The 2017 MLB Trade Deadline Was NUTS

Dodger blockbusters. The White Sox fleece their crosstown rival. Teoscar to Toronto. AZ gets their 2nd half slugger. Post deadline moves too? The 2017 deadline was crazy, and its effects still linger five years later.

The whole "don't prospect hug" thing fails to recognize the guys who teams refused to part ways with. Houston's "quiet" deadline failed to get Sonny Gray or Yu Darvish mainly because they refused to part ways with guys like Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez. Instead, they found a more cost efficient option in Verlander (who clearly turned out to also be the best option by far). The Dodgers also consistently refuse to empty the farm despite being a big market team that can afford to pay a ton of superstars. Calhoun was the top guy they traded, but refused to leverage Verdugo, Beuhler, and Lux. The takeaway shouldn't be "always trade your prospects" nor should it be "never trade your prospects"; rather, it should be "treat your prospects like the assets they truly are." If the Dodgers were going to give up a guy like Verdugo or Keibert Ruiz in a deal, they better be getting guys like Mookie Betts, Max Scherzer, and Trea Turner. Fans want to trade guys just to trade guys, but the minor league players that you don't know about often have equal value to the Major League players you know. It's not biased "prospect hugging", it's part of the business.
@MustacheDLuffy
@MustacheDLuffy 2 жыл бұрын
Prospect hugging are teams that are reluctant to trade for players without giving up anything of value in return. Some prospects are backlogged and won’t have a starting role on the team and at some point you’ll have to trade players like that. Prospects can also get hurt or fail in the majors so they aren’t as guaranteed as MLB ready players.

This is REALLY well said. I'll tip my cap to you. As an aside, the thing that really got me into baseball was a simulator called Out of the Park. You can either be a Manager or a GM, but not actually play as the players. Given your understanding of how trades work, you seem like someone who would love it.

JD Martinez was so damn good 2017-2019. One of the best second half acquisitions with 29 Home runs in 62 games for AZ and whats crazy is he was one of the last free agents to sign before the 2018 season going on to hit 43 home runs ,130 rbis and become a key member for one of the best championship teams in mlb history.

Just have to point out, the real reason Sonny Gray struggled in NY is because the Yankees had him using his terrible 4-seam fastball in a homer-friendly ballpark. That thing got demolished in NY, and the other changes to his pitch mix were also bad. Notably, as soon as he ended up with the Reds, his pitch mix went back to his prior standards and he became solid again.

The Gray deal I had some optimism, but the Donaldson deal was a bad trade at the time too. Here’s to hoping for better success rate from the Olson, Chapman, Bassitt, Manaea and soon to be Montas trades.

Completely missed the best trade of that year when a 60-51 Cleveland team gave the Mets a prospect no one's heard of in Ryder Ryan for a month and a half of Jay Bruce after Lonnie Chisenhall was declared out for the season in Right Field. Two weeks after that Cleveland was 69-56, Three weeks and a Jay Bruce walkoff after that they were 91-56. At seasons end Cleveland was 102-60 and in possession of Homefield advantage for the postseason (which they promptly Blew). Cleveland was 42-9 with Jay Bruce in that lineup for 43 of their final 51 games...I've never seen a team respond so well to 1 addition like the Tribe did that year.

I hate the “don’t prospect hug” argument. No one prospect hugs. Owners clearly invest in minor league talent because not only is that the future of the organization, but they are all assets. It’s super shortsighted to ignore that. There’s minor leaguers right now that have more value than 70% of the league. Free agency and trades are there to round out/compliment your roster. But at the end of the day- your core is homegrown and they’re the ones that decide if you’re chip contenders.
