control, featuring a lockup torque converter. It utilizes planetary gears, gear-driven drive with an open differential, and clutch packs. Notably, the 01M transmission lacks an internal chain and doesn't have a dipstick, a design choice by Volkswagen to prevent owners from inadvertently adding incorrect or subpar transmission fluid.
On the other hand, the 01P transmission variant is tailored for minivans and minibuses, capable of handling higher torque loads. It's typically mated with engines up to 2.8 liters in size and is commonly found in vehicles such as the Winnebago Rialta, VW Sharan, Ford Galaxy, VW Transporter (T2/T4), VW Eurovan (Transporter T4), MB V-Class (2.8L 2000-2002), and Seat Alhambra. It's worth noting that the 01P transmission is essentially a modification of the 01M transmission.
