After travelling in countries such as Spain and France, the UK's rail infrastructure looks ancient. High speed rail must happen, and it needs to go beyond HS2. In Spain, the country would fall apart without it's AVE network.

The problem in the uk for these projects aren't money or the ability to do them. Theres a reason our rail infrastructure looks so ancient and its done on purpose. Many people who live outside the cities do not want any change and want the countryside left untouched. I have read the plan, and looked through the infrastructure pipeline, related to my job as a civil engineer. In theory, HS2 should lower ticket prices across the whole network. The current prices are regulated by the government and the reason they're high is to try and push down demand (coupled with shoddy running on the private sector end). If, and this is still a relatively big if imo, the hugely increased capacity that HS2 brings helps to even things out then they can bring down prices

As much as I admire being part of this industry and these ambitious plans, I can't help but feel they are very unachievable. On paper this level of funding and ambition looks great, but the reality is we do not have enough staff in the industry to deliver these projects. The amount of worker burnout is horrendous at the moment, plus there's the material shortage breaking every construction site in the country. I love the work I do and getting to see new investment, but I would much rather have seen this being spaced out over a longer period of time to be more reasonable with the resources we have!

I work in telecoms and in many cases the timescales we have mean we only build for the sake of building so we don't completely fail these projects, not to maximise infrastructure coverage and making sound decision's laggs significantly behind. A lot of money were printed these last 2 years and unfortunately a portion of those money will be spent stupidly and will end up in the "mates" pockets. How do you think these projects go over budget? The internal company politics on with which supplier the money ot be spent with are endless. Keep in mind the smart people working in infrastructure know that this massive spend is the time to jump in and make them and their mates some money. I've seen this in a small company and can only imagine how dirty it is in the bigger ones. And you are right, there's severe labour shortage in professionals with companies poaching labour, which only raises your costs. On the bright side, this is a great opportunity for a young proffesional like myself to gain experience.

There was a project I read about where a company wanted to build a new ultra speed maglev line like in Japan from Liverpool to Manchester to leeds and to hull, I think it said it would take 30 minutes to go the whole line, maybe it’s ambitious but definitely much better than 4 hours. Apparently Liverpool to Manchester in 7 and 9 minutes from Manchester to leeds, this would connect over 5 million people within an hour of eachother. If combined with HS2 it would be a massive improvement. We all know however the government will spend too much on HS2 and that will be it, probably won’t even reach the north and will be delayed making the “positive impact” for the north invisible. Rails probably going to be the least of their worries soon anyway with how the NHS and education is coping. “Levelling up” will be the biggest load of bullshit ever told to try and please working class voters…. But then again you never know what lies will come next.

HS2 is absolutely brilliant for growth in the UK. However, I think overall, it is a poor waste of money. I used to intern at HS2 HQ in Birmingham a few years back. The project will definitely go over budget and over time. For example, national rail and HS2 are having problems in Crewe because the signalling is different for both trains. This will cost a lot of money but one company has to pay for it. The whole situation is just too bureaucratic. I think that money for HS2 should be invested in better rolling stock, electrifying the whole railway network and re-nationialising the railway. This would be a far better outcome for everyone as it will drive prices down and more people can use the railway system. Just my two-cents.
