Victoria's 50th year as Queen did not start until June 1887, so any coins minted in the early part of 1887 (and maybe any minted in late 1886, but dated 1887) would have been the existing 'young head' versions. The 1887 maundy money also features the 'old bun head' as it was distributed in April of that year - before the Jubilee. No doubt attempting to jump onto the commercial bandwagon at the time, the Royal Mint also sold an 11-coin 1887 proof set from late 1887 with denominations from £5 to 3d, although only it sold only 797 sets in 1887-9, these sets sell for five-figure sums these days! Interesting that only silver and gold coins were minted with the Jubilee head, the bronze coins retaining the 'old bun head', although there is a pattern with the Jubilee head at the Royal Mint apparently.

I wish more coins had been minted with the gothic head design. It’s my favorite portrait of Victoria on a coin. I really want a gothic head crown, but they are more than I can justify paying for.

I tried the water and brush method on a number of whitman albums. I used a slightly different method in that I brushed water on once, left it for a few minutes and then applied water again. It worked a treat, even on the half crowns. It was a great tip. Many thanks.

Two great coins. The Jubilee was in the sets, and prob why more of those are in better condition.

I think the Young Head is nicer, you need to see them in top grade to see properly. The 1887 Jubilee version is very common, I have 3, and all in very nice condition (I do have an 1887 Young Head, but in average condition), and the same with the Sixpence and the Halfcrown. Many must have been kept, because of Victorias Golden Jubilee!

A glorious silver shilling from Victoria’s Jubilee, but with the worn bare head struck coin being of equal value or higher would point to a low mintage, probably less than 500K, just like the Salmon😂

I thought the Salmon 50p has an official mintage of around 46.5 MILLION!??

@@michaellooney1089 2020 Shields are 46M. The Salmon had an initial mintage of 500,000 with a maximum of 5M dependant on if they’re needed, right now they still look to be fairly lowly minted, but that can change

Two lovely varieties of a same year mintage. I don't have either of them, but my older coin collection doesn't have many old silver coins anyway 🤷🏻‍♂

I have the Jubilee coin. I heard that it was a withdrawn coin because it didn't have a denomination on it. I'm not sure how true that is, though..

Thank you for that,i have been given a coin collection from an old friend whose husband passed, and she didn't want it,so I'm new to this . I have a cartwheel penny coin with a Thomas Spence counter stamp on it,so im learning about him at the moment. It's so interesting to learn about.

I found an 1874 shilling on the beach metal detecting a year or two ago. You could tell it wasn't well circulated at the time of being lost, but over time it was very pitted with sand damage.

I have one of these coins but it has been enameled. Would this have been done for a set or has someone done it themselves? Just curious why it is coloured. Thanks, Alan.
