The numbers determined that they should be a losing team. But with zero expectations, a completely average roster, and a little bit of luck, the 2007 Diamondbacks were the top team in the National League. How?

@@Patrick61804 Yep, 87 Vikings made the NFC Championship Game after a pair of upsets of New Orleans and in particular San Fran. That team would prove to be capable of putting together a very solid statistical year in 1988 before the Herschel Walker trade, and would proceed to lose to San Fran in both 88 and 89.

Why didn't the Dbacks really follow this 2007 appearance up with good teams? 2009. Right when the young players shown in this vid were starting to come into their own it fell apart. It was incredible how much went wrong for the Dbacks in 2009: -Brandon Webb gets pulled on Opening Day with "shoulder tightness" and never pitches in the majors again. -In an attempt to replace Webb, the Dbacks traded away Max Scherzer in a vain attempt to get another Ace (Ian Kennedy) -Conor Jackson, the 27 year-old 1B who hit .300 in '08, contracted Valley Fever and never fully recovered. The postseason 2011 Dbacks's 1B combine to hit .235 (Thank God for Grand-Slam Goldschmidt) -Eric Byrnes breaks his hand and (besides a hilarious comeback attempt with the Mariners) his career is over. -Jarrod Parker, AZs #1 prospect goes through Tommy John surgery and never pitches for the Dbacks. -Diamondbacks had FIVE FIRST ROUND PICKS in the '09 draft, and only got AJ Pollock out of those five, missing out on players like Trout, Arenado, Kipnis, Corbin, Seager, LeMahieu, Matz, and Marisnick. (Thank God for 8th Rounder Goldschmidt) -Dbacks fire Bob Melvin, one of the best managers of the past decade to go with unproven AJ Hinch - who himself gets fired halfway through 2010.

0:27 the DBacks and Rockies didn’t have the same regular season win total. Arizona ended at 90-72 and Colorado ended at 89-73, same as the Padres. The Rockies only won 90 games because the game 163 they won was added on. Arizona won the division alone by one game. It had nothing to do with head to head.

God imagine how weak the NL in a year has to be for a 90 win team with a negative run differential be the #1 seed. The 2021 Mariners were also a 90 win team with a negative run differential that punched above their weight and yet were two games out of a playoff spot EVEN WITH an expanded playoff roster (5 vs 4 teams per league)
@antonioreconquistador
@antonioreconquistador Жыл бұрын
Mid 2000s baseball was really weird but definitely entertaining. A lot of the steroid era stars were retiring or at the end of their rope, and a lot of steroid benefactors that were able to keep their act together dominated on piecemeal teams that were very streaky but often entertained in the playoff and wild card race. Rising stars and consistent pitchers and hitters would continue to make their mark going into the similarly but less tumultuous 2010s. The top dogs in the nl east and nl central battled so many injuries and prolapses and departures that they weren't able to stay comfortably afloat above 90 wins more often than not.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 Жыл бұрын
@@antonioreconquistador Yep, and the 2007 season might be the most "down" part of that period, and 06 isn't exactly far behind either. Come to think of it, we got eight different teams in the World Series from 2005-2008: Chicago and Houston, Detroit and St. Louis, Boston and Colorado, and Tampa Bay and Philadelphia. A further six teams also made an LCS in that four year window: Anaheim, Oakland, the Mets, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Arizona. So 14 teams making an LCS in a four year span (out of 16 possible spots given four teams go that far per year). I don't know of any other period in MLB history where we see that kind of parity.

It really shows the importance of situational hitting and being clutch on the diamond whether it's getting a big hit with RISP late in the game or making a great game saving catch or a big pitch when you're in a jam. Numbers alone don't tell us everything about the game. Perhaps that team gelled well together and had chemistry and a clubhouse leader. They certainly had a good mix of veterans and rookies. Whatever the case, I'm glad the game is played on the field, not on paper or computers!

It's surprising and frankly disappointing that you don't mention the team defence of the '07 D-backs even once in this video. They ranked 3rd in the NL in Total Zone Runs Above Avg., 2nd in Defensive Runs Saved Above Avg., and 8th in Defensive Efficiency. According to the Plus/Minus System, the D-backs had the 3rd best defence in the NL. Without such stellar team defence, there's no way the '07 team would have won all those 1-run games, and in my mind it was their gloves that pushed this team from average to competitive. It's quite a shame that none of this was never mentioned.

The real reason nobody remembers them though is that nobody really remembers the Rockies too. Them getting absolutely crushed in the World Series really ruined any talk. The narrative going into the postseason was that the AL was significantly better than the NL and the fact that that bore out to be true really ruins the cinderella stories from the NLWest.

Good video. Dodgers underachieved that year and the Cubs choked in the first round as usual.

It's crazy this Dbacks team was the first seed in the NL. They've had other teams with better talent that disappointed badly.

I wonder how many baserunning runs they had. The team had a lot of speed.

I wouldn't say blowouts skew the the Pythagorean Win % Metric. Really good/talented ((or bad/replacement level)) teams win ((or lose)) by big margins often enough.
