Does dynamic range matters to you ?
What is the most important feature in a camera ?
PS this video is only talking about the photo aspect of the camera. When it comes to video it's a whole different story

I've a few angry person here saying that I hate Canon and so on. But the fact is I want to switch back to Canon because I need Canon glasses for my Sony. So having a second Canon body would be great and I got exited about the 6d mark II but it lacks 4K the dual card slot and it has a horrible DR at those lower ISO.... So yeah I'm very disappointed with canon. I'm not sure what the successor of the D750 will be but it WILL have all the above that I look for in a camera (for my work)

hahaha cheers ! Yeah it does save time not have to take 3 photos to take a correct exposure. I really enjoyed that when I switched back to Nikon. But the fact is also that a lot of people are happy with "just" the Canon sensors cause it fits their photo style. I would rather spend a bit more time getting the colors right on my Nikon than not being able to pull out the shadows with little noise. ;)

People can be angry as much as they want but facts are clear : I have personally owned and used several canon cameras ( 5D mark II , 5D mark III, 7D , and 70D) and I was always frustrated with the Dynamic range whereas on Nikon it was not a hustle at all . guys I understand we can be fanboys but we must be honest : Although I love Canon's color science (that can be achieved in post for other brands) , Nikon has always been ahead when it comes to dynamic range and that's why I switched and never looked back. Tres bonne Duncan !

Hey Duncan, i know it's an old video and all but, i didn't really believe what i was seeing, so i decided to try it for my self, got a lot of RAW files from DpReview, from sony, nikon and canon, i shoot canon myself and i'm very well aware of what you're talking about, and it's been driving me crazy for years. Now i took those raw files into lightroom, and boy oh boy... the Nikon D810 files ... oh my god, you can do anything to them they'll take it, there is so much flexibility in the file that it's quite unbelievable for someone like me. Funny thing is that i took files from the EOS R, you'd think they would have got A LOT better with their files and sensors and how they handle the shadows, nope, same story here! The thing is, with canon, when you nail your exposure, the files are fine, there is not much flexibility but they look great, but if you fuck up the exposure in camera, no way to recover anything, in a way that helped me a lot for years to learn how to expose, but now that i saw how flexible other cameras are with their files, and how easy it is to work with, i can only see the possibilities now, and how i could save some pictures in the future, i mean sometimes you fuck up a shot and the moment is gone, for ever, it's very frustrating. Thank you for opening my eyes on this, and i would also add, looking at videos of reviews of cameras and stuff is fine, but downloading the raw files and trying them in lightroom is ten times faster to open your eyes, then you can take the time to think about what a camera has to offer in terms of features, but that's another story!

It’s not the simple man. Nikon has better camera senors, Canon have better lenses. I’d argue good glass is more important than the slight colour and DR bump that Nikon’s have. This video spends all of its time measuring paper specs and the camera’s at the extreme ends of what they’re capable of. When would you accept a shot that’s underexposed by 4-5 stops? It’s exactly the same when they compare high ISO capabilities. I would never accept an image at 12,000 iso as quality work. I would never use the “rescued” shots he showed in this video. You’d never get work again if you did... In real world applications Canon camera’s have more than enough DR. If you want a HDR shot them you’ll bracket the shot either way....

I'm perfectly happy with the 12ev dynamic range of my 5dii. Why? Visualization, metering, and that handy bit of photographic knowledge: the Zone System. Don't want to blow out that wedding dress? Meter off the bright parts of the skirt, set for Zone IX (+3ev on the camera's meter, or +2 2/3 if I'm feeling cautious), and Bob's your uncle. There's absolutely no reason to underexpose everything "just in case". Be in control!

DR is superb! Speed is superb! Focus is superb! Quality is superb! Sharpness is superb! Iso range is Superb! Everything about this (crop) camera is awesome and I like it! DR is no issue and I hail Nikon for that! I've also used canon bodies like 5DMK3 and 80D and liked the 80D more but it is nowhere near the D500. Great video! Keep it up! I appreciate this information! It’s validated what I’ve experienced even with a low budget Nikon and the most basic of editing programs. I’ve been able to edit and get decent or awesome photos with Nikon. I’m moving towards an intermediate level and I’m definitely going with Nikon. Good to know about the one particular Nikon with poor range. I tried out a Sony A6000 and honestly I was happier with my photos from a point and shoot Nikon. The Sony had some benefit but I returned because I expected more, though I did have a kit lens and was used to having zoom, but it was almost impossible even on auto mode to get the Sony to focus. I realize I’m still learning but just have an affinity for Nikon per my experience of making the best with what I have. Thanks!

For video the GH4 and GH5 are indeed awesome....they deliver everything Canon is not delivering in their DSLR's at a similar pricepoint. You can buy almost 2 GH5's now for 1 5D Mark IV.....that have IBIS, clean HDMI out and 60fps in 4K while Canon 5D Mark IV doesn't offer all of that (and also by using an ancient Motion JPEG coded that produces huge files). The real killer will be the Panasonic GH5 for filmmakers (amazing low light filmmaking with a camera that does not overheat, has a simple menu compared to Sony and amazing slomo....pro filmmakers will work around the fact it has not 5 axis IBIS since they work with tripods, monopods and gimbal stabilizers mostly anyway).

The problem of this test was methodology. Why not to test overexposed images as well? In this test Canons could give a better results. As a wedding photographer shooting on f1.2 I'm not scared of overexposing the wedding dress, because I can always bring back the details. I know that better dynamic range in Nikon is raging far into shadows, which is useful, because you can save some shutter speed, but you mentioned several times that you are afraid to overflow the highlights. For me a bright day on f1.2 means that I have to use ND filter or use canon, as I can't go faster than 1/4000s. What about colours? Canon colour science is far better than what Sony or Nikon would give you out of the box. There is much more to consider in terms of sensor quality than DR and we don't buy sensors but entire ecosystem. Pentax has a great ergonomic and with Tamron's rebranded lenses is pretty useful, but if you want OCF, then the choice is limited. You won't have a problem to find even a very exotic accessories for Canon. I'm not a funboy - they suck when it comes to listen to their users and they disappoints us quite often, but at least I don't have oily sensor in my 6D which I bought after preselection were D600 was a second on my shortlist. I won't buy 6D MK2 even thou I like the screen. I don't care about filming in 4k, so 5D MK4 would be my choice, but I wish they would give us the same screen here as the one in 6D MK2.

+Duncan Dimanche So basically you posted a video telling people not to take Canon over Nikon or Sony because the DR in Canon is supposed to be worse. And then, in a reaction, you admit that you did an incomplete test (only testing DR in shadows) and that Nikon is not doing well in highlight-recovery (DR) - while Canon is indeed superior to Nikon in that area. Maybe you jumped to conclusions a little too early? Personally I find the difference in DR too marginal. Do more tests, switch to higher ISO's and then tell us what you think. I'm no 'fanboy' but yes I recently switched from Sony to Canon. There's more than DR. :-)

Ashley Nadin yeah that’s one solution and it’s a great one. I personally don’t use speedlights that much. You need a stand and a diffuser and sand bags if you shoot outdoors so that makes travel setups a lot more heavy and cumbersome. You can also mount it on the camera but i’m not a fan of frontal lighting setup. So yeah if it is a paid job then you can and should bring the best set up possible with all the light kits but for a travel photographer i would think that having an incredible dynamic range is the “best” solution. Honestly what i love about Canon cameras is the ergonomics and the flippy screen. But aside from this Canons are plagued by artificial limitations, terrible dynamic range and locked features even for their top priced models. Anyone who'll try to convince you that Canons have good "image quality" is probably a youtuber who primarily shoots video. Nikons have incredible dynamic range (which you'll need as soon as the shooting stops btw), invariable ISO, beautiful color science and a photography-first demeanor. Canon puts profit as item 1, 2 and 3 on their priority list. Every camera is basically an ad for a higher end model that costs extra. They also make projectors, printers, binoculars, and calculators so yeah.

yeah you are very correct ! I have to say that since the 5dm4 their sensors for their high end models (other than the 6dm2) has made huge leaps in terms of dynamic range and overall image quality. As far as marketing Canon is just amazing at it cause no matter how much worse their sensor is they still manage to convince every nonpro (and lots of pros too) that their cameras will make better images... Marjolein Caljouw hi there ! Haha arfh ! I didn’t manage to convince you otherwise hun ?! You are correct for the bokeh. It is a LOT easier to get great blurry background with a full frame camera like the 6d than with a crop sensor camera. Ps I just released this video last week about this topic kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8CRh6iarK2of40.html You bought a great all around camera but I hope that you are not planning on shooting too much landscape ;) But yes if you put two equivalents lenses on a crop sensor and on a full frame and take the same photo at the same distance , same focal length and same aperture then the background of the full frame camera will be more blurry and nicer. So if that is what you are looking for then you made the right choice. Get yourself the 85mm f/1.8 canon (250$ used) and you will make some amazing portraits with creamy background I promise !

digital post production does only make sense with enough dynamic range - especially with some gamma correction. with new mirrorless cameras where you can have a nice histogram in the viewfinder to optimize before making the shot it's a different story. but still, the real content can contain a lot of dynamic range that you somehow want to capture.

The D5600 is a great camera to start with I think. For portrait I would get the 50mm f/1.8 (or the f/1.4 if you have enough money) And for travel the good old 18-135 equivalent is fantastic for landscape). If you can shoot with a manual focus lens then I would get a cheap 85mm cause those are great for portrait and you can find cheap ones.

Hi Duncan, I was looking at both of these cameras, and this video was very helpful. A friend who is a terrific photographer has Canon and I was going to get the 1DX Miii. But now I'm getting the D850. I have a question about your underexposing with the sun behind or the bright windows - How do you expose for those? The last time I took a photo with the sun in the background I exposed for my model and of course the sky was bright and the sun was lost. Thanks.
@DuncanDimanche-sreview
@DuncanDimanche-sreview 5 жыл бұрын
brianjcavanaugh hi there and thanks for your kind comment ! (They are so few these days haha) The d850 is a fantastic camera ! Especially if you are only shooting stills. For shooting backlit people it will be hard for ANY camera. The best is to use a reflector so you subject is not in total darkness. But if you don’t have one then it will be a bit tricky. I haven’t used the d850 myself so you might want to do some testing yourself. Because if you expose for the highlights and try to preserve them then your subject will be very dark. But the d850 can handle a crazy amount of shadow recovery so you might be able to recover all the details (you need to shoot at low ISO though to get all the details back) But also remember that it’s not an unusable image if it has some overexposed part. As long as it doesn’t become a distraction. So before doing a paid shoot practice what you can and can’t do with the D850. But you should ALSO get a good size reflector. It is a must !

@@DuncanDimanche-sreview Thanks a lot. And you're very welcome, you made a great video with lots of details and research. For the exposure question, I was just looking for a general tip. Let's say you don't have a reflector, like in your pics (girl in field & church wedding). Do you read for whatever light is falling on the subject, or do you read for your subject then stop down a few stops. Whatever rule of thumb you use. I realize you're underexposing your subjects, but how do you personally determine the correct (under)exposure? Thanks.
@DuncanDimanche-sreview
@DuncanDimanche-sreview 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there again. Sorry for the delay I just saw your answer :) I expose for the highlights usually. I want to preserve the highlights and then bring back the shadows as you saw on those shots from Scotland. If the subject is wayyy too much in the shadow then I expose for the subject more and sacrifice some highlights cause it is more important to get the exposure properly on your subject than having the perfectly exposed image. Cause you do loose some detail when recovering the shadows. I'm alway by 0.7 just as a safety mesure when I shoot with Aperture priority cause I know that my camera can take an underexposed photo easily. But it all comes down to your camera. I shoot sometimes with a Canon 5dm3 and when I do I don't underexpose my shots cause it cannot take such a heavy shadow lifting Have I answered your question ?

RiverVmanna hi there. When it comes to dynamic range lenses don’t matter one bit. As for getting the perfect image without any distortion I would go with a prime lens like a 85mm (the canon one cost 200-300 used) if you shooot full frame. Or with a 50mm if you shoot with a crop sensor. But this lens is a bit tight. So if you fi d yourself in small rooms too often then you should get away with a zoom lens but you will need to apply lens distortion correction in lightroom. To sum it up : Shoot in Raw Prime lens (50-85) Have a white target for the white balance Tripod Apply lens correction in editing software Shoot at f5.6-8 for the sharpest image Have a 2 second timer

Nikon also has much better color science reproducing colors that look more like what you see with your eyes - which also makes it easy to reproduce skin tones correctly. I found Canon to be off so as Sony camera's that I've tried - Canon with reddish tin, Sony with greenish/yellowish tint. Nikon just nails it! Thank you very much for your very informative video!

What if canon and nikon had the same sensors, if we exclude dynamic range, and judge the cameras/brands, i think Nikon would be in trouble. I shoot canon for few reasons, first when i decided to buy a dslr, i started looking for glass, and decided that canon provides better value when it comes to glass. the 50mm 1.8 stm is a great lens that is not radically different in image quality from the Nikon counterpart one, the 70-200 f4 the nikon version is worse and twice the price, also the cool pancake lens, cheep and great as i do try to carry my camera as much as i can. Also that ''made in japan'' thing tickles my ears the right way, even though Nikon are still made very well, in some cases better. So i decided to pick the brand with the slight lack of sensor performance, so i can have the kit i want for the money i could put into camera gear over time. ps: Still though... pls canon... 35mm 1.8? without IS? at a nice price? we would love that.
@DuncanDimanche-sreview
@DuncanDimanche-sreview 6 жыл бұрын
xMotivationFix i get what you are saying. But I wouldn’t call it “slight” sensor advantage. It is a Huge advantage. When it comes to lenses i feel like they are both very equal. I own a lot of Nikon primes 35mm f1.8 , 50mm , 85mm and they are all very affordable especially used. But then again it’s a matter of taste and preferences. Personally i think that the canon 50mm is awful i used it a few times and the nikon version is feels better. Canon needs to make a 35mm 1.8 for their crop sensors. And a new 50mm 1.4 too ;) I’m happy that they finally made a 85 f1.4 ;) So yeah they all compete with each other and are constantly upgrading their lenses so it’s hard to say who has more lens options ;) It’s a great time to be a photographer!!! There are tons of great options to choose from !

The Canon sensors are not the problem but how the luminosity/color science works on Canon cameras. When you are comparing two different systems you can't be possibly expecting that you are comparing the same exact luminosity/color science behind the raw files, since they are two different systems that work differently. Put simply, at the time of the exposure Canon gives you a histogram based on a color profile that has more contrast than Nikon, and so you loose a part of the dynamic range. But if you understand this aspect, that Canon is processing the image differently than Nikon does, you can then adjust the Canon camera to get more DR at the time of the exposure simply by dialing down the in-camera contrast. Or simply load a different color profile like Technicolor Cinestyle and make your exposure based on it, not on standard Canon picture profiles. Then you'll see that in fact Canon is actually doing much better than you originally thought when it comes to DR. It is a rookie mistake to shoot Canon cameras with in-camera contrast activated, it should always be set to it's minimum value (0 or -4, depending on the model).
@DuncanDimanche-sreview
@DuncanDimanche-sreview 6 жыл бұрын
Critical Point hi there. I don’t think that dialing down the contrast in the camera menu will make a difference if you shoot RAW (which everyone should). But I could be wrong on that. And canon’s 5dmiv has made a HUGE jump in DR but unfortunately the other cameras like the new 6Dmii did not inherit this new and better sensor....
@criticalpoint7672
@criticalpoint7672 6 жыл бұрын
It does, do some tests and you will convince yourself. Because it affects the way you setup your exposure. You setup your exposure based on what the camera's histogram shows you, but the camera's histogram is based on a picture profile that contains more contrast than Nikon's picture profiles. So for example instead of you setting your shutter speed to 1/250, you will set it to 1/320 because the histogram tells you that at 1/250 your are blowing out the sky, but putting it at 1/320 will make you get less details in the shadows, even if you are shooting raw. But the histogram reports that at 1/250 you are blowing out the sky because it uses a picture profile with more contrast, not because the physical sensor is incapable of resolving that amount of DR at 1/250. So understanding this aspect on Canon cameras is crucial in getting as much DR of of them as possible. Canon cameras have more contrast build into their picture profiles, that is why you should never, ever shoot with their in-camera contrast set above the minimum value, because then you are trading dynamic range for contrast.

My very first camera was a Sony A7RII... I didn't know nothing about that (Canon poor HDR)... In few months my finals product was same or better than a few of "experimented photographers" (at least IQ and sharpness). One year and a half after, my composition is better. A concert photographer have to know how to recover an image from the darkness. My Sony A7RII has an amazing HDR! At this days, I was thinking that Canon also! 5D Mark IV has virtually identical DR compared with your Sony. To me the most important factor for a good or bad photo is composition and very rarely IQ. Which is what is making photography so difficut and why people who are not very good at photography from a composition perspective tend to buy better and better camera's. But they are not getting much better themselves in many cases. They need to master than new product time and time again and never attain optimum results with any cam. Good composition and good post processing combined with nowing your gear very well makes for excellent pics. Not cmaera's with excellent specs. They help a little for sure. But in my view only in the hands of that person that mastered them and is a master in all the other aspects as well.

Hector Rivera I will have to agree with just one and that his color science. As for the rest... Lenses: nope they are on part (the nikon 70-200 IS the best lens of its class) the Canon 85 f1.4 is also fantastic. So each have their own strength. AF : same here (i find the non pro to be better with the nikon bodies though) Video: if you need af-c then sure go for Canon but if you need good video quality and 4k without a horrible codec (like on the 5d4 then you need to go for the Nikons) But I’m sure that you will disagree with each and every point that I made ;) but that is life haha Also there is something about the Canon sensors that Where I find them not sharp. The lack of details is obvious. If you look at the side by side on dpreview in raw there is so much more details on the nikons than the canons with the same MPX count...

@@DuncanDimanche-sreview In general, canon sensors have always been distinguished by the fact that the light in the photo pulled better than the shadows . Therefore, it was always recommended to shoot scenes that were more complex in terms of DR with some overexposure. This significantly reduces problems with DR. Canon has the knowledge but they are just protecting their C200-C500 line of cinema camera's pretty well. Only Panasonic with their GH4 and GH5 manage to cramp prime features in a MFT camera for a really sharp price (the GH4 is 3 years old now and does C4K and clean HDMI out, the GH5 can do 60fps in 4K.....Canon is not even close in the cinema world when it comes to making those things available in a 1k camera because they protect their cinema line very strict). Canon DSLR is mainly still for stills. And Canon markets it as such even when they know they lose marketshare to the competition (i.e. Panasonic and Sony with the A7S line). And it's a weird decision because if your clients ask for a 4K DSLR and jump ships massively (at least in the filmmaker industry) and you only make the real good stuff too expensive in the C -line cinema camera's (5D Mark IV uses an old motion jpeg codec so that camera didn't got picked up by filmmakers on a large scale) you lose marketshare. Canon is still nice for photography with their DSLR's but not on top of the world anymore with more players in the field that currently offer more and better quality for equal or less money.

Changed from a very loved 5DM2 because of Dynamic Range basically... (after 15 years using Canon) - Very happy with my D800e today (more of a professional tool in every way when compared to the Mark 2... many well thought controls and features) - even though it is an "old" camera About the D5: it is a very extreme compromise - very bad low ISOs for it is tuned for High ISOs... Sony Sensors are only one component - Nikon is king of SNR algorithms from the beginning of the digital age... After 15 years with Canon (film cameras and then the 5DM2), the last 2 years have been a blast using the D800e and legacy Nikon glass...

Duncan, this very well put together video shows why many top professionals prefer Nikon cameras. Canon just cannot get their dynamic range right after all of these years. Canon sells because of their video capability and clever marketing. Now with regards to some of the comments here, when you see Canon advertising agents (which we suspect but no proof) act like Nikon users and attack Nikon products, you know they are paid liars or simply being dishonest. Whatever the case both Canon and Nikon are top companies, the competition is good and I wish both of them well.

Duncan, sorry for not being clear. I have corrected my comment to talk more directly to another person. I like your review and thought that you did a good job bringing out an important issue about the 6D Mark II camera. I think that both Canon and Nikon are top companies but I am surprised that Canon just released a $2,000 camera with so many things missing. No 4K video, one card slot, and poor dynamic range. Canon has the technology but apparently, do not want the professionals to buy this camera - so that they can move them to a more expensive model. Wow! Nikon D7500 cost only $1,250 so one card slot is understandable as it will steal sales from the D500 because it incorporates so much of that camera's advanced features. But one card slot on the Canon 6D Mark II, a $2,000 camera? The Nikon D760 (the D750 successor) that is soon to be released will steal a lot of potential Canon customers who were thinking about buying this Canon camera. Unless of course if Nikon drops the ball with is possible but highly unlikely. Anyway, good job with your review. Thanks.

Nice video. Should be noted that the so called 2 stop dynamic range is more like one stop in reality practice the base exposure (correct one) will be in the middle. Hence one stop highlight and 1 stop shadow. Also, when you compare dynamic range at higher iso, like around 1600, Canon and Nikon is essentially the same and many say Canon has an edge. Also in practice, a good landscape photographer will know to bracket the exposure out of creative necessity (come on, the camera is already on a tripod) anyway. A good portrait photographer will know to carry an external light source (no, not direct on camera flash) to compress the range as well as add more appealing light to the subject.

I learned several things about photography a long, long, time ago. First, any good photographer can take good photographs with any of the better brands. Second, we all have personal preferences: Some like the look and color of Canon, and some the look and color of Nikon. In blind tests, I usually pick the Nikon images by a wide margin, but that's me. Third, when walking around with my brand new D2x years ago, my brand new D3 years ago, my brand new D4, and now my used D810 [and probably the D850 when it arrives], I always find incredible photographs taken with other brands, and cameras of far inferior quality to mine - go figure. Finally, I also learned that using foul language in defense of one's position, insulting people who disagree with your choice of camera, or defending your choice with rude, uncivil language, demonstrates the author or speaker has a definite opinion [often on faith, not fact], and isn't worth the time, space, or bandwidth to read or listen. P.S.: Dynamic range matters to me, but I won't fight to the death over my personal preferences.

Please please stop spreading so much misinformed bullshit. Yes OLD canon sensors were bad in DR. but that changed since almost 2 years ago already. Also these "patterns" as you call it is banding noise on the old sensors. Caused by the old off sensor A/D converter tech. The new canon sensors uses "on sensor ADC tech" same as the sony sensors do. So they are on the same standard in sensor technology as sony. There is almost no difference in the DR between the Sony A7Rii and the Canon 5DmIV.

Nikon is better for still photography and canon is the best compromise for both photo and video. Canon has faster processor. So it's just the nature of work you want to take from the camera which drives the purchase decision. Personally I needed a camera for still photography, so purchased Nikon based on DXO benchmarks. Overall image quality is way higher than that of canon due to better quality sensor. But I have to accept that canon lenses are much better than Nikon in DXO benchmarks in many parameters. So you decide yourself Canon or Nikon? If you choose one over the other, you get something but also lose something.

Aryan canon used to be years ahead of nikon when it comes to videography. But now I can promise you that the game has changed and now Nikon is way better than Canon’s terrible codec in video mode. Canon’s Mpeg codec makes MASSIVE files that are not sharp at all. Check out the 4k for the 5Dmiv ;) As far as lenses it’s not all about sharpness. And DXO is ALL about sharpness. There are lenses in the Nikon lineup that are better than Canon and vice versa. But the brand that gets the sharpness crown is the Sigma Art series ;) Nikon is also bringing RAW capability to their video which Canon won’t and might never do due to their pro cinema lineup.

Yes indeed, but tweaking images is hardly practical when you have a few hundred images to tweak. Among all my cameras of the past, I most preferred my Fuji S3. That camera had fabulously pleasing color, especially skin tones. And it had an option of simultaneously getting the best detail in images such as a black tuxedo and a white wedding dress, within the same ingage, of course. Specifically meaning that it had a very wide dynamic range much like color negative film, whereas the dynamic range of many current digital cameras seems to be closer to that of color transparency film. In addition, the Fuji had great quality Jpegs. All I can say is, despite the fact that current cameras are wonderful in many ways, they sometimes leave quite a lot to be desired.

I need to investigate Lightroom - - I remember having an independent plug-in for Photoshop called "color washer" which could very satisfactorily correct color issues with just one click. Great for jpegs when you have a few hundred corrections to make within a short period of time. I was never much of an expert with Photoshop or other such programs. So I "cheated" every chance I could get. Ha ha!

Depends on which Canon camera body. Suffice it to say that L series lenses are frightfully expensive, even when compared to the majority of the best Nikkor lenses. I suppose the best Canon & Nikon camera bodies are more or less comparably priced, possibly depending on which features you want besides a whole lot of megapixels.

They recently got better. The 80D was a great upgrade, still some catching up to do, but it is getting closer and there are a few more refreshes coming with better sensors. IIRC the 6D got its refresh this summer too, the 200D (something something rebel in the us) has got a good amount better, more will follow. Mind you, those new canon sensors are still catching up to Nikon, but they are getting close and you get the better ergonomics and the dual-pixel AF as consolation. Overall a tempting deal even with a the slightly better sensors on Nikon. And lenses are quite reasonable priced with canon on top. Good times to buy cameras, everything is good these days.

Unfortunately many people seem to think that DR is only useful for playing with the shadow and highlight sliders in lightroom, but actually a camera with larger DR gives a more natural, flat image with nicely exposed skies and dark, but not black shadows. Also cameras with better DR tend to have better ISO performance, a must for night photography and documentary. I always loved the Canon lenses and the feel of the canon bodies but the image quality of my sony and nikon cameras were just waaay better.

no, no, no... please don´t... you won´t get more followers by spreading click baits, people were raging years upon. you are comparing one big anything to some other irrelevant something. The niche where it really makes a difference is too small. do you even understand the concept of dynamic range? how often do you shoot iso100? iso64? sadly that are the areas where the nikon dynamic range shines - look at iso200 and above and you see whole different picture - nikons dynamic range sinks whereas canon rises above it by at least 1/2 a stop - that is what dxo mark is say (D810 vs 5D4). and every time you get of your lovest iso setting you´re sacrificing your precious dynamic range and actually throws everything away you were advertising here. every camera is designed for specific needs - why Nikon D5 has such a crappy base iso dynamic range? because it´s designed for sport, and nobody cares about it´s DR at base ISO - at higher iso, where it is actually used(moving subjects, fast shutter speed, very high iso) - it shines. d810 is great at base iso DR because its really good landscape camera. but if you really care about DR you will shoot HDR anyway, with extra 12-14 DRstops, not 1/2-1. astro? yeah, could be advantageous. studio? not really, but a matter of taste. here you go a real life comparison - a friend of mine has d800 with it´s astonishing 14.4 Stops of dynamic range. i am a completely different kind of photographer who switched to m43 system. we often meet at events and exchange results - she is always confused, why my tiny cropped m43 sensor can beat her beasty ff dslr in any aspect - colour, dynamic range, iso. the answer is easy - instead of shooting iso 3200, i can comfortably shoot iso 400 (i can get f0.95 glass for affordable price, and shoot at lower shutterspeed, looking for specific moments, ibis will freeze anything static anyway) please don´t mislead uneducated people. 95% of wrong photographic knowledge is spread into the masses by people like you. please care to fix your mistaces in the video - all you are talking is on BASE ISO level.

The Men Who Draw Sheeps hi there thank you for taking your time and I'm sorry that you found this video misleading. It wasn't my intention nor do I want to make a click bait video. I really ain't like that. And wether you believe it or not that's a whole different story. First of all I'm very impressed that your m4/3 camera can beat your friend's D800 in EVERY aspect. You must be quite an amazing photographer or she.... well she might not be so much (trying to stay polite here) As a photographer with fast primes who travels a lot i found myself shooting at base ISO a LOT and tons of other photographers shoot during daytime so won't need to shoot beyong iso 400 and so on. But I will get my hands on a D810 and a 5dmarkiv to do some higher ISO side by side to be fair. And even if dxo says that after iso 400 canon takes the lead I highly doubt that it is better in the shadow area than the Nikon. I will probably be better in the highlights. But anyway i should have been more clear about the base ISO DR in this video. And I will next time. Have a good one
@vitaliikharkovchuk6384
@vitaliikharkovchuk6384 7 жыл бұрын
hah, if you doubt the dxo mark, then you probably shouldn´t take it as a reference for your comparison.) otherwise, sir, you are a hypocrite.) it´s has nothing to do with being an amazing photographer(which I, obviously am%)), it´s more about doing your homework. If you read dxo mark closely you´ll see that even m43 sensor can produce same image quality as ff just on a different iso setting - lets say 2 stops lower(actually less, and depending on technology). put f0.95 primes into account and mft camera can produce any picture a FF camera on ISO400 + f1.8 primes can (dof, vof, noise, color, dr, etc.). That's a limitation i can easily live with, considering all the pro´s i´m gaining. but we aren´t talking about my preferences - rather about reason some camera´s were designed that way - d810 is great landscape and studio camera, thats why almost 15 stops DR at base iso makes sense. many canon users are available light photographers, so it was designed as uniwersal workhorse, to perform slightly better at higher iso´s. thats the reason why systems like fuji or m43 have electronic shutter up to 1/32000s - not because they are just better, but to make shallow dof photography possible with extremely fast primes.

The Men Who Draw Sheeps a f/0.95 on a m4/3 is the equivalent of an f/2 on a full frame.... how does that compete in terms of shallow depth of field with a f/1.2 or even f/1.4 ? I've used the leica 42,5mm f1.2 on a gh5 and loved it but you can't achieve the same results as a full frame. As for the dxo results. All I'm saying is that they don't tell you the DR range as in if it's in the highlights or in the shadows (like dpreview used to do) So I want to test if the canon have better shadow DR in the higher ISO than Nikon.

Duncan Dimanche, The Men Who Draw Sheeps a f/0.95 on a m4/3 is the equivalent of an f/2 on a full frame.... how does that compete in terms of shallow depth of field with a f/1.2 or even f/1.4 ? yep, read carefully - thats exactly what i told. with f0.95 lens + mft sensor at base iso, i get exactly same results as ff sensor at iso400+f2 lens. i can imagine some exotic setup like speedbooster x.064 + old, cheap f1.2 prime, to match f1.4 range - i didn´t tell it was perfect, i mentioned, that it was more than enough for me, to keep up with event photographers using ff+ like 85mm f2, or even f1.4 - even with that setup they need pump up iso up too 1600-3200 range to maintain usable shutterspeed. whereas i shoot comfortly at iso400-800, getting same or even cleaner results. sure, 42.5mm f1.2, won´t impress you comparing to f1.4 primes. get your ff lens to f2.4 and iso 2 stops up, and you´ll see almost no difference. no doubt at good excellent or controlled light conditions, and extremes like f1.2 primes or even professional f2.8 zooms, FF sensors shines, as they should. at a dim light, or slower lenses differences become less obvious.

I have to choose between canon 600D and Nikon 3200, both are used, I chose 600D but not bought yet. Although on paper Nikon 3200 looks superior, when I checked actual sample photos of both cameras, canon seemed to have warmer colors and overall better, more pleasing look. Nikon 3200 colors are somewhat cold and look like those of point and shoot cameras. If I had an option to choose between Canon 600D and Nikon 5200 I would choose latter. It's just this model 3200 that I don't like, it's photos don't look that good to me. It's strange, cause 3200 and 5200 models are not that different in price, but have huge difference in color quality, but maybe I don't understand something, I am a beginner after all.
@DuncanDimanche-sreview
@DuncanDimanche-sreview 6 жыл бұрын
George From Jungle ummmm well the colors really depend on a lot of things. The color settings used , the white balance and the lights that you shoot in. Do you know what you want to shoot ? Landscape ? Portraits? Do you know what lenses do you want ? Do you plan on filming ? Or just photos ? I would go for the d5200 rather than the 3200. The body is a lot better with more bottons. And like I showed in this video if Dynamic range matters to you you should go with the Nikons... ;) But I would recommend going to a store and testing them out. To feel which one feels right for you

No, As I said I am a beginner and I don't know much about lenses. but mostly I will be shooting landscapes and I would also go for 5200 but in location where I am from I can get only canon 600d or nikon 3200 for the same price. So I really need to know which one is better from these two. I also may need to make some videos , but mostly I will be shooting trees, grounds, forests...I need the camera which will have good detail and warm colors.
