Paul Reeve recently wrote, “In June 1978 President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation which returned the church to its universal roots and restored what was lost: priesthood and temple admission to people of African descent. This did not mark something new as much as it reestablished a commitment to the founding principles of the restoration. It reconfirmed the church’s original universalism: that the human family in all of its diversity is equal in God’s sight, that Jesus Christ claims all flesh as his own, that he’s no respecter of persons, and that all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden.” In today’s episode of Church History Matters, we take a close look at the details surrounding this watershed revelation of reversion and repair. Both out on the peripheries of the church and at the heart of church headquarters within the presiding councils, we’ll see the Lord gently influencing circumstances toward the fulfillment of his purposes. Yet he waited with divine patience until all of the apostles were unified in approaching him with a desire to lift the ban. Only then would he make his will known with power. The story we trace today of how they get there under President Kimball’s gentle leadership is instructive on so many levels.

I was on my mission in Mexico when a local member mentioned the Revelation to us in Spanish. My companion and I talked about it. We decided to buy a copy of the newspaper mentioned to us. The article in Spanish was short but clear. We went to our apartment, prayed and had two impressions: 1) it's was true and from the Lord, and 2) wait for instructions from our mission president. No sooner than we were authorized to ordain all male members to the Priesthood than we met, taught, baptized and ordained a Haitian dental student in that part of Mexico for his training. By that time, everyone in our mission zone had received letters from home that our own families all sustained the Revelation.

So amazing!! I was already accepting of the revelation but I had never received a spiritual witness. It was more a blind obedience to the will of God. Now, thanks to your podcast, I have received a very personal and spiritual witness for myself becoming fully one and adding to the unity of the brethren and the will of God. Thank you so much for this incredible series/podcast

Astounding to compare President Kimball's approach to unity in the leadership vs how President Young did not seek unity when he instituted the policy.

I listened to Saints to better understand plural marriage, but it also gave me greater understanding on the faith of the members. I don't remember the name, but the black woman that they talked about in a previous episode was talked about in Saints. She had great faith, and I look up to her and am so grateful for the examples that we have. Thank you for helping me to understand a little bit better. God loves us all

This revelation it would seem at least to me, has to do with the vail or the earth being to burst. We were all born into a fallen world. Now we are all moving towards a higher holyor place ❤😊 We have declared to the whole world through all generations that the Lord wants all to come unto Him. There is no more reason for anyone to support prejudice. There is no Scriptural Base.

Line upon line - and so on - The Lord plays the Long game. We had to learn this lesson some time. 😊❤ It has been an ongoing thing from the beginning - wars have been fought over It. But as we have seen African Americans have enjoyed in our own time, a warm welcome into our Temples. Once the Atonement was made - have any done less than breathe easier happily moving forward - even in my parents house.

I think the Lord waited until it was safe in this country, in every state of this country, ti lift the ban. Once the federal government was willing to protect people who would be in mortal danger without the ban, it was lifted. Took a few extra years though.

It never seemed rught that black men should be denied the PriesthoodI. I had heard the Cain and Ham arguments for why black people couldn''t have the Priesthood. Those arguments never made sense to me because, we know that men would be punished for their own sins and not for the sins of others. I heard the argument that it was because of something they had or hadn't done in the "Pre-existence". I had no argument for that. There's no way that I could judge something like that. I was told that black people would not be denied all the blessings of God in Eternity. I was pleased that black people were given these blessings in my lifetime instead of having to wait for eternitty. I've been told that the Lord would never let His Church be led astray. Was the Church led astray? I think of the time of Moses. Not everyone was given the Priesthood, only the descendants of Levi. Why? I think that while some leaders in the Church may have had racial prejjudice (I don't know enough about them to know for sure), I suspect there's more to this story than I know.

If indeed false doctrines were taught, do you have an opinion why there’s no public apology? If we think it was God’s will…then no apology is required - then God becomes the racist one?! And, only He knows the reason for the ban. I am against any form of prejudice and racism as a person and as a member of the church. While the emphasis on Come Follow Me is never on the problematic verses, we still have passages in canonised scripture about the curse of Cain i.e Moses 7:8,22…and others. Pearl of Great Price and the BoM can lead to much prejudice and racism. It causes so much harm and hurt….The bible has its own problems too! Now we don’t want to be lazy learners by not studying the scriptures…but in order not to be a lax disciple, one needs to ignore some scriptures. We have to choose what to believe in and negotiate with the scripture text…

Actually, there are many uses of the idiom in the Bible that black is cursed, gloomy and separated from God, or His people. Not literal skin color. Marvin Perkins made some excellent videos covering idioms. Here are my notes from one: Idioms are hard to understand: Idioms do not make sense from one language or culture to another. Scripture list compiled from video “ Blacks in the Scriptures” by Marvin Perkins Mat 22:36-40. All doctrine fits into loving God and neighbor. D&C 1:23-28 all people including church leaders make mistakes. The Lord is OK with it. D&C 35:23. The Holy Ghost proves prophet’s words. Race theory invented by Johann Friedrick Blumenbach 1775. Later tried to recall his publication.People are people. All shades of brown. Black and white mixed makes gray. Idioms: phrases that do not mean what the words literally say: That smells fishy,There is a dog buried here (Swedish),He is a hard nut to crack,Break a leg, Give it a shot, It’s raining cats and dogs. Curse: separation from God and the Spirit. NOT skin color changes. Moses 5:36,38-39 Cain cursed from God’s presence. D&C 29:41 Black and white are idioms. Darkness or gloominess, dejection= black. Not skin color Righteousness, spiritual purity, happiness = white. All people are shades of brown, not shades of gray. Jeremiah 8:21 black means gloomy Jeremiah 14:2 black means gloomy,Joel 2:6 Nahum 2:10 black means frustration Job 30:30 skin is black. Sad because of trials Lamentations 5:10 skin is black like an oven. Gloomy because of starvation. 2Samuel 13:19. Tamar put ashes on her head to show her mourning. She made herself black with ashes. Gloomy 2 Nephi 5:21 full of 10 idioms. Can you see them? We are so used to idioms in our language, we can’t even see them. 1Samuel 16:7 the lord looks on the heart. How could He change appearances His children, and then claim He is only looking on the heart? He does not change skin color as a result of sin. Laman and Lemuel did NOT change skin color. Jacob 3:8 skin is part of the idiom like Job 3:30. 3 Nephi 2:15 skin is part of the idiom. Gloominess was removed and gladness and joy prevailed. Just like lamentations 5:10 Alma 3:4-6 . Why did they have to distinguish themselves after the manner of the Lamanite? A: because they had the same skin color. Most likely a tattoo was the distinction. People mark themselves with their tattoos. ALMA 55:8-9. A search had to be done. It was not obvious by skin color to distinguish Nephites from Lamanites. Then, Laman had to tell them that he was a Lamanite. And those with him were not obviously seen as Nephites. Lamanites could not tell skin color of Nephites. Substitution trio of same meanings: 2 Nephi 26:33. Alma 1:30, Alma 11:44 These are idioms! These three phrases are interchangeable:1. Black or white. 2. in or out of the church, and, 3. wicked or righteous. These three interchangeable phrases explain the idiom! Skin color is a great blessing given by God to help regulate sun exposure for health in sunny places (dark brown) and to regulate more vitamin D3 production in less sunny places by (lightest brown) Lehi’s people were dark when they left Jerusalem, as natives from Middle East, and descendants of Joseph and the Egyptian princess Asenath. Possibly even darker than other Hebrews. How many generations of Joseph’s male descendants married beautiful Egyptian princesses? How did this affect the gene pool of the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim? D&C 4:5 qualifications for priesthood D&C 36:4-5 all to receive priesthood D&C 63:57 D&C 121:21-23, 24 persecutors to not hold priesthood but will be forgiven if they repent. There were African Americans who held the priesthood during most if not all of the priesthood ban timeline.
