Welcome to the video about The 20 Worst Muscle Cars Ever Made
54. This video countdown reveals the 20 biggest fails and flops in American muscle car history. Get ready to see the worst performers, tackiest designs, and most regrettable muscle cars ever unleashed on the public. From failed experiments like the woefully underpowered AMC Marlin to design disasters like the awkward Plymouth Volare Road Runner, this video pulls no punches covering the most embarrassing muscle cars Detroit ever built. You’ll learn the troubled backstory behind each disappointing machine that gave muscle cars a bad name. These questionable cars totally lacked the qualities that define great classic muscle - big power, aggressive looks, and street swagger. Relive painful memories of muscle car failures like the misguided Pontiac GTO, the miserable Mustang II, and the dreadful Dodge Demon. So join us as we drag Detroit’s skeletons out of the closet and take a look at the dark side of American muscle car history through the 20 worst examples to ever wear a V8 badge.
In the thumbnail image, I have created a more beautiful version of the 1978 FORD MUSTANG KING COBRA car. If it does not appear in the video, I hope you will sympathize and accept my video.

The original twoseat AMX (1968 - 1970) was a superb car. The second gen was a lightly modded Javelin, still a good car. The later Hornet and Spirit AMX cars lost a lot, but were still decent cars. And the Gremlin was a good car, lasting on the streets far longer than the Vegas and Pintos.

A lot of these crappy cars came during the well-documented doldrums of the mid-70s, through the 1980s. Detroit had a hard time adjusting to the CAFE standards, lowering compression, choking the engine with smog equipment, etc.

I'm not sure where they are getting this information from, but there are quite a few mistakes. The 1982 Trans AM was not available with a 2.5L L4. The standard engine for the Trans Am was a 305 CID V8. You had to drop down to the base Firebird for the 2.5L. The T/A was also available with a 4 speed manual in 1982 and the 1983 model offered a 5 speed with the 190hp rated 305.

@@Project_Low_Expectations I have seen quite a few of the 4.9 turbo Gen 2s and they never appealed to me. I had the 83 T/A with the 305 5 speed manual (rated at 175 hp I believe. Easily beaten by a v6 Mercury Capri). It handled well, but was let down by the weak 305 and you couldn't add a lot of torque to the T top models without risking torqueing the chassis. Would love to see one of the 3.8 turbo powered 89s. I thought people were screwing with me.

The 70's and 80's were a bad time for cars. My wife had a '76 mustang II with a 2.3-liter 4 cylinder with 88 horsepower, which was cute, but it couldn't get out of its own way. A while back I owned a 1984 Corvette with a 350 which was only rated at 205HP. I now have a 2023 Cadillac CT5 with a 2-liter engine which is rated at 237HP and gets 32 mpg on the highway. Inspite of the Mustang 2s low performance, it was a Lite car, but I know people who have taken it stock and put 411 rear gear in it and headers and a 4 barrel carb and got it into the 12s in the quarter, where most of the muscle cars were running 14s in the quarter,

You would need a lot more than 411s, headers and a 4 barrel carb to get that car in the 12s. The car weighs 2800 pounds. To run a 12.8 at 112 mph would require about 300 hp at the flywheel. You ain't gettin that with headers and a barrel holley.

I have to disagree about the '74 GTO. I know it's not fast. So now that I think about it, it does qualify as a bad muscle car. But I've always had a thing for Novas as well as Pontiacs so the '74 GTO looks like a Pontiac Nova which to me is weird and wonderful. A Nova with a shaker hood scoop and Trans Am exhaust tips as well as a Pontiac front end? From the factory? That's amazing.

The 74 GTO was a Ventura ( Nova) with a 350 and a shaker. Looking back compared with the competition , it wasn't that bad 74 sucked. The Trans AM and formula firebird was about the best you could do at the time. The Camaro only had a 350, Ford Mustang in 74 didn't have an 8. So a grabber Maverick or heavier Gran Torino was it. Chrysler motors had the last of the very weakened Challengers, Chargers and Cuda's. The Pontiacs were as good as you could get.

One thing no one takes into consideration is that in the early 70s the advertised measurement of horsepower went from gross to net. There was suddenly as much of a 60-100 horse power reduction on paper. Net measurements were taken with all the smog and accessories hooked up plus exhaust and air cleaners. Consider how many manufacturers in the late. 60s through 71 under-reported the horse power to keep the insurance companies at bay. I had a stick 71 Cougar with the H-code. 351C. In. 71 it was rated for 250 horses. For 72-73, it dropped to 160 or so. Surprisingly torque figures didn’t change that much.

I had seen the phrase, “his men follow him out of curiosity” offered in Army evaluation reports. I watched this video for the same reason. I hope the AI used to generate this video is not the same that our current DoD would be using (although there seem to be indications …). How the 68-70 Tempest or the original AMXs got included among the 20 worst is amazing. Then there will be those new to cars that think the Aspen-Volaries based RoadRunner looks like a 67-68. A forgotten detail is that Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers (and Cudas), and AMXs were “pony cars,” not muscle cars. Traditional muscle cars are midsized with big motors. I can’t argue that most of the cars featured were not great performers in their day, but most of the cars featured were modified. Some kid’s going to see a 383 stroker in a Mid 80s Camaro and think it’s an Iron Duke. And FWD is not a performance badge, it simply stands for “front wheel drive.” Every Citation, even the base models were “FWD.”

Right, the 6.6 Liter 1966' GTO had a wheelbase of 116" and considered a muscle car. The 1966 Ford 7 Litre Galaxie at 119" with 427 (R) code was not. The definition was midsize, not fullsize, even if some fullsize jobs were not that much bigger.

First, lose the AI. It really can't interpret 1980 correctly, for instance. Nineteen hundred and 80? Really? It also mentioned KYTT as the name of the car, when it was KITT. There are other examples, but these really stuck out to me. Also, the Gremlin was mentioned twice. I did learn that the GTO was once a trim line for the Tempest, and that the GTO also came in a wagon, which surprised me. Other than these quibbles, I enjoyed the video, and I appreciate the time you took to put this together. Thanks!
