The 1st Burning Man

The Burning Man of today evolved originally from an annual art party hosted by Mary Grauberger. Taking place on or around the summer solstice on San Francisco's Baker Beach prior to 1986, the art parties had sculpture burning as a central theme. Then in 1986 Larry Harvey, inspired in part by Mary Grauberger's events, asked his friend Jerry James to help him build an 8' effigy to be burned on Baker beach. This event, unnamed at this point, continued annually until 1990 when, the effigy having grown to 40', the police pulled the plug on the parties climactic burn. Meanwhile, Kevin Evans and John Law, of the Cacophony Society, were planning a similar event called Zone Trip #4 - A Bad Day at Black Rock in Nevada's Black Rock Dessert. Harvey and friends, having nowhere to burn the 40' effigy, joined forces with the Zone Trip #4 group and this was the birth of what we now know as Burning Man. The following clip contains footage of an earlier burn at Baker Beach and also the first burn to take place on the Playa.

Exactly! I just went for the first time this year and the whole time I was there I just kept imagining the desert being so empty and thinking of how it had been there looong before I ever knew about it. Its a trip to think of how many hours people have already spent in that desert and how many structures have been burnt, how many people's lives changed, how many people have died since going there Ect...... It to me, is truly where you can find the meaning of life.

I hope to go some year. I like the concept of Burning Man and the art. It seems like a spiritual experience if you choose to go with that intention.

This is a snippet of a half hour or so film made by Larry Harvey. Camera work by Judith Iam and myself, Dan Miller. Larry inherited the hat from his father. Mary Grauberger, our mutual friend organized a simple summer solstice bonfire for a few years up till '85. In '86 larry took over calling our circle of friends and worked with Jerry James the day of the burn to sculpt the first "man" from scraps.

Cool thanks for explaining that ... do the three of you still go each year or have some of you died or stopped going ? I have never been there but would have liked to have gone in the earlier years .

This film was made 4 years later of the first year on the desert , after Baker beach. The Baker beach segments were re-enacted in 1990, the figure was a close replica. It would be cool to see the whole film again.

haha we've done this for 7 years up until this past year at beercan beach in aptos ca. (too much hard work to be hassled by the cops...20-40ft fires an all day set up...months of planning...hell of a time always impressed the firemen and the cops were always pissed...but this year 5 out of 40 of the original planners are taking our legacy to burning man to start a new adventure...hopefully we get those other 35 over the course of the next 2 years...soooo stoked

I used to live in San Franciso 1982-1985, and I'd occasionally drive by Baker Beach and observe the statues. A couple of years ago, I was looking at some Burning Man photos and thought hey, that kind of looks like the art at Baker Beach; and looked it up. Amazing how the event has grown over the years. I also wonder why I haven't seen any other small, grass roots arts events like the original BB exercise

This video was all filmed and created in 1990. Nothing in this film was actually filmed in 1986. The footage from the beach (Baker beach) in San Francisco is a remake of the 1986 first burn, not the real one. It's easy to see since the Man didn't look like that but especially because Larry wasn't wearing a hat (1:12) back in 1986. He was told to do so later by Michael Mikel who he only met in 1988. The force that continues on. I still wonder about the universe, and how it seems to be completely true that entropy hits everything and yet there is still life. Entropy would be all about burning everything down, but the work and the play merge somehow and things get built - life seems almost a paradox, built out of billion year old carbon. Especially if you like it crispy.

WICKER MAN (1973) was the inspiration, one of the original midnight movies that everybody saw, like Eraserhead and Rocky Horror. Borrowing from that vision isn't shameful but, pretending to be the original source of inspiration without crediting is lame.

At this point i kinda hope Black Rock City ends and Burning Man can go back to its roots as a movement. So much MOOP and all of them are boasting how little MOOP there is. No principles at all, assaulting climate protesters. I wouldnt be surprised if the regional burns disavow Black Rock at this point.
