there is an ever growing trend of people always wanting everything with nothing being exclusive, and I do not agree with it at all. there is probably a grey area where i'd draw the line, but seemingly everyone wants everything available at all times even if they weren't there. most things in life are exclusive, you are here, right now, enjoying whatever is accessible to you that many people have and will have missed out on, and so is the case with videogames. just because you did not have foresight or luck to be around for an event, doesn't mean everyone should give up their specially earned items just because you throw a sissy fit. exclusive items are just as much a reward as a missed opportunity. exclusive items show that I happened to be around when you weren't, and I don't think it's that big a deal since it happens with everything all the time. I am here right now experiencing VR, some people never have, I was born early enough to own a ps1 and play many ps1 games, some people never will and never have, some people are alive right now playing DRG, some never will. Some people played the legacy version and alpha versions of DRG back in 2017-2018, the legacy version is already available, should that mean ALL versions should be available? we can take this to the extreme in any direction, but my stance on this is that I WANT some exclusive items that show that I WAS THERE and YOU WEREN'T. nothing in life is fair, if you missed your chance then tough luck, I didn't, i get to be special in a way, cry about it. In the case of the streamer outfit, the person owning the outfit has done something you couldn't. they deserve it, stop crying about it and go get it if you want it so much. this mentality is extremely toxic that you just get everything you want without having to work for it while those who have worked for it must share it with others. streamer outfit should stay exclusive to people who deserve it and non-purchasable

I think the intent matters here. GSG don't withhold these cosmetics(with the possible exception of the streamer skin) to incentivize/manipulate people to purchase cosmetics. The anniversary hats in particular are pretty much just "I was here" stickers which would lose all of what little value they had if they lost that aspect. Live service indie games and EA titles are also very dependent on early support and players so giving something to those early supporters without whom DRG would not have made it as far as it has is a nice acknowledgment from the devs to their oldest players. (Side note, I think they gave out the steamy helmet at some other time, because I have it on my steam account that I didn't play on until 2021.)

If these rare items were purchasable from error cubes it would eliminate the luck factor (if you would randomly get the rare items), while making it so it isn't season locked.

Personally, as a new player, I don't mind that there are these exclusive cosmetics that I can never get. That's the whole point of them in the first place and it just makes owning them a little cooler too

Off topic from the cosmetics, but for the battle pass I think for every 10 or 25 levels or so after 100 it should reward a blank matrix core to help with the OC grind

If you miss someone's birthday, you don't get to celebrate the years you missed, no matter if you forgot or you haven't met that person at the time, you had to be there. I started playing this year btw.

As a hoarder and a complisionist myself I thank you for this but I can't help but to say that there are some things that should stay exclusive, specifically the party hats. It was a little gift from the devs to those who were lucky enough to participate and experience the game at the time, and in the end it is more of a badge of honor then an actual cosmetic as it is as you said not the best looking stuff. It's not something extra special thing that looks super fantastic or something special that is the only one of it's kind that works with a special set I would like to wear so I don't exactly feel saddened by missing out on it.

With the anniversary hats, if they did become available for everyone maybe they could just remove the number for those earned outside of the event. Ofc this might not work for the 5th anniversary hat, but I'm sure the devs could find a way around it. Then everyone can get the hats, but the people who were there at the time still have something special

Just make the old assignments come back round instead of giving the old event items for free, gives every player of any level the chance to get the items and "earn" them/ give them something to do. Kinda like how in OW1 the season cosmetics would just all come back around together but you still had to buy them

Personally i like the idea of rare items as long as they are not locked by money or content creation. I think it would be cool to have a quest for an event/season that is hard and has some special rewards

One of the reasons why I dropped sea of thieves is the predatory FOMO garbage so I second allowing greenbeards to get all the cosmetics in DRG.

Playing Drg after sinking many hours in sea of thieves really made me realize how nice it is to know that all cosmetics aren't time limited. I HATED grinding for a certain cosmetic in the pass knowing that if i didn't grind for it i would never be able to get it again

Wasn’t here year 1 and I’m fine not having the hat. It’s a marker to show you were a “true og” however the steam hats and the blue and white drg hat and paper crown would be very cool late game exclusives and should be able to be earned (I think having the paper crown be the last item would be rather comedic) as a different user mentioned having the anniversary hats show up every year for you as they pop up would be fun, or even having a special yearly assignment for 24 hours where each consecutive has 5 mission gives you a hat from one of the previous years would be lots fun as well.

Personally i think that instead of old items being in the performance pass they should go in the player rank leveling system, like at 100 you get year one 150 year 2 200 year 3 and so on, maybe they'd be better squished closer but i think something a long the lines of that is better then the performance pass that resets every 6 months, also for the problem with the giant loot pool in cargo crates and other things i think that drg could do something like halo infinite (i know sounds odd) but in halo infinite after a season has passed its battle pass is still available so i think after you complete the current season pass in drg you could start working on previous ones.

I like the streamer suit (and i don't have it). I think its perfectly fair to recognize people who have contributed to your game, either by developing it or showing it to an audience. I honestly doubt many people have ever complainrd about not having the streamer suit while having literally thousands of other optiona

I think its ok to have a very very small pool of cosmetics that are either difficult or require very specific conditions to meet. Its kind of fun to know there are some special one-off items out there, even if i will never have it

i think a better way to give the yearly hats to new players is to simply give them a yearly mission which gives them the hats starting at 1. So every year your dwarf gets a hat for his birthday!

I feel like having just a couple (not very pretty) 'OG player' items is honestly fine. I wouldn't be upset if they went away, but it's always a bit nice to have something for the true OGs The steam hats though should deffo be available for everyone.

As someone who joined during this season (3), it's totally fine that not every cosmetic is unlockable. Players aren't entitled to everything after showing up late and missing what released in those events. There are tons of things available. Some are allowed to be special.

A few of items in multiplayer games with cosmetics to show are added with the intent of exclusivity to give players, especially older more veteran players a sense of community or pride for having joined in when they did, or participated in specific events that won't be happening again. It's a part of community management and cultivation, especially for marketing purposes, as if there's going to be a base that sticks around for a long time, you do want to feed them treats, because feeding them exclusive treats and giving them exclusive swag helps set them apart from everyone who comes later, or even came in before. It's the same logic that you might receive unique momentos for participating in a sports club, or social group (that doesn't have to be explicitly exclusive, but by way that not everyone is going to partake and only a few will out of the entire population), you get something that no one else will ever get. These things, shirt usually in real life as a way to remember the time you volunteered for a thing or were in a school or job-based sporting event, or tell other people you did. There's a podcast I listen to, that just last week did an episode on the impact of the internet had on fashion and the universalization of style across regions. To sum it up to get to the relevant bit: prior to the universalization of the internet in daily life, or even in big commercial branded stores, fashion sense and style was determine by what local clothing stores bothered to carry, themselves thought were cool, or could afford to sell because maybe NYC style wasn't exactly affordable to people in Mississippi in the 1980's. The effect of which was there was a sense of regional differences you could see expressed in how people dressed that you inherited when you move in, 'import' if you move into a region, or 'exported' if you traveled through a place and decided such-and-such hat looked cool. But with the internet clothing brands and products could break out much more easily and escape their milieu so people in Boise, Iowa can and do dress like people in NYC much more so now than they did in the past. This sort of collapse of regional identity into a mass commercial one does mean less an ability to express an identity (which is not to say it's all entirely gone, it's just homogenized; you could say there is a 'queer style' so to speak but I do need to return to the point). The inevitable response to this is of course transitioning the way someone expresses their sense of identity is wearing stuff unique to them as part of their lived self; exclusive swag as it is. In the online space the effect is more pronounced especially in video game communities like DRG or even similarly Team Fortress 2 where with (at minimum) enough time you will "basically" own all the cosmetics. Constructing a unique sense of branding on your avatar as such requires exclusive accessories, rewarded through participating in one-off events, existing in the community at a certain mile-stone, or being a certain type of "guy" (the exclusive content creator armor). This helps cultivate an espirt d'corp, as it may to have unique shirts for a unique moment or thing you did in your life, or you are close to in terms of family or friends. For, if not all people than a meaningful minority, this means a lot. You could also argue that something like special content creator cosmetics is the least reward any company could give for basically doing all of their promotion and advertising for free. They aren't really paying you to go on KZfaq or Twitch and make DRG videos. Other people are, and they still get the marketing benefits. Giving you exclusive armor is a no-cast way of rewarding someone for basically doing what would be their own labor they'd have to pay out for. So all that said; I don't think there would really be a proper way of breaking the exclusivity of items because that'd break the special value even just some would have with it, even if it's ugly. Because even though those hats are ugly, they are in the end more *your* hat than anything else anyone else is wearing, even the supporter pack cosmetics you can purchase with real world money. But at the end at least the game doesn't have an in-game community market to buy and sell these cosmetics because then this question would be a nuclear tipped torpedo at literally everything and not just the small coterie of people who've been playing since beta.

I think the biggest divide I see in the playerbase regarding obtaining items and having things to do is that there's two types of late game players: those who are content with what there is, and those who expect more. I'm not saying those who expect more are bad since the Devs are working on the game and so expecting new things should be normal, but personally, I'm just content with the game we already have and so I don't experience disappointment as much when there is less new stuff or when the grind takes a long time. I was fine with getting the overclocks the way the system is now, for example. Not because it's a perfect system but because I already liked playing and so getting overclocks just happened over time.

the paper crown, viking heklmet and steam helmet should definitely be available to all players and be a recourring item that you can get, the content creator suit is... i don't actually know what to think of this one, but i'm i'm fine with the yearly 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 anniversary hats being limited, i have only the 4 and 5 one, i wish i had the other ones but i'm fine with that

I'm fine with "I was here" items like the party hats just not being obtainable, they've done a good job of keeping them wacky and unenviable - you don't feel as though you're missing out on anything. So, this all seems like a solution to a non-problem to me /shrug If folks *really* need to collect 100% of everything, then maybe make error cubes a way to do it. Better than excessive grinding.

Unlock the anniversary hats based on the total years since you first played. They're still hard to attain and veterans will still be the ones getting them first so they'll be special, but eventually everyone can get them if they wait long enough.

I know I don’t speak for all new players, but as someone who started near the start of season 3 I think there should be items for players who’ve been playing since the beginning.

.. Level 525 right now. Started literally 2 weeks before Season 3. I wasn't aware of the other two hats. If the literal only exceptions are Anniversary hats, I don't think I mind. Now I want that dumb non-realistic Viking hat.

I could see them also be rewards for promoting past gold, maybe every platinum+ promotion gives you a token to spend on time-locked cosmetics.

Anniversary hats aren’t coming back because it’s logical. It is a big symbol of how long you played the game, more than a piece of text.

I really would like the chance to get the viking helmet. Saw a really cool looking loadout a while ago, but sadly can't make it. It's not a big deal, but I certainly wouldn't mind somewhat 'exclusive' things being earnable later. I don't think many people would wear the anniversary ones, and wouldn't mind them being given out (not like I have that many of them), but they are the ones I can see the most argument for staying exclusive, funnily enough.

I will never understand the frustration of not having all the cosmetics, they exist either for aesthetics or to flex your OG status, not to be collected, because they have zero economic value and can't be demonstrated to others beyond wearing them on a specific dwarf.

I don't care about exclusives like these. It makes no sense to me why some people think they deserve them when they haven't satisfied the conditions to have them. It's like wanting an official marine uniform given out by the military, but you don't want to join the military. But you still say you should be given one.

I was thinking adding an error cube shop that lets you buy the otherwise exclusive cosmetics. Error cubes are pretty rare and don't currently have a use so it seems perfect to be used as a currency for it, could even be made pretty expensive so you'd need a lot of cubes for it so it's still pretty special to get.

I think the entire topic of cosmetics in videogames delves into economics and supply/demand though rather than money it's perceived value/ enjoyment from cosmetics, because any game that has exclusive loot deals with said issues. Everyone starts with the same gear, but you PLAY to earn better gear through in-game currency/ unlocks, BUT sometimes it's time-sensitive for WHEN to play, OR CHOSEN to give to you by the Devs (streamer gear), OR you BUY them through DLC. Each method was deliberately chosen as the Devs saw fit. Capitalist, communist, socialist, etc. ideas are mixed together since videogames are more flexible than a government or large entity. YES, it would be nice to have access to all the items through playing, BUT it reduces the value (exclusivity since it's not monetary like TF2) of said items and reduces individuality (greybeards vs greenbeards OR your history of participation). At the end of the day, it's digital cosmetics and not food/water, insulin/medical supplies, or any basic needs, so it's not hurting anyone. IF someone REALLY wants something, they could always just persistently ask the Devs in a funny way by like "Eating a picture of X" until I get "X" from DRG devs. Exceptions CAN be made, but you can't make everyone happy, because then no one is happy. Note: I think I know what you're going for. Whales in any "gacha" game suck when it's exclusivity for exclusivity's sake, but if no money is involved, I see no issue. Constructive criticism is fine, but I think a video like this is really going to hit home for greybeards like myself, because if I'm a new player I'm not sweating over the cosmetics I CAN'T get, but the HUGE backlog of OCs, hats, beards, victory poses, color palettes, etc. I HAVEN'T earned yet. This might be dumb question , but your visual dots for enor pearl and other materials amount is very easy. easy to detect and see. is their any setting or mod available to enable this ? i have not used any mods for Deep rock as of yet

My solution has always and will always be, that if it's a framework in the cargo crate, then it should be all the guns for one dwarf, if it's dwarf cosmetic, it should be for all of them. Speed up that collection

I honestly think integrating them into the performance pass i.e. one unobtainable cosmetic every extra 100 levels is a really good way to both keep it obtainable to all players but still make it one of the later item that you can get, and that casual players don't have to worry about.

You could just make the missed assignments (like year 5 hat for me) be available at lvl 500 or something

Im at 1600 hours now and have 100% of unlocks (collectibles and such, events and streamer stuff notwithstanding) i don't really mind not having year 1 or 2 hats or stuff like that, wouldn't make sense really if i wasn't actually there, if i were to get them they would mean very little as they would just count as a tick up on a statistic without carrying any actual weight since i would not be able to associate them with the excitement of playing during an event and finishing the assignment and seeing the decorations of that year etc.

I was thinking if you wanted stuff like the anniversary hatsthen you should be able to obtain them from the anniversary events when you find crates or whatnot. Even have a new anniversary crate to look for if need be

for the aneversery hats, make them employee loyalty appreciation hats, and hand them to players based on time from first login.

In my opinion, they can add those cosmetics available to other players for a really great amount of in game currency, so, the players that were playing at the event time got it by free, it wouldn`t remove the value item as an rare cosmetic and it will let other players get it

My main issue is that even if you could qualify for the streamer stuff. You cant get it on console. Theres stuff on pc console cant get and i have a bigger issue with platform exclusives, compared to exclusives based on timed events.

I play sot too. They begin to add past season stuff in the vendor shops purchasable with dobloons. they add season 1 stuff(frostbite set), and I think that with the next update they will add season 2 stuff(lucky hand set). Sot is full of time limited cosmetics and usually are the best in the game, things like the inevitable reaper sails, the original bonecrusher set, the whailing barnacle set, i would be happy if for some reason rare makes those cosmetics obtainable again. btw i'm so used to play basically just sot and drg that the cut at the beginning of the video didn't feel strange at all

I'm ok with a few exclusive cosmetics tbh. It's a fun thing to show off. Not getting 100% completion is not a big deal imo. I do think we need more progression for endgame players though and I like your ideas.

The devs created a small set of exclusive cosmetic items as a thank you to players who actively helped the success of the game (early adopters and streamers). Taking that away completely defeats the purpose of the items. I don't see any reasonable alternatives for the devs to effectively thank that player base without being even more exclusive. You don't need to collect them all. Plenty of games have items that don't count for 100% completion (and having them frequently bumps your completion percent above 100).

I think this is such a non-issue. The very idea of items being limited is what gives people joy in owning them.

Back when I was playing SoT a couple years ago there was an event where I consciously did daily deeds to grind favor for some cannon cosmetic and then a month later in the next update they added them to the regular store for purchase with just gold. Kinda ticked me off. IMO if you’re going to make something require a grind, don’t suddenly make it super easy to obtain later on. That said there are SoT items that people have and you automatically know they played long and hard to get them. Just seeing them it’s easy to tell. This would be really cool in DRG where you see a sick beard and know immediately this person knows what’s up. Could go along with the weapon mastery idea you mentioned recently.

Maybe they could add them with a tiny chance to be found in lost equipment.

Question…. Where’s the DRG White Cap Hat? I got it during Alpha or something when the game was free, I got it before the 1 Year Hat. Gave feedback, improvements, bug reports and even ideas such as the Bar. Which didn’t exist at the time, yes, there was no beer during those days.

Bolted Marauder and Steamie Helmet I can see being a rotating hat that can be unlocked by playing during a day when the game goes on sale on Steam, so new people getting involved in a very similar event get a chance. Anniversary hats can likewise have a "time warp" super-assignment that requires progressively harder Hazards for the reward of earlier and earlier year hats, sort of like a slow-roll Deep Dive; year 5+ is haz 1, year 4 is haz 2, etc. Stream suit/helmet I feel should be a DLC pack that goes towards supporting creators if you don't want to go into "earning" it yourself. You can still get it for free with the streamer name color the normal way.

Exclusivity does create "want" to be there when those events

you always can just search for a 100% save file, then edit the profile level and resource to a reasonable amount, (since most of the time theese files contains an absurd amount of lvl and resources, like 9999999 for everything), and you basically redy to go.

I would say that there should be an addition to the shop that would exclusively be for stuff you were not around for, but date marked mark it somehow so you know when you started playing vs when you bought the item. Maybe introduce error cubes somehow?

I got all of the overclocks recently , took me a bit over 400 hours. Seems a little high to me, but I guess it is obtainable.

Honestly this issue gets even worse when festive events come up like halloween and christmas. EVERY game in your library is vying for your attention and you can only play so much of just one game. Whereas deep rock's events are small and can be replayed the next year.

Here's a way I think it could work. Give error cubes an additional function of being able to be traded in for limited items like the anniversary hats. The error cubes are rare enough but integrated into gameplay enough that you will get the limited hats, eventually. Maybe the farther back the hat goes, the more error cubes it costs. I feel like this is a fair method despite being left up to chance, but then again so are a lot of other things in the game so i think it's fine. (Also i think more cosmetics and stuff should be tied to error cubes because that might be cool(

I started playing this game last September, and I am currently doing the cosmetic core hunt, I drained the item shop of its items, finished getting the Overclocks and I'm running through caves to get every cosmetic overclock. I was honest to God hoping to get the paper crown, and I found out, just now, that it is unobtainable. I'm disappointed, like I rationalized the anniversary hats as a yearly thing, but man, this does kind of suck

There is a way to get these cosmetics (not the streamer items) by editing your save file. So its not legit by any means but it is possible.

I don’t like yearly anniversary items if it means you can’t get them again after that anniversary passes.

Honestly I DO think some cosmetics should be exclusive. I don't think they should be locked behind a paywall, but if there are some free cosmetics that can only be earned via playing the game during a certain period, I think they should exist and continue being exclusive, because it allows for more visual customization and more targets to grind for players who happen to be playing during said events. Like, making anniversary hats available to everyone at any point in the game would just be silly because it defeats the purpose of those hats existing. You have those hats so that you can encorporate then into your DWARF DRIP (💀) and show everyone how COOL (💀) you are. In all seriousness tho, exclusive timed items are cool and I'm saying it as a person who have missed out on a huge bunch of those. I like seeing dwarfs in some semi-unique hats that no one can get anymore, it makes the universe of DRG feel more alive, like those players are actual dwarfs who are actual veterans of the craft, who have been there since the begining. In a sence those time gated hats from old events are kinda like medals you can show off. They don't do anything but they make you feel better and stroke your ego quite bluntly. Like seriously a very low ammount of people will rock a 5 year anniversary hat unironically because it looks so good and better than any other hat. No, they would wear it because it holds some emotional significance to them even if it looks silly.

I don't really see anything wrong with having exclusive cosmetics that only appear during certain events or rare instances. Just as long they aren't like tradeable or locked behind payment. I don't think this is as serious as some might make it out to be.

i do mostly agree with this for limited time cosmetics and stuff, but more skill based hard to get cosmetics that the one percent have would be cool. not as in "I payed or was here at a certain time so I'm better" more like doing a challenge or getting a super hard achievement and getting rewarded with a special cosmetic, so its still open to everybody but will remain a bragging right for those who got it without putting it behind some sort of arbitrary wall, and i think that sort of exclusivity is warranted since it isn't required for every one and it inspires those who want that super cool or weird cosmetic to go out of their comfort zone to achieve something in game. but that's just my 2 cents on the matter.

I like the "cosmetics via performance pass" idea. Another idea might be to add a support pack which grants the buyer a random assortment of, say, 10 cosmetics they don't already have (including currently unavailable ones). That would be a good option for people like me who generally don't max out their PP tiers but are happy to spend some more money on a game that brings a lot of enjoyment.
