I'm a collector of stuff by nature. Then I discovered that I actually get more of a kick out of getting rid of stuff than I ever did shopping for it. 10 boxes so far and counting.....All gone!

I am poor. I have stuff, a lot of it is old. Some people call it antique. I have furniture that you can lift up without the bottom falling out. It was not expensive, it was not bought on impulse. It is worth it.I have neither debt,nor a credit history. I don't have excess money to put in savings, other than change, As a consequence of being financially responsible, I am not extended the credit I need. While I don't need to own a house, I do wish I had a (safe) car. Riding a bicycle in rural South Dakota is really dangerous in the winter. Getting groceries is a nightmare and raising your kids that way can be heartbreaking at times. Any car I have owned was bought for cash, and driven until repairs were no longer feasible. Poverty makes me clingy: I save broken bicycles for parts.I have old clothes for patching newer ones, and to use as cleaning rags. Sometimes I can't tell the difference.I wear clothes to be appropriately modest, and stay warm.Self expression is a luxury I can't afford. I don't buy make up, and last October,I donated my hair to pediatric cancer. I figured it would help someone, and save money and time. I have a busted air mattress in the basement, so I have patch material in case the one I sleep on starts leaking. I would love to get rid of all the stuff I no longer use, but I would be insulting people if I tried giving it away! And I can not afford to "have it hauled to the dump", because the hauling and the dump both cost money. Minimalism is a simple idea. It is not easily applied. The one luxury I allow myself to have as a full-time student, who is required to use internet, is an online streaming movie provider. Why? I never have to watch commercials.Therefore no one can force me into social comparison and "enlighten" me about all the 'individuality' and ' freedom' I am missing.

Every time I return from a trip of living out of a suitcase, I realize how many things in my house I don't need and wouldn't miss if I never saw again.

I own about 48 things and I love how easy everything is for me now. Clean your house, clean your mind!

I am definitely in the partial-hypocrite group in that I talk of minimalizing my life but don't always follow through. This talk reminds me of a good quote from Marcus Aurelius: "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one"

I feel great! I've been minimizing for a while now. I am ecstatic about how much more quickly I can get through house cleaning now. In washing just a few pieces of silverware instead of a few bundles now. I had always dreamed of a beautiful home. Now I believe I have one.

Dave Bruno is the founding father of modern day minimalism. While I disagree with him regarding religion (he is Christian; I am atheist) I will say that he brought up some profound issues in his book and the 100 Thing Challenge is the the benchmark for minimalist aspirations. All in all: Dave Bruno is great!

I just signed on to another 13 month lease on my apt and my goal is to not bring anything into my space but consumables and to continue purging everything I don't need, use or love. I started purging about 3 weeks ago and immediately...like literally the next day I felt SO much better! I've never felt so free and light! And I'm not even done! 😃

7 years ago me and my children sold off everything accept the furniture, kitchen things, most of the clothes and with two cases each went to another country for 3 months. We rented an apartment with simple furniture by the sea in a sunny country (we are from Sweden), bought som vintage furniture and fixed them to make it some personal and two surfboards....about a week after the waves were gone. Well, we stayed for three month got back and the kids started in school again. Next time I will do it by ship.

Lets prove to ourselves that we can thrive and be successful without requiring excess. Maybe the decluttering and decreasing excess possessions to manage might give us what we need to be able to level up in all areas of life.

I can see this as the beginning of the emancipation of the industrial slaves of Asia.

i tell the same thing to my parents and wife and they are like you are not motivated in your life...,,they always say you should had zeal to buy more things.

i come from 3rd world country. Here mostly are minimalist. Its normal for us here. When we have extra cash. We put in the banks or do investments.

They give away lots but force 1600sq ft houses to support failed broke infrastructure. Money is uncreative, inefficient, dangerous, dumb, EVIL. Efficiency breeds efficiency, right is all we ever needed. Moderation kicks in day one.

Okay now. I have more than 100 things that I am the "keeper of" . Heirlooms, letters, photos, postcards, books, sheet music etc that are beyond monetary value- and they are not mine. I , while living, am the keeper till they are passed down. Anyone else in the same boat?

I don't think we'd necessarily loose jobs. We'd loose products, but we may increase services. Whatever product variety is lost might be made up for by the QUALITY of what is left...

Why do I feel like he is trying to sell me stuff?

The thing that we have to come to grips with is that our economy is built on obesity and excess. If we could reach a tipping point and, let's say, 37 percent of Americans became conscious minimalists, it would mean the loss of massive amounts of jobs. This, in my view, is fine and I intend to simplify myself, though I sort of think a random number like Dan's 100 Things is not for me (too SEO-ish by half). But if we are going to do this, really do it, we'd better have a plan for what comes next, and what we want the world to look like outside of our own tiny house lives.

I'm reading his book and it's really good... but he is not much of a public speaker...

I'm a minimalist but 100 things is pretty rough. I do like a challenge like this one though.

Smart old pep, we have tons, are done consuming, economy survival doomed, targeted youth don't need old(ie: apple success). Tech, comm, energy lull, time right right.......The Venus Project the first scratch. Efficiency breeds efficiency=infinite=moderation=feasibility. Jacque Fresco use him like other elders once they are gone you will wish you new more and Jacque never had to go. We will never learn all he knows. I am still learning from my Dad resting over 10 years now. The biggest sin money cast our desire for new when echoes from old , nature, animals, go ignored.

He doesn't explain which especial and excellent results he has got. I hear just words that the results are great. Honestly, I don`t feel any real inspiration without examples or explaining of some changes in the people's lives. The speaker offers to do something and assures that it helps to solve the problem. He means if you buy too much - just don't do it! Well, simple desicion, but how can somebody buy less if he wants to buy more? How? And what are the reasons of the problem? Why do people want to buy so much? I have a vision. People buy too much because of the emptiness in their souls. They want to fullfill the emptiness, the gap. Will buying less help to fulfill the gap? Don't think so. Why their souls are empty? I really think that the people's souls are empty because this gap is a place for God. No God - no happiness. This is my oppinion

soooo, a person who owns a multi family and has to keep certain supplies and tools on hand to fix things, help tenants, has to get rid of them? You are so young! I dont buy anything....use what i have, but to toss what I need for my work as an artist, landlord, seamstress, etc....Much of my furniture found on the street, tv left behind by a tenant, lamp left by a tenant, geez. you dont get it what it means to be self employed.

soooo a musician has to give up the music, instruments, that took a lifetime to accumulate! in this new minimal world there is no room for artists and musicians...Do you 100 things people have any hobbies or work as an artist? do you have any clue how costly artist, musician materials are? throw them out and buy every week? geez louise.
