As you could expect, for months I've barely been able to walk down the street without being told by some stranger "Make a Wrens video! "Make a Wrens video!" So I finally did it. Hope you're all happy now.
I'd also like to personally thank The Wrens for barely having any video interviews or even filmed live performances. Behold the most 360p video I will ever make.

A band member told me in 2010 it was done and they were gonna do 2 records a year going forward lol

I rolled my eyes when another youtube documentary about a niche band that no one loves but me got pushed onto the top of my home screen and… i think that was wonderfully done. thank you.

It's so wild when someone concludes that a band isn't loved because they've never heard of them. That's not snark, but a wish that people would do even minimal research before jumping to conclusions. If a band's next album is on basically every respected outlets list of most anticipated albums for the next year, for well over a decade... it might ultimately say more about what you missed than what we loved.

one thing that will always kill me is how good the 3-4ish songs we have post-meadowlands actually are. three types of reading ambiguity is legitimately one of the best songs i've ever heard. crescent/as i've known is great. and even that pulled fences/in turkish waters quasi demo track is great

Reading ambiguity is indeed one of the greatest indie rock songs ever written. Thankfully we'll be getting Charles's record next year.

A version of the album from around 2014/2015 leaked. It's probably the unmastered version. They're demos, but they're great. Crescent in particular has seen major improvements from its original release. Greg also wrote a beautiful softer ballad that was on the tracklist, but unfortunately it probably won't see an official release. Hold On from Aeon Station is also here, but much better. It’s cryptic, depressing, and carries more meaning in context of the surrounding album. Overall, there’s a strong thematic connection to The Meadowlands in the sonic and lyrical content. It makes it even more tough to swallow that it’ll never truly come out. If there's interest, I can try to upload the files online if anyone is curious.

Watched your anime about music video and went "I wonder what other videos they have on their channel" and was surprised to see a video on one of my favorite bands of all time. My band actually played the sxsw aeon station show a year or so ago when Kevin blew out his knee one song in....talk about deflating. Great video!

Great work, what a treat to find such in depth and well researched material on a band that surely deserves it.

My town has had a band like this that was just hidden from me and broke up without me ever learning of them? That's so wild...

The Wrens is one of my personal favorite bands, with Meadowlands being in my top 10 albums of all time. And I can literally not thank you enough for making this, I had known about Car Colors and Aeon Station but not the whole almost 2 decade wait for the 4th album. I can genuinely tell you put a hell of a lot of time and care into this.

Man you’re videos are so good. 27 minutes listening to the history of a band I’ve never heard about nor was interested in. Your love and passion for music seeps out in every single one and you make me want to experience music the way you do! Hope you keep it up:)

I loved this, amazing work on telling their story. Meadowlands has been my constant companion since at least 2008. Few albums hit so deeply and also serve as a warning or even a guide in life. You captured that beautifully and I’m happy to see I’m not the only one with this weird obsession over their sound ❤

I regularly refer to both the Wrens and Silkworm as the "Pavement killers". contemporary champions within the whole slacker-ish 90s indie rock thing that just don't get talked about enough, simply because their names aren't as recognizable. Meadowlands is the undeniable masterpiece for sure. beautiful and invigorating as it is candid and suicidal. I dream of a world where "Hopeless" is as much an indie karaoke staple as "Cut Your Hair". someday !

My all time favorite concert was the Wrens at Pitchfork Fest in the mid 2000s. The whole crowd knew every word. It was a triumphant, communal experience.

Wasn't the meadowlands actually the impetus for the creation of the original pitchfork media blog? I danced with my then wife to She Sends Kisses for our first dance as a married couple. Then wife :(

4.5 does exist, is real and able to be found if you're willing to seek it out. And it is/was great, and it's a damn shame it never got released. Though I do like Charles' new version of Old Death better than the 2014/2015 one.

oh, and the aeon station songs that were on it are Hold On (wildly different version in 2014/2015), Leaves, Queens (titled Sophie), Empty Rooms (titled Haiti and with Charles singing a verse), Air (titled Face Facts and absolutely incredible IMO), and Alpine Drive (called January Piano)

Perfect is the enemy of good!!! Same thing happened with Dr. Dre's Detox, Jay Electronica's Act II, and Jai Paul's debut. It's one of the downsides of fame and trying to live up to hype.

Thanks for number girl~ I've had them on blast (among other projects you've showcased) recently, only for a new album to drop out of nowhere 4 days ago. wishing you the best and patiently waiting for the next drop (and hope you're enjoying it too)
