Most modern fire support vehicles have a highly mobile 6x6 or 8x8 wheeled chassis. These vehicles are relatively light and have high speed and mobility on hard surface roads. Their armor protection is limited. In combat, these vehicles often exploit their mobility for shoot-and-scoot type attacks in order to avoid enemy fire.
Their main advantages over tanks are significantly lower production and operational costs. Also higher level of strategic and tactical mobility. So these can respond rapidly to various threats. Main battle tanks require heavy equipment transporters to relocate them if long distances are involved. So the fire support vehicles have comparable firepower to main battle tanks and in some cases can even supplement them. However, their mobility comes at a cost of limited armor protection.

@FUCK SHIT Dude this how it's really works: the old C1 everyone knows isn't one of the best, but is still a good heavy tank, is pretty much outdated but also everyone knows that for Italian purposes for the future the C1 is more than enought since we are not going to a real war any soon, for fighting talibans the C1 is more than enought XD. In any case the problems of the C1 are the armor, the aiming system, the lower speed compared to an Abrams or Leopard (65 km / h against 75) and the lower rotation speed of the turret. All of these issues will be fixed with the Ariete update. The current Iveco engines will change with new and more powerful ones so as to be able to reach those speeds (75 / 80km / h) even with greater armor. For more armor, 2 kits (PSO and WAR) are already available, both of which will need to be mounted. The turret rotation system will be the same as the brand new B2 Centauro currently considered by experts to be among the best if not the best fire support light tank in the world, as well as: cannon (which respects the latest NATO ammunition standards) aiming systems, night vision, thermal, on-board computer, JAMMER ... Practically all the latest technological discoveries of the C2 Centauro XD. In this way we would be able to maintain the operational capabilities required by the NATO missions for the next 10/15 years without having to redesign a new tank from scratch and with the interchangeable components between B2 Centauro and C1 Ariete (a lot of money saved). In the meantime, we can start planning a future C2 Ariete or we can contribute to the project and adopt a new European tank (this was also talked about in Europe). I would like to remind you that Italy has always respected NATO standards and, unlike other countries in the alliance, has always participated in all its missions; in Afghanistan we control the western part of the country (the one around Harat) one of the most dangerous since in addition to the Taliban there are also many opium traffickers (not too happy about our presence) and, if the United States will leave the country and ISAF, we will go from being second for controlled km2 to first.

Prova a far scontrare un T-80D e un centauro2, il cacciacarri è spacciato a meno che non abbia molta fortuna e riesca ad assestare il rimo colpo. i centauro sono unità di supporto che vanno integrate con i carri. Poi vanno bene anche da soli ma solo se si sta parlando di fronti nei quali il nemico non ha armi tecnologiche e pesanti, tipo le missioni di pace nei paesi disastrati.

It's due to Italian geography and cold war scenario. The Centauro was originally created because, due to cold war, much of the Italian Army was deployed on the nort-eastern border with Jugoslavia, but what if the Varsaw Pact would have attempted a landing across the 45 miles of the Otranto Strait that separates the heel of Italy from Albania? A tank can't really cover the 900km that separates Friuli form Puglia on its tracks and then fight, and it needed time to load them on trains. A wheeled vehicle instead could cover that distance in few hours, and provide heavy fire to harass the invaders. until the arrival of the armoured forces. Post cold-war scenarios favoured those kind of vehicles, so Italy had an advantage.

11:33 it's the opposite, b2 is on the left and b1 is on the right, you can notice by only watching it two fundamental differences, it's shape (the b2 is higher) and the machine gun turret which can be controlled from inside the tank on the b2 but not on the b1, anyway nice video👍

I think the Italian CENTAUTRO is the best, it has the best gun power, as well as the armor and mobility. But this list is not fair since the TOP 4 were wheeled tanks acctually, they were essentially the turret of a tank plus the chassis of a wheeled vehicle, with better armor, mobility and fire control system. But the latter list, especially the three Chinese vehicles, is defined by the PLA as a kind of "Wheeld Armoured Support Vehicle", with only lightweight armour and simplified fire control system, designed primarily to support infantry assault rather than counter armour. In the PLA establishment, when a light armour combat is required, the first choice will be the Type 15 light tank (35 ton class), but not these wheeled armoured vehicles.

sorry. no. Type 16 maneuver combat vehicle also has 105 mm L/52 gun and its newer. i has better mobile power and better fire control system that the recoil control technology, fire control system, and other technologies from Type 10 tanks have been appropriated, and when the vehicle is aimed at a target, the turret moves while the main gun is pointed at the target even if the vehicle body moves, thus providing a high hit rate while the vehicle is moving.

The Top 4 of this list does not have the turret of a tank, they don’t have but less then 100mm of armor It’s just a big turret to handle the much more advanced targeting systems, the bigger guns and a more ergonomic crew layout

Il Centauro 2 ha il cannone da 120 mm. e pesa quasi 30 ton. per una velocità max. di spostamento di 105 km. orari, niente al mondo è pari a lei, come prestazioni, e come prezzo...6 milioni dollari l'una!

Italy : Has 3 of the 4 best Tank Destroyer in the world. Also Italy: Has the worst Nato tank in service. I guess that since most of our territory is made of hills and mountains, we don't really need tanks anyway, in our case, flexibility is better than heavy armor.

@Legio XXI Rapax It was ok when it was developed, but today it's old, it never got modenised. I mean in 2020 the gunner still has an obsolete first generation thermal sight. While the commander doesn't have thermal sights at all. The armor in the turret front is only 450-550 mm against APFSDS, while the hull doesn't have composite armor at all, only 50 mm of steel.

For the ignorants who complain about C1 Ariete or they say: " I didn't know italian military industry was this good" there's some facts: 1st Leonardo, Fincantieri, Iveco-Oto melara, Beretta&partners are one of the finest military industries in the world and italian military industries can't get more orders for next few years because we cannot meet demand with current infrastructure, the real problem is that we are selling weapons to aggressive countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia (unoffically in war with Yemen), Turkey, Egypt exc. thanks to permission given by some old governments with contracts already stipulated, (especially Renzi government) ethically not the best but let's say that money is money. 2nd the old C1 everyone knows isn't one of the best, but is still a good heavy tank, is pretty much outdated but also everyone knows that for Italian purposes for the future the C1 is more than enought since we are not going to a real war any soon, for fighting talibans the C1 is more than enought XD. Lol. It's not accurate at all. No Polish, Russian, or any other country with these type of vehicles but 3 Italian vehicles that are the same and 2 Chinese that are the same is hilariously bad. None of these vehicles are "Hunter killer" and none of them are tank destroyers. They are all fire support vehicles.

I think you underestimate the AMX 10rc, my favorite is the centauro with 120mm installment.

No the amx 10rc is very old. Id even say its obsolete nowadays. Used to be the best of the best but due to it having never been seriously modernized since its introduction, especially when it comes to the FCS its now compmetely outdated compared to a Centauro. What ultimately remains good with tje 10rc is the capability/operational cost ratio which is very high in the countries where it currently operates and where the worst it could face would be some old t55 or t62 and maybe early variants of t72/64 which it can still destroy

@@leneanderthalien Yes that's what i said basically, when the worst you could even encounter as a tank is an old T72, you don't need cutting edge tech since mid 80's tech is more than enough to deal with that kind of threat and for a reduced cost.

I expected the Rooikat to be in the top 5 actually and did not expect the AMX 10RC to be in the list at all... AMX 10RC stopped being a relevant high intensity conflict long long time ago, i'd say 30years, it's one to two generation behind all the other vehicles listed in this video. Nowaday, it's only good to patrol in African and blast the ocasionnal T-54/55/62 but not much else, that's why French army is right now replacing it with the EBRC Jaguar that have been in the works for almost 15 years now.

@John Matrix Thanks for reminding us but that is irrelevant and should not disqualify the Rooikat from being on this list. Let me also remind you that "The Apartheid Regime" ended 26 years ago. If you equate South Africa to post-WW2 Germany and Japan, (both known for the worst imaginable atrocities) 26 years on - by 1971 the world was buying Toyotas and Volkswagens by the millions!

AMX10RC is a reconaissance vehicule... French regiments equipped with it are part of the armoured cavalry, not Infantry... just saying.

Exactly and having seen it in Chad in 1983, it is an incredible armored vehicle, it is very fast, it can lower its wheels from left to right and front to back ... It is a formidable, fast blind. with good firepower ....

Rooikat is too old to be in this rank. And 76mm cannon is way too light (the 105mm one has never got into mass production).

Incorrect The Rooikat is a younger vehicle then the French AMX 10. The AMX 10 came into service in the late 70s ealry 80s. The rooikat entered service in the late 80s and early 90s. And have been upgraded to modern standard's as for the gun size well it has been up gunned to 105mm and is in service in significant number and held in storages at the armoured school and so forth. As for the 75mm we use that as there is no real threat from real mordern tanks from countries around South-Africa that can withstand 75mm rounds.

For those who call for an ariete upgrade: military is evaluating benefits/costs of upgrading our 90s tanks and prolong their life for few years. Today is uncertain for tanks future and there are not imminent uses for italian mbts. Without active protection/armour/engine/electronics upgrade they are quite useless, at the actual state they can't see combat, but this applies to all mbt excluding new gen and upgraded vehicle.

In logical terms, it is much more convenient to have a Centaur fulfilling reconnaissance, tank destroyer and tank roles, rather than having a tank destroyer and a tank. Also because our territory geographically speaking is not so convenient for MBTs, this is also why we have opted to have more tank destroyers in our doctrine.

There could have been no other number 1 then Centauro II. The Rooikat is missing in this list. The name of the MCV is Type 15 and I Centauro B1 120mm could be left out of this list as it was not in service but just a testbed towards Centauro II. Number 9 and 10 are basically the same vehicle, just a slightly newer variant. Centauro B1 and II are probably different enough for separate listing.

If they are supported by infantry and you have a logistics system = yes. If not = no. Eventually you will run out of fule, ammo or break down. Then you will be trapped in an iron coffin.

No, fuel, ammunition and restoration will be very expensive and components hard to find, it will probably break after a year or two if you're lucky and if It doesn't get stolen by raiders or destroyed since you'll be a primary target for any survivor +And firing primary gun or machine guns would attract a lot of unwanted attention

There’s already a project and funds to upgrade the Ariete, it will be fitted with the same high pressure gun as the Centauro 2 (the one at the first place) and will also receive completely new systems.. the update will serve to bring the Ariete till a new tank is developed

yeah, the first 3 prototypes are going to be upgraded by 2022 then if they are ok we will upgrade 125 Ariete on a total of 200 to keep them till 2030.

Fun news. In Italy recently a centauro was taking part in nighttime military exercises a shooting range when it mistakenly fired on a nearby farm. The owners of the farm discovered that around one hundred chickens had been killed
