The art of roving or stump shooting - it is the #1 most effective way to get a measurement of where your HUNTING shots are at.
This will help a bowhunter who really wants to increase their ability, take all their tools and work on their hunting process...the art of hunting without hunting!

Love stumping and roving. Totally agree it shows you what kind of shots you're actually capable of.

Hey! Yes! I agree - my first solid memories shooting were not at targets- which I know I did!- it was stump shooting though- i recall many of those

The ACE blunt is superb for roving...and you can get it in weights to match your broadheads

100 percent! I use ACE now over everything else- I do have a few glue on Judos with heavier inserts but the ACE Hex blunts seem great for smashing tough stumps without any arrow damage..

I started bowhunting in 1980, bear whitetail hunter with no sights, couldn't hit a truck at 20 yds. Got a sight for Christmas that year and put in on my bow (had to cause my sister gave it to me). With the sight on I could put all my arrows into a milk jug at 20 yds. Killed my first deer with a bow that fall. The next year during gun season I shot 2 bucks in 2 days both at 15 yds. I realized I could have killed them with my bow and I then became strictly a "bowhunter". Back then most all of us shot fingers and rangefinders were not around. The next year I cut the cables and became a "traditional bowhunter". I was shooting an 82lb Schafer Silvertip made by Paul. I worked all spring and summer learning to shoot instinctive. STUMP SHOOTING was the glue that binded it all together. Once you trust your instincts and loose arrows it becomes magical! The Mystic Flight of the Arrow!! Great video and advice!! Truly refreshing!

Hi Dave! thank you for sharing the history! My Uncle had a Whitetail Hunter.. they all shot fingers as well! Paul made a great bow! I shot 65lb Dave Windauer model a long ways back that was the only other recurve other than the Howatts I've shot all my life that really connected with me...so stable! Thanks for the words! cheers! Another idea which I have tried, if you have an area suitable for stump shooting but not so much to shoot at, bring a ball with you. A tennis ball or smaller. Hitting that, fetching the arrow and shooting back at the ball again is fun but gives you constantly varying angles and distances. I use blunts of course. As long as it is an isolated spot away from people. Someone might like to try it.
