Everyone thinks they know a lot about trains (specifically steam) until they start to work on them. Then they realize how much of the story they've missed.

There should be a part 2 and it should be called the 10 levels of Thomas the tank engine

I'd say a soft 10, maybe 9.5 on this scale, though I generally try to be the quiet sage over the raging insufferable nerd. Most seem to be all right with that, many just wander over and ask me questions about trains at random.
@Railfan105.3 ай бұрын
2:18 Apparently i'm at least a level 6 because that's a reading 6 chime, not 5. Edit: it appears i am nearly level 8. I can definitely tell apart some similar classes of locomotives, but i'm not necessarily proficient at it.

Id say I’m about a level 6 Also that Awdry joke got the first chuckle of today, so congrats

I’m basically somewhere between 6 to 8 because I have a strong knowledge of their history, sounds and certain looks. Thank goodness there isn’t a level 11 which is “Replicating every train history by heart as if it is like a recreation of a documentary”
@dragonmahle423 ай бұрын
I'm on level 7 because I can tell by shapes and some small details (if its steam), good thing I'm not a bad nerd and my teachers likes my knowledge, my sketch arts and some historical things I made

Well, what does it mean when you start pretending to be a train like thinking you’re a BNSF SD40-2 going from this side of a place to this other side of a place
@SteamboatWilley3 ай бұрын
I reached level 4 pretty early on in life, like age 6 or 7. Now I'm probably somewhere around level 8.

I'd put myself at like a level 9 but EXCLUSIVELY for diesel locomotives and railroads in the Pacific Northwest. Anything outside of that category I have absolutely 0 knowledge of.
@SodorTrain12254 күн бұрын
I'd say about 5 and a half. I can't identify types of horns and whistles off the top of my head, without Googling them. Though, I do know what a Nathan K5HL is, since it's used on GEVOs. Other than that, I don’t really know much else. And I'm fully and utterly content with that. I don’t know EVERYTHING, but it's nice to have just a small understanding of trains.
@Trainhead233 ай бұрын
realistically i try and stay quiet about trains outside of discord, but...i'm an unfortunate 9 in terms of steam, idk much about diesel or electrics to an existent.

I'd say generally a 6 or 7, and 8 or above if it's Soviet subway trains (E series, Ema-502, 81-717, and such). I know most of the electrical systems on the 717.

I have been obsessed with trains since before I can remember. I'm 28 now. My earliest memory involving trains is when I was three. Get on my level.

I’m around a 7. I can identify locomotives by class and (if it’s steam) profile.

2:44 imma out myself as a higherlevel dipshit but the -2 was for upgraded electronics from the origional batch , with the -3 being another tech upgrade (that was also bundled with that cab style) For example an SD 45 is longer and more fanned than a 40/40-2 but short than a stancab 50 or 60 Aswell as manufacturerers often having styles lke EMD trapazoid roof shapes , with alco usually being a rounded roof , baldwin often using steamerlike ways to solve stuff or how emd switchers are usually called MP[__]DC while alco used a numbering of SW[__]00 , and distinguishing between GE and EMD is most prevelant at the front with the nose of an EMD being closer to older roofs with the windows on the sides having an extra triangilar cutout aligning with the noseshape whole Ge' Gevos have a pyramidal nosecone with a central fold and rectangularised windows aswell as the Dynamic energy burnoff fans being more shifted out on EMD's(nuts) , however the biggest diffrence is that EMD use a 2 stroke engines while GE uses a 4 stroke engine So yes i am a capitol F derogatory _Foamer_

Nicely put down in a nut shell.I'm a 9.5 I guess. Level 11 would be the stage where you can identify technical things like valve gear and how if functions and different types of bogies. Level 12 probably when you know all the systems in a diesel and electric and even know how use fire as steam engine efficiently.
