I've seen a lot of people drive a lot of cars, and have owned a TON of fast (400-500 HP+) cars myself. The Golf R looks like you can chuck it hard without worrying about falling off the cliff, drive it ALL year round, all conditions AND take your kids and wife and luggage. This is a total winner. The last R didnt have the rotation this has and while I LOVE manuals (all my cars have been sticks), this DSG is frikkin fast and optimized for this car clearly. I'll wait for them to fix the infortainment (which I bet is coming soon), ideally release a few cool colors (although I like the blue) and put an order in. Wow. Barely depreciates out here in the Pacific NW.

Some corrections. Special/Nurburgring mode actually softens the suspension compared to race mode to better absorb bumps/dips found on the Nurburgring. Also, I'm pretty sure the E-LSD is only available on the GTI. The R has an open diff in the front and the torque vectoring diff in the rear. I don't think theres enough space to fit the LSD and the AWD bevel box in the same engine bay haha

I took delivery of my mk8 R a couple days ago. For ESC you can set a shortcut where all you have to do is swipe down from the top then push the "ESC OFF" button and boom. Swipe, tap. The transmission stays in manual mode if you tap it into sport first before shift up or down with the paddle. As you mentioned the Race mode, Drift, and Special do that automatically so it doesn't turn off. If you're in sport or comfort you can achieve the same thing by tapping the gear selector back towards you to enter "S" automatic transmission then tap the paddles.

Excellent POV of this vehicle. The Golf R is a strong competitor in the arena but indisputably the original incarnation of the "Hot Hatch". I've owned VW products for some time and while I drive an ID.4 now, I sure miss my GTi. I don't have any problems with the UI system. Ditching the NAV tile on the second screen menu really picks up the speed and I actually like the capacitive HVAC controls the first time I used them but haven't since because I just set the temp to "AUTO" and use the steering wheel audio controls to adjust volume. Really really crisp camera and superb audio. Great review. Keep up the great work. Glad I found this channel.

Though the driving experience is different, the fact is that the Golf R competes in the hot hatch class, so comparisons against the CTR and Veloster N are natural. Unfortunately, as a reviewer, you follow suit and point out the annoyances of the infotainment but 100% that is because most reviewers have it for a couple of days or a week at most. But you exaggerate some of your points so annoyingly, it negates the quality of the review at times. But, VW claimed 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and using Nürburgring mode actually softens the suspension compared to using just the Race mode.

Took the 290hp one for a test drive 2yrs ago. It handled like a pregnant yak & the DST, when not in sport mode, took so long to get into gear, it felt like you'd need a reservation. The AWD system is barely adequate & is no fun whatsoever on gravel, dirt or snow. It was a bit restrictive to see out of since the dash is positioned so high. Only a couple of color selections available, some interior appointments are a bit "mom & dad pretending to be cool", like tacky carbon fiber, BUT: Everything else, it was tops in its class. It's almost luxurious & looks & feels like what you pay for. It sounds really good. The paddle shifting is superb. And it should be, this car is NOT cheap. It's good to see they finally started putting in some industry-leading power, putting the Subaru WRX powertrain into a well-deserved trashcan. That said, the WRX handles a LOT better. Night and day. Unless it's a huge improvement from the last R was released, the handling is very soggy.

The new Golf R, on the outside, visually looks wonderful, but, and its a big but, the interior is not worth the money in the slightest, it costs almost $50k for a Golf and a distinctly cheap interior. For the money, a Jetta GLI with a simple tune could produce the same power, the ea888 engine is definitely a solid one for the Golf and Jetta range, but for the money this car is not worth it. The interior feels cheap, too much plastic, and overall thoroughly meh in its segment. New Camry costs $5-7k less and is just better in everything and doesn’t feel cheap. If you can spend the money to get this, just get an Audi S3, because it’s infinitely more worth it for the money. The UI in this car is terrible and gets to be really annoying after a while. I had mine for 7 months, put about 4,000 miles on it, and then got rid of it for an S3. Cost-cutting is for sure something that comes to mind when thinking about this car
