I was in the same boat for about 4 years. My friend was desperately trying to get me to finish an army and would suggest different ways to paint them faster to a good standard but I always ignored him and thought "it takes as long as it takes, I'm not looking for shortcuts". Then one day it clicked. I was playing just a small 800 point game against him and I looked at both our models and despite mine being to a much higher standard and way beyond table top ready, the quallity between mine and his from table top range wasn't even noticable. This is when I realised the futility of painting a display quallity model for table top. No one can even notice unless they're holding them up to their face and you'll likely just get a "looks good" at best for all your effort. I still enjoy taking my time with models outside of my 2k point army but now at least I have an army to play with. The faster model looks great!

Your post describes exactly how I feel, yet I can't bring myself to not be a little bit perfectionist ^^'

Have you ever tried panel lining with oil washes? You give those guys a quick gloss varnish, and then pin wash with your thin oil paint just into the recesses and it takes minutes. Not hours, minutes. They take so long to dry, It’s very easy to clean up anything. And then once they dry, you just hit it with the Matt varnish. You could even do an all over oil wash and remove most of it from the broad panels to get free weathering also

So... HOW did you made them? Whats the scheme, what paints did you use?

Drybrushing a brighter silver would be my first thought, if it's too dark.

The Guardians of the Covenant are my favorite chapter. I'm painting my scout kill team as these dudes and I'm using a black Templar neophyte body with a hooded head for the sergeant.

I definitely can relate. Everytime I tell myself I’m going to cut corners I usually end up just going all out again. I try to designate armies to be certain painting levels and establish a scheme that I have to stick to.

I have a friend that ends up doing most of his army at once, but in steps. He gets simple basecoats on everything first. Then he does the weapons in one phase, then he'll do leather pouches in one phase, then he'll do the cloaks, etc. Then he'll do edge highlighting. So he gets his army on the table quickly and refines it over time. Personally I like to do one squad at a time, but I present it as an option for getting on the table in a few days.

Great video. Nice marine. The finish on your paint jobs I've noticed are always INCREDIBLY smooth and considering the camera you are using, you see almost ZERO flaws, (i didn't notice a single flaw to be honest) because they get picked up so quickly in front of a good lens. I'm really impressed. I started painting 6 months ago and my finishes have come a long way and there is still a lot of room for improvement.... thank you for this.

That's so clean and good looking paintjob!

The colour scheme, and the hooded head, scream stealth (I was thinking about doing a whole phobos unit with hoods). I love it.

I've been going through the same motions for quite some time now. That's why I subscribed. :) All I can say is... continue forcing yourself to paint like that, even if only occasionally. It's worth it to free yourself from these chains! :D I tend to paint almost exclusively like this nowadays (or alternatively with Streaking Grime, Slapchop methods etc), because life is really killing my hobbytime and although my perfectionist head is trying to pull me back to my previous unhappy state of mind (as is the case with yours, I see), I can now get things done and I am happy about them in the end. And every now and then I indulge in a very small "perfectionist" project, like a Blitz Bowl team or something. Interestingly enough, it was also Darren's Silver Skulls that pushed me to also paint some in that style. My mind always tries to push me to start something new, but this time "painted properly"... but I am staying strong. Getting things onto the table is always more satisfying than that one mini you painted to the best of your ability only to then get bogged down. PS: The mini is not too dark! It's dark, yes, but it looks awesome for a grimdark setting!

My silver marines started as a kill team. The scheme was so quick that I ended up with a small army of them.

Are you the Doom Eagle guy? love that scheme, I wish you could still get old nuln oil and gloss to make that magic mix.
@davidhardy8752 ай бұрын
Yes I’m that guy. I’m sure the new formula Nuln would work. basilicanum grey also works as a good substitute. I’m sure Darren Latham said he’s done it that way before

So for your blood angels scheme what about gloss varnishing the whole thing before your transfers then hitting it with a blue oil step and immediate wipe off with a sponge then giving it a half hour to get touch dry or hitting it with a hair dryer and doing an orange drybrush and a matt varnish?

I have some advice. Firstly, you're psyching yourself out, when you're analyzing the model like that. The only way you can really tell if you'd like the scheme, is by painting 10 or more models. That way you can test, wether the task really is that daunting, and a finished squad will always look 10× better, than a single model. If you keep picking up a model, you will always see tiny things that you can improve... Things that you don't even notice at a distance. Paint a squad/box, have it in front of you and look at them, without picking them up. It's so motivating to finish that first box. Another tip, from a fellow perfectionist, and this is probably the single best army painting tip... (Got it from multiple golden demon winner and army painter: Andy Wardle originally) You can always finish the first 500-1000 points, and then go back in and fix minor details or change stuff later. I have painted 1000 points of Stormcast, and then i went back several times afterwards and added that extra highlight, some blending and stuff like that. It feels so much easier, when the army is partly finished, to then go back and do some highlights... You get the satisfaction of being a perfectionist, but it's not a daunting task when the model is already finished and you only need to do some touch ups. Try that... Do a squad and say to yourself, when i have the first 500 points, then i can do some touch ups... Your army is still done, but you just keep making it more beautiful over time. It doesn't have to be a one-and-done process. If every model have to be perfect before putting the brush down, you will never feel the satisfaction of finishing that army...

I think they look great, I'm slowly gotten better with understanding how to apply washes but I do remember just how much bel-grey contrast darkens armour down. Maybe an even more thinned mix or a brighter silver base coat might help there? Darren is awesome he even responded to my question about the wash on an Instagram post but said it was just straight-up contrast which i cannot achieve somehow haha when I tried it the armour was so dark it looked more like metallic iron hands armour.

Absolutely love this. I've just primes azreal in leadbealcher with this process in mind. I simply don't have time to spend 10 hours on a mini. Id like to play some time in my life haha

I struggle with perfect spells as well. I've been painting my army nearly every day since 2021 and I'm done with...maybe 1500 points? Probably less. It drives me insane...

Oh boy, Guardians of the Covenant are the actual warrior monks of the space marines. They spend all their time not training or in battle copying and illuminating documents for posterity, like many orders of medieval monks did. Bad part is their script work carries over to their armor and , in lore, they cover every bloody bare surface with writing. If you want to do silver in the same vein you should check out the Iron Knights or the even more obscure, Iron Fists, who are silver with gold arms and silver shoulder pads.

A few more of them and you could atleast have a playable Killteam. Also if you wanted to brighten them up I'd try a brighter metallic colour. Vallejo Metal Color is great if you haven't tried it

Im the same a perfectionist. I go to a painting group at the hobby shop my friends give me alot of trash talk not finishing a army.😅 but I paid good money for these models why wouldnt I try your best painting them? They just slap on some drybrush and contrast 😢 just to play. One day my army will be finished and it will be crushed by a poorly painted army but mine will be the best looking army ever to lose at the game. 😂 also i clicked on the video to figure out were did you get the spacemarine hoods? Please tell me they would be prefect for my raptors 😊
