Happy Weds everyone! Hope your week is off to a great start! We just wanted to clarify, we filmed this review last month before we had more information on the battery mineral requirements that took effect after 4/18 and it has been confirmed that the 2023 ID4 still qualifies for the full $7,500 federal tax credit! That makes it one of the few electric vehicles that does and makes model very enticing for buyers looking to go electric on a budget.

I’ve owned three EVs now including this exact EV reviewed in this video, and I have to ask: am I the only one that’s never once asked about or desired a frunk in the slightest? Why do EV reviewers keep tsk tsking auto makers for not including a frunk? I think VW made exactly the right choice here in shortening to nose to expand cabin space and not spending a bunch of money miniaturizing things unnecessarily to make space for a frunk.

I think frunks are throughly overrated unless it’s a truck. The ID.4 has more interior volume, 130 cu feet than the Mach-E, which has 129 cu feet including the frunk, and the ID.4 almost 6 inches shorter than the Mach-E. I’d much rather have more interior room in a smaller package than a frunk id almost never use.

I actually like the look because it looks like a normal car that blends in with all the other normal cars and I'm not interested in driving around in something that looks like a spaceship. Also if I can offer a bit of constructive criticism and this isn't just about you but all auto reviewers who test out these EVs, please stop criticizing 0-60 times that aren't 3 seconds. A 6 second 0-60 is EXTREMELY good in a world where a lot of it's ice competitors in the compact SUV space have 0-60 times between 8 to 10 seconds. I feel like 99.99% of people only care if it's fast enough to merge on a highway without feeling like that simitruck is going to run through you because on Texas highways the onramps are so short. I actually just bought an ID4 & I absolutely love the way it drives. I currently live in Northern Virginia and there are a crap ton of windy roads & that low center of gravity those turns feel a lot smoother than my previous car. My only real complaints are with some of the tech but it's things I can easily live with. I will be keeping my eye out on the upcoming Blazer though so I will see if I decide to keep the ID4 or not.
@Charlesbjtown

Exactly this. It's almost like anything slower than a plaid model s, is dangerously slow. We have a Pro model, and it's plenty for everyday driving. My bolt is definitely more peppy, but who needs a fast SUV??
@billhurt3644
@billhurt3644 Жыл бұрын
I love to drive fast, I go to autocross meets and race cars, and the ID4 is plenty plenty fast enough to feel sporty and alive when driving in public roads. And if your coming from either a less expensive ev or most ICE cars this thing is going to feel very quick. I agree with you very much that you just don’t need sub 4 second 0-60 times to be considered good just because a bunch of $90k+ EVs on the road do it.

In the EV world almost ALL vehicles get the instant torque so get up and go is really never a problem- then kind of act like diesels where they give it up and higher speeds. My wife has an EV Mini Cooper that is stated 0-60 at 6.8 seconds. Let me tell you, flooring that thing will chirp the rear wheels and it is FAST off the line and even midrange 40-50 mph. I am looking at the AWD all wheel drive model and it has the same initial EV quickness and is all around perfect for everyday. Yes I like physical buttons and wish that it had those for HVAC and even radio- but VW is not the only one that are eliminating physical buttons. But did you see that BMW said they are absolutely adding physical buttons on future EVs as their feedback from customers is not only do they want physical buttons- but the scroll wheel as well. Together with a touchscreen, all 3 of those make for a perfect interface. Oh and with the aluminum trim and new 20" wheels I actually love the look of this model. 2024 will even be better but some really good deals on the 23 models.

Regarding range, I have the 2023 RWD ID4 Pro, and I'm pleasantly surprised by the range. It's EPA rated at 275 miles, and I'm matching it in winter and exceeding it in summer. My summer range is over 300 miles, typically around 325 miles. Climate where I live (Pacific Northwest) is relatively mild, 30 F to 50 F in winter and 65 F to 85 F in summer. I drive at the speed limit and accelerate and decelerate smoothly. I drive in Eco mode, which actually makes little difference.

Random thoughts from a current 22 Pro S owner built in Germany. Interior: Pros: Mostly nice materials: Seats are very comfortable on long drives esp if you have the massage feature; heated seats; Panoramic roof with rolling shade is nice. Cons: Piano black trim; non ventilated seats; 2 button window controls; haptic buttons; Horrible software updates. Currently v3.1 on US vehicles. V3.2 available in Europe with plug and play updates; VW app is also horrible. You cannot lock and unlock doors or schedule; Wireless AA and Car Play works. Can play youtube with Carstream app but not Netflix. Exterior: Pros: Headlights turn with the wheel; There's some debate as to whether the vehicles have the hardware already for matrix headlights and just waiting for dot approval and software updates but who knows; low drag coefficient of .28. Cons: 23 models removed the front tow hook eyelet. No 360 camera in US. Performance: All evs will have lower rated mileage in the winter. With the 82kw battery you can achieve over 300 if you drive sensibly with a full charge; No battery preconditioning; No heat pump; acceleration is meh; charge rate 125kwh (21-22 models) and 135kwh (23 models) still way behind Tesla and Hyundai/Kia but ahead of Ford; turning radius is amazing. Driver assist features are nice and included as standard Other considerations: Maintenance is lower since its an EV but expect to replace tires much sooner due to the weight of the vehicle and narrowness of the tire; no full spare just fix a flat (You can buy one from modernspare or a 19" spare VW Atlas one off Ebay (same center bore); 22-23 models free 3 years (30min) fee dc charging at Electrify America. US built will qualify for $7500 Fed Tax credit.

II have had my Aurora Red 2023 ID 4 Pro s since late Jan. have already put 5K on it. Charges very easily in my garage at 36to 38 miles per hr. Can drive down my long driveway back up into my garage HANDS FREE. Has probably one of the best turning radius then any other EV manufacturer out there. Does come with a haptic sun cover for those hot CA days. Not as fast as a Tesla Y but can scoot very quickly. Very Very well built. Heating and Cooling system amazingly well done. Info screen responsive and very easy to use. In the 3rd year out VW has a real winner and Looking forward to the ID BUZZ hopefully this year.

I have test driven several EVs over the past few months including the ID4. It doesn't knock your socks off but I would buy one for the price (especially used). Personally, I don't understand the fascination/obsession with acceleration and range. When are you going to the need that much acceleration from a Tesla M3/MY or Mustang Mach E? In what situations? You didn't have it before so why worry about it now? I live in a pretty crowded area so it's not like I can floor it all day long. I don't need it. As far as range, the overwhelming majority of American's daily commutes are less than 30 miles. Even if it's 50 or even 100 miles, at the end of the day you come home and can charge it over night. That will suit a pretty high % of Americans. If it doesn't suit you for whatever reason, fine, stick with an ICE vehicle. No one is holding a gun to your head to buy an EV. Check back in 5-7 years and there may be better options

It's under powered as well. Now they are already showing a much more powerful motor on the ID7. You know that's going on the ID4 in the MY 2024. Why buy one now?

I don’t know why you care reviewers are so stuck up on some certain things. Having a frunk may provide more storage but who’s actually going to use it on a daily basis. It not as convenient. Another thing is the infotainment on the id4. It most definitely not the best out there but for the average consumer it will do its job. The climate controls aren’t a problem at all. It takes some getting used to but when you do you won’t even see it as an issue. The heated seats are integrated into the system however there is a shortcut using the sliders to turn them on. If car reviewers were seeing the perspective of the id4 from the average customer I’m sure these reviews would be more positive.

#1 I don't think this car looks anything like a minivan, and those SUV's that have a sharp taper off on the rear don't carry squat. #2 give it a rest with making such a big deal out of having to push one extra button to roll down the rear windows, most people don't roll down the rear windows that often and pushing a button isn't the end of the world. #3 ventilated seats? at this price point?? My nissan has distinctively different buttons for the front and rear windows. I can tell from touch alone what window I am opening.

It's special in the sense that most use eco-tires, which reduces rolling resistance, but you can still put regular tires on them. You'll just get a bit less range. Aside from Tesla, which has their own foam filled tires.

Drum breaks ... they went with the breaks that give you less stopping power when its wet outside... Dumb Breaks... in a heavy car with only the front breaks to stop you....and the rear barely working... I think they placed them on there to have you in the dealer shop more often when the car breaks none stop over the months of ownership...NICE... LOL
@nothere572
@nothere572 Жыл бұрын
VW went with rear drum brakes because brakes are used less in a ev, especially the rear ones since the regen is on the rear motors primarily. Drum brakes last longer with less use, meaning less maintenance. Braking performance is not affected at all.

Looks good enough on the outside (no weird designs like the Hyundai/Kias), but the interior are cold and industrial. Like a theme park rides, not a personal vehicles. Lots of cheapness within touch and eye distance. It should be just the opposite: keep the cheap stuff down low and out of reach. One other flaw is driving range. Until EV can reach a minimum of 300mi I wouldn't even consider them. With all its compromises, there's no way its worth 50 grand. Note even close.
