@@TheCrimsonPope At the beginning the character Donny is writing his experience and saying "this is a true story", that was a literary device to drive the narrative. Richard Gadd and Donny Dunn are not the same person. Donny Dunn is a character in a show. His career is different than Richard's, his love life is different, his living situation was not the same.

She claimed to have never seen the show, yet explained the name behind baby reindeer, which was only released at the end of the show. Then was trying to say that she wasn’t her then going back and saying she was. But either way, it seems like she is just pissed that she didn’t get paid for her “likeness”. This is exactly true. Based on a true story means BASED on it. Meaning some things may be added, removed or changed for a variety of reasons including making it easier to understand in a movie form, making it more interesting, or making it short enough to be a movie or TV series. They're fixated on a line a CHARACTER says, but if they included that disclaimer prior then whats said is covered. She is a stalker, this isn't her first victim and she's going to use this to both get his attention again, no matter how and get fame because to people like that attention is attention. Good or bad. @@ashildrtheswift3028 and that's where the issue comes from. Without clarifying that 'this is a true story' about the characters, due to the character (who is the real man), writing 'this is' rather than 'based on' or 'these events are true to the story of the character', creates the debate on whether it is the real-life story, or if it's a dramatisation of it. It sounded so weird that a stalker would do this... Until I remembered how my stalker did the same thing when he thought something I said or posted was about him. I think it's about control and wanting to still be in this person's life no matter what. You see, she was able to insert herself into her victims' life all over again. When it comes to obsession, stalkers get blinded by the possible consequences they may face if it means being closer to their victim.

she ruined her own life by being a creepy stalker. I have absolutely no sympathy for stalkers because they drive their victims to despair and ruin their lives. I know mainly women who were victims of stalkers and it was truly scary even just witnessing it. One of my friends even thought of committing a crime so she'd end up in prison where he couldn't get to her. And the police don't do anything except offer to file a restraining order, even when there are death threats. When stalkers send death threats a restraining order isn't gonna protect the victim, because the first time that restraining order is violated, it's already too late. And even if they don't do anything beyond the violation of the restraining order and the police can actually arrest them, how long are they gonna be put away? In some cases they are let out the very next day. Sometimes they just have to pay a fine and that's it. You know how frustrating and distressing it is, when your safety is in jeopardy every day and nobody can help you? You know their name, maybe even their address, their face, sometimes their phone number, you write down everything they've done to you, but nothing is being done to protect you.

People saying that the stalker is the victim need to go touch grass or something. Like, what are we trying to do here?? Saying that a stalker was done bad because she's a woman? Or are we trying to obfuscate further by putting the blame on the guy here. i get it, he's not a squeaky clean person himself, but jeezus a stalker is a stalker and shouldn't be taken lightly!! Would people have been this 'kind' to a male stalker who stalker a woman, and who'd not only out himself as THE stalker from the show, but also, to no one's pinpoint- go and say this shows defames him? This woman is clearly seeking attention, and quite possibly very mentally ill. Maybe hence the whole 'not outing' the real person. And yet she clearly chose to respond. But to say that the guy is the bad one for sharing his harrowing experience is... just mind numbingly stupid to see. i'm glad GC at least touched the issue here.

I think it was incredibly stupid of the alleged internet detectives to send death threats and aggravate a situation they were told was in the past and dealt with. I don't care what gender or non-gender someone is. Stalkers are stalkers, and men apparently can't be stalked or assaulted. They can, contrary to that overall belief. I've met men who were. They weren't taken seriously. If it's true that "Martha" did all that, and that "Martha" is Fiona, then she should be jailed. What she did was wrong. I call a spade a spade here in the fact of her stalking him. Fiona wasn't connected to it until terrible people found her online. He said not to do it, and of course, they did. Netflix saying she was jailed when she wasn't is the problem. That she has grounds on. Him going back to "Martha" is realistic of what it looks like. You go back until you realize you can leave the situation. That part always takes time, and only then can you heal. Let's not victim blame him here. He wasn't perfect either, but he was still a victim.

Sadly stalkers don't get a lot of jail time. In my country the most severe punishment is a one year prison sentence. Most get off with just paying a fine. I just researched and in the UK it's apparently 10 years max, good for them. But I think stalking in many countries is still not treated as a serious crime and often times the police act too late. I mean what good does a restraining order do, if the first violation ends with the stalker killing the victim?

Stalkers do this & say they don’t do this & use anything- I do the creator was stalked - I had to deal with a stalker who did go as far as lie to law enforcement - there is some mental component to it, but as an artist - be careful with stalker stories as they can use anything to continue- she may believe she was acting normally the whole time & believes she may win - I hope she does get help as I believe the creator has earned this success, stalkers are ALWAYS hard to get rid of & every advice given like - avoid them - turns out you bullied them - so they do others as well. Every loop hole was used - every flaw was used, trauma- that is in the show - so, my advice in this situation- don’t have anything debatable- you will not get anywhere & that is something I don’t want anyone to witness - this is her stalking the same person just international at this point.

the show was based on gadd’s own set, people had heard the story before but he had made it so clear when the show came out, he DID NOT want the people to be outed. i believe the quote was “if i wanted them found i would have made a documentary”. i feel like its been lost on people that this is his own story and the empathy he showed for “martha” in the finale should have shown to people to leave it alone, however fiona outed herself - no criminal records were found online just a few old news articles on reddit. gadd to this day has not confirmed or denied her identity because he never wanted it know. its started to feel like revictimisation.

the thing is that it didn't say based on true events or anything similar, the show opens with "this is a true story" - or at least it did when i first watched a couple weeks ago, not sure about now since i haven't rewatched it. that very thin line can cause presumption of absolute truth, especially with people who don't have the greatest media comprehension (which as we've seen lately, it's a lot). that being said, yeah, i can't find myself having a lot of sympathy for fiona losing her privacy when she's being accused of the same crime. in the past few years i learned that in south korea it was required for news outlets to hide the faces of criminals in order to protect their privacy during trials & after they served their sentences. that was recently changed after many years of the general public pleading to government official to release their info due to the high rates of sexual crimes in s. korea. there had been instances of people not knowing their next door neighbor was an offender because they never saw their faces on the news & their real name was never released to the public either. fiona is being accused of violent crimes yet gaad had the decency of changing her name & some of the personal details. yes he never made it hard to find her by using the real tweets & messages she sent his way - but also what was he supposed to do? go to his stalker & say "hey, i'm doing a netfilx series based on the play i wrote about how you stalked, harassed & assaulted me & my ex. delete your public tweets so people won't find you." why the hell would he do that when he's trying to get her to stay away. was netflix supposed to do that too? no! if she won't delete them of her own accord, let them be up as a warning. i don't think she deserved the death threats either but come on, she was threatening the guy every day for years & now he's getting to tell his story to everyone. i do agree with the people saying internet sleuths need to tone it down, the death threats are too much, always, but again, these were public tweets where she named herself. she has gone on public interviews & publicly admitted parts of the show are true. i don't think we'll ever get her to admit all of it was true because again, some parts aren't & she doesn't seem mentally sound enough to grasp the gravity of her actions even after all this time. that lawsuit is going to go nowhere for her, so she will probably have to settle unless she wants to be counter-suited for the actual crimes she committed. i commend netflix for having gaad's back in all of this.

Interesting - I am in somewhat similar situation as Gadd. I was horrifically pursued by a person aiming lawsuits at me and my partner in order to bankrupt us - until the court put a stop to it. It's a very interesting story about a mentally ill person and is a tale worth telling. HOWEVER, this person is the kind of guy who would then sue for deformation. Crazy times.

Regarding the background check. I see that in scotland, 15 years after your conviction if you were 18 or older at the time of the crime, your criminal record expires and so you can apply to get it removed from a disclosure certificate. Her alleged crimes must be in the early 2000s maybe 90s, so it could apply to her. Does that affect the background check?
@Sidera17

Removing morality from this, the legal issue becomes: If the stalker was never actually convicted of crimes, but Netflix makes a claim that she was convicted of multiple crimes as "a true story," whether or not her behavior was shitty, if the Netflix claim is false, it can go on to impact her life in the future. I'm pretty certain that a law has been broken in that case. Legality versus morality sometimes don't intersect. She might have done all that shitty stuff but still win the lawsuit because Netflix broke a law, not her.

Its absolutely insane that after all these years this insane that she can still come after him for telling his story. Just looking at those tweets makes it obvious she's a stalker. Shows BASED on a true story do add things for one thing, and then saying "they used our tweets!!!" that's how they found me!! They found her identity because he used PUBLIC tweets between them. Don't send pubic tweets if you don't want the public to read them. He has the right to tell his story. She's just doing this to victimize him again. She wants the attention. Anyone else would have immediately deleted that Twitter page, stayed quiet and let it die down. No sympathy here. Now maybe she has a tiny idea of how shed made him feel.

I don't usually binge watch anything except KZfaq and Twitch, but Baby Reindeer was tough to watch that I almost cried. It's even more sad because it was based on what Richard Gadd, himself, went through and he created the show and acted in the show. I'm still confused about all of this stuff that's continuing to come out with this situation. I understand Netflix did a horrible job in covering "Martha's" identity but I don't understand why she's trying to sue Richard Gadd and Piers Morgan. I disagree with some of Piers Morgan's comments in the past but wasn't Fiona the one that decide to go on Piers Morgan show?

I had a stalker who honestly was a lot like Fiona. It wasn't as bad as it was only cyber and I didn't know her in person. But she did find my address and threaten to swat me which is pretty terrifying. But as it was woman-stalking-woman and only online it wasn't treated very seriously. Eventually the police convinced her to stop but it took several visits to do so.

Considering she outed herself as being "the stalker" and confirmed that the texts in the show were exact quotes from real texts she sent, I'd say it's safe to say that the show was pretty accurate, so I believe Gadd. However, I don't think it's right for him to extenuate his experience by making up that she was convicted several times before. I understand that it's /based/ on a true story so it doesn't have to be 100% true, but I don't think that needed to be included, to an already bad situation. But, then again, she did out herself as being the stalker. However, a negative side to sharing stories like this is the only reason Gadd was able to make the show was because he's famous and has the power and money to make it happen, so my thought is, why couldn't another rich person frame someone for their own crime? Like, what if she was rich and told the same story, making herself out to be the victim instead? Other people have the power to do this in a negative light, even though in this case, it brought attention to some important issues. So I think companies really need to be careful with the movies they write that are based on true stories. It also begs the question: How much can one bend the truth before it's not the truth anymore?

Exactly, she's not done or doing herself any favours. She should have kept quiet and if she felt wronged, then she should have taken legal action. I don't feel she is getting any money and imo whether netflix did their due diligence properly or not, from her behavior and from other people that are coming out and saying they were stalked/harrased by her I don't see how she is going to win the case.

So her going on piers morgan and saying NO ONE could stalk him are pretty suspicious to me.

As someone who was stalked by an Ex, I have a similar opinion of stalkers. Yet, when i watched baby reindear, I got such a bad vibe from Gadd. I couldn't help but relate my own exsperience to it and all i kept thinking was 'if i as a women did that, I would be blammed, socially crucified and the stalkers actions would have been justified' Also it was a hard watch becasue as a man i doubt he had any fear of her actually killing him, the fear women have daily. Even though i thought it really showed that anxiety enducing fear from stalking very well, and male sexual assalt being highlighted; as a victum, a lot of his actions were questionable. This is not victum blaming, just that this feels like a very niche exsperience of stalking, whereas the majority of it suffered by women is tied in with abuse, domestic violence, rape and and even death. Its all a bit of a mess to be honest. Again i question his actions in not making her more anonymous, especially as from what I have seen she clearly has a lot of issues and could be seen now as somewhat vunrable, instead of just being guilty of her crimes. There is no justifying her actions but i can't help but feel Gadd and netflix skated a fine line in her anonimity, and the hype that followed after was like a weird social exsperiment in marketing with finding her identity. I really hope she doesn't get more of a platform after this.

but does "based on a true story" mean anything? Horror and Drama series have been using that to pull people in, when the shows are very loosely, if even that, based on real events. An example would be Fargo. And most most period piece dramas have things added in, exaggerated or taken out. As long as it's not claiming to be a documentary, I don't see the issue on that front. This scenario of someone being able to stalk multiple people and essentially get away with it without doing any time or making any reparations, and then turn around and be able to sue one of their victims based on a harmless technicality is upsetting.

They are BASED on the book series. Also, Fiona and the actress who plays the stalker in the show do not look extremely alike. They are just both overweight so I dont understand what Fiona is on about.

I think the exact words at the beginning of the series may matter to the case, legally speaking perhaps it may depend on who says the work is “true,” the author of the script , or story, or netflix (ie who do we attribute the initial text that says “true story” from my non law expert opinion, im thinking/ wondering: If its a dramatic depiction performance/ work of art purports to tell a story from one individual character’s point of view, wouldnt the only thing that matter in regards to what they are referring to when they say “truth” be the perspective and overall feeling or narrative the protagonist experienced? true or not, the story is shown from his “truth”… besides that the story never discloses the real woman’s name, so technically their hands are clean, as shes the only one that provides evidence to the public that would link her name. The social media quotes the series depicts are true, not lies. Shes the one that left that true evidence of her dirty deeds public, enabling the ability of people to have see / connect the dots, all her, so… besides the initial “true story line” curious did the series provide any other legal disclaimers in the credits?

Nah that is STUPID and anyone who thinks this is just punishment are immature and emotionally irresponsible. EVEN IF THE ROLES WERE REVERSED. Yeah if some comes over and poisons your dog, it's messed up, they're a terrible person, and they deserve jail. But it doesn't mean I get to go out, make a movie about it, and add 17 related crimes to the case that didn't even happen. In this case, yeah she's a fkd person, but she's literally not the inflated persona in the Netflix show. She SHOULD sue if they really did make up the fact she's a previous offender.
