Fear can get in the way sometimes, but it's probably part of what makes skateboarding so much fun. This video will show you my best technique to overcome being afraid of falling on a skateboard, so you can stop being scared and finally start landing all of those tricks you've been wanting to learn.
If you're interested in what gear I use to skate and film my videos, here are some links to the equipment I use:

Well here's my story; I was never really into sports of any kind until I started longboarding but I'm such a p*ssy in everything in life where I need to take risks. And then last December I made a new friend who has been skating for 14 years. And I fell in love with skateboarding I was so sketchy in the beginning but I took small steps I love transition skating. At first riding down fakie off a quarter scared me and now I go really high! But the one thing I just cannot commit to is dropping in and jumping tricks. In February I tried to drop in with help of skate buddies so one person would help me holding my hands I dropped in like 5 times and fell everytime it was okay . This was a quarter without coping btw. And then someone said you can also just roll in the quarter and I tried that. That's when I fell and my kneecab was dislocated I stepped of my deck while riding. I can drop in on a bank. But whenever I stand on the smallest quarter I get anxiety and panic . I really want to do it and I know I can, but my brain tells me otherwise and somehow I'm so scared and cannot commit... And I tried it a couple of weeks ago just to be in the drop in position and I started crying of fear. It's really demotivating me to continue on skateboarding because I don't feel like I'm making progress and it makes me sad has anybody experienced this kind of fear?

Its a part of skateboarding its like a relationship theres gonna be parts that wear you down but as long as you dont give up keep trying youll do it. Maybe you just need the right ramp a more mellow one maybe wearing some protective gear might help ? Try whatever you can to give you that confidence but whatever you do dont give up you got this!!! I just started skating after taking over a 6 year hiatus and im scared to try a lot but I dont give up

Go slow, fear is hacked progressively. Regarding demotivation, think about how rewarding it all was when You got really high as You relate! Eventually You will drop-in safe and nice, but that maybe after taking small steps, maybe on mellow slopes first. The point being, skateboarding rewards Will outweight frustration, but skipping stages is not the way. I learned the wrong way when I was young but now at 46, never take great steps, I assume that my goal is at least a month away and only through patience. And yes, I experienced that kind of fear, but I hacked it progressively, and I know It Will assault me again, same recipe. Good luck bro.

This exact thing happens to me. I know I can drop in, but something about standing on a steep edge makes it much scarier than a bank :(
@sethbryant7894
@sethbryant7894 Жыл бұрын
The best advice I can give for dropping in is to remember to commit putting your weight in the correct area at the right times. If you don't commit and put your weight where it's needed, you VERY quickly lose all control. Too far on the tail, the board flies from underneath you. Too far on the nose, you fall forward and eat it. You have to put a LOT of your weight towards the nose as you initially go down, then right at the part where the curve starts leveling out, do a pump motion with your legs and straighten your body out, staying in riding stance while evening out the weight just slightly more towards the tail. This ensures you have enough weight on the nose to keep the board level with the quarter as you go down, but not over commiting in one direction and slamming when you need to level out. This is going to sound condescending, but remember to focus on the physics of it to get over that mental hurdle. You're afraid of falling in either direction, but that will only happen if you do not plan accordingly and adjust where it is needed. The most common thing I see when people do quarters is not putting enough weight on the nose initially because they're scared of falling, but that's the only possible way to go down correctly. Just keep practicing and try to overcome the fear of not doing it correctly. If you know all the steps, tell yourself that you have everything you need to know! It's all about just putting that knowledge into practice and believing in yourself. You're probably going to fall MANY times learning this and skateboarding period, but it's better to fall in the correct way, not just slam first try and be afraid of ever doing it again.

@NeverStopImprovingSB
@NeverStopImprovingSB 5 жыл бұрын
Can you do it on a board with the wheels and trucks taken off like on some carpet or on a trampoline, maybe? It sounds like your brain developed some kind of a phobia of pop shuvits as like a defense mechanism, and if possible, you gotta try to rewire that part of your brain and make it understand that pop shuvits won't always cause you to break your wrist. Maybe try it on a board with wheels but just on some turf on a football field or something? Anybody else had this happen and have any ideas?

I learnt varials before kickflip, so now I struggle with them. 360 flips use a lot of force, a shuvit is quite light footed. I compare them to pressure flips, it should just land where you started. Try Fakie shuvs cos they roll with your momentum. To be fair, if your dialled at the tricks you mentioned, your pretty good. But I know how annoying it can be to learn a lot and one simple trick seems to evade you. I swear to God I've done a Nightmare flip down a 4 set, but I've never landed a kickflip.

I try to calm myself and get rid of negative thoughts, i keep repeating to myself that i can do it, and then without thinking i just go for it!! And yes i may fall but every attemp is a step closer. Every attempt counts!!

Its different from anything else I've learned because of the fear. Learning music is definitely hard, but I don't hurt myself when I grind arpeggios. I'm still learning how to balance and tic tac, and im scared. But I'm proud to say it because I'm addicted to the feeling of being scared! I fell a few times and it wasn't bad. The millisecond when you realize you're about to fall makes me feel alive, lol

I'm a beginner and I want to share my learning process on dealing with fear and finding the limit. Recently I've been practicing the manual. I always have this fear of having the tail fall to the ground too fast and my whole body falling backwards while doing the manual. So I wanted to face that fear by simply rolling, lifting the nose, but then purposefully ending the manual by getting my tail to touch the ground to stop. It was scary at first because I didn't know how to do this consistently. I wanted to do this so that I know what it feels to have the tail go too far down quickly. From doing this a couple of times, I quickly found that it's actually really hard to get the tail to touch the ground unless I apply some power with or add weigh on to my back foot. So now, when practicing my manuals, I know that it would be very unlikely for me to have the tail touch the ground unless my weight is too much on the back foot. Following this exercise, I was more comfortable in doing mini manuals (like a split second of the front wheels being up) without the fear of slipping the tail under me because I previously had felt that limit. Now, I'm continuing to practice it by adjusting other factors. e.g. now I'm seeing if I can go higher with my nose and how much that upsets the balance and how much I'd have to shift my weight. To be continued....

Great vid man! Soooo many times I can feel and see the trick in my mind but as soon as I roll up and pop my mind loses he trick lol. It’s sooo hard to go from one foot lands to a full commit I keep yelling in my head JUST GO FOR IT IT WONT HURT! The worst pain in skating is when fear ruins a sess and keeps you down

I know this vid was made a couple years ago but I’m watching this during the whole coronavirus situation. I used to skateboard years ago but could never get past my fear of falling and hurting myself. But now, I’ve got time on my hands and a skateboard still in good condition. I’m seriously considering taking up skateboarding again and I just want to get past this fear. Great vid, I think it’s what I needed to hear. Going to ease into it in the next few days and practise my olly with my wheels on the grass but the tail over the concrete to get that pop. Hope it works.

Honestly I didn't even need to watch the video comments alone helped I M new to skating and seeing other skaters be so supportive is so cool thank you to everyone who commented Yesterday I fell and hit my head in the ground and I was so scared it was something serious thankfully it wasn't but it was enough to scare me lol But I guess that's what makes skateboarding so appealing the risk your willing to take the adrenaline I feel when I ride because of the chance I might fall it also makes it that much more rewarding Don't know how to end this lol guess I ll go skate now

@NeverStopImprovingSB
@NeverStopImprovingSB 5 жыл бұрын
No video specifically on that topic just yet, but just speaking from my own experience, I would say try to use the fact that you got injured as learning tool rather than letting it hold you back from getting beyond where you were when you got hurt (i.e. modify how you're doing that trick to remove the danger rather than avoiding it altogether), and take small steps to get back to where you were because you'll need time to fully recover from the injury.
