What's riskier than buying a defective 3dfx card? Probably buying three of them! Join me as I attempt to repair three Voodoo 3 3000 cards that I bought as-is on eBay. All three cost about as much a single working one. Did I make a good investment, or am I in way over my head this time?

God I miss those days. Way back when I got my hands on a Voodoo 3 2000 for Christmas. My first ever 3D accelerator card. It was such a mind blowing experience! Years of gaming with software rendering suddenly going to glide? Oh man... such nostalgia. That Voodoo3 2000 was such a trooper too. I played with it all the way until I was playing HL Counter Strike before my friend gave me his old GeForce2 MX card. Wasn't a massive upgrade but it played Counter Strike just fine and better than the Voodoo so I was happy. I still had that card all the way up until 5 years ago when I lost everything in a house fire. Ah well... good times and good memories. Those I cant lose.

So sorry to hear about the fire! The V3 was a fantastic card. I used mine for quite a while too until I eventually upgraded to a Geforce 3 Ti200. I have many great memories of it too.

Not surprised about the dirty contacts on the 2nd card, I had a similar problem with a ASUS 370 DL slotket. I cleaned the contacts twice with ipa and it didnt work, cleaned it with contact cleaner and still didnt work, I finally grabbed a good art eraser and used it to clean the contacts and the card came to life and worked perfectly after that. An art eraser has improved many a card.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve heard of people using those art erasers with a lot of success on problematic NES cartridges in the past as well. I’ll have to give it a try sometime 👍

Congratulations on resurrecting all 3 cars! I was a VooDoo2 & VooDoo3 fan when they were new. I wasn't able to afford a VooDoo4 and before I knew it 3dfx was no more. I mourned the death of 3Dfx and right or wrong still occasionally think about what an amazing graphics landscape we would have if they had not failed. Again, congratulations on 3 working cards! I hope the other 2 found great homes!

Great imagination (plus a good luck). I remember a decade ago I saw a new/boxed Voodoo 5 for around $300, but I passed on. Why would I pay that much for a GF2 MX level.... Recently an STB black Voodoo 2 12mb, new/open box, was sold for $165.

This vid helped me bring back a Geforce2 GTS. I got that card in a box of junk. It seemed to POST fine (good beep and boot to Windows), but without a VGA signal at all, not even during POST. With an additional PCI VGA, I could see the card showing up in WinXPs device manager with the correct name, but showing error 10 "device failed to start". I saved the cards BIOS, which opened fine in a bios editor. The version shown exactly matched the stickers one on the flash rom. So I don't think it had ever been overwritten. With very little hope left, I flashed an older bios version with nvflash. And what do you know, it started working perfectly. So the cards bios data must have been damaged in a way that did not trip the bios option rom checksum verification.

That's awesome, three out of three!! I've got a 12MB Voodoo 2 with 110MHz RAM that I've tried to fix repeatedly. It's got damaged pins on the FBI chip so realistically it needs that chip removed and replaced but the pitch is so fine! It's scary.
@vswitchzero
@vswitchzero Жыл бұрын
So true! The V2’s frame buffer chip is a royal pain because of the pitch. One of my broken V2s had a ton of bent pins and straightening them out was really difficult. That particular card was really beat up when I got it. I replaced a bunch of missing components and corrected shorts on all three chips, fixed broken traces but no luck. I suspect the fbi chip needs to be replaced as well. My other 8MB V2 doesn’t detect any memory on one of the TMUs but is in good physical condition otherwise. I have more hope to get that one fixed one of these days 🙂

Out of all the video cards I've owned over the last 25+ years, my old Voodoo 3 3000 was always my favourite. Bought a working one a couple of years ago, which was a good thing as prices have jumped up a notch since then. I must resist the urge to check the version number of its bios...

I got a 3dfx Voodoo³ 3000 AGP at launch and it had a strange misprinted Unreal disc (Unreal Tournament art) and some beta UnrealEd assets on the disc. The card died months later with vertical lines in the screen… can’t recall if they were blue or red but I think it was one of those two. I RMA’d it with 3dfx and the replacement came in a full retail box with a proper Unreal disc.

I am planning to pair it with a matching black Creative Labs Blaster BX chipset slot-1 Board (m003) in a reverse sleeper build using a modern Fractal Focus-G case with 5.25" drive bays .. it would have been a huge bummer if the card didn't end up working so this bit of knowledge was clutch.

I can't remember for sure if I got the Voodoo 5500 (my memories are mixed). That original Voodoo revolutionized graphics. From Tomb Raider 1 to GL Quake, to a many other GLIDE games, it was a real revolution. I was really saddened that morning when I saw 3DFX went belly up and Nvidia got all the IP. What is SAD is that I don't even know what I did with those boards--I fear I may even have just thrown them away at some point.

Thanks for the offer of the PCI card, but will have to pass for now. It has been really hard to find the time to do repairs lately and I'm hoping to take a break from it for a bit. That said, even dead 3dfx cards have quite a bit of value these days (both for collectors and people looking to repair them). You should consider putting it up for sale. I'm sure someone would definitely be interested in it. Cheers!

Hello. I really enjoy your videos, very awesome work. I am wondering what brand desoldering gun you use? I am interested in your soldering setup. If you can point me in the right direction, I will be so grateful. Keep up the great work/videos. Thanks again.

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! My desoldering gun is the Hakko FR301 and my soldering station is the Hakko 888D. I really like Hakko products. They are not cheap but the quality is excellent. The FR301 was especially pricy, but after having used it for a few months I don’t regret the purchase at all. It’s an excellent product. Just a tip if you are looking to buy Hakko products - be sure to buy from a reputable seller. There are pretty convincing knock-offs and fakes out there. Not just for irons either, even tips and accessories. I bought mine direct from Digi-Key. Thanks again!

Thanks for your comment! Yeah, I think using hot air would probably be the safest method. There is definitely some risk cutting the capacitor cans, but in my experience it is a bit safer than trying to use an iron and bending them up or using the twist-off method. I’ve never tried this on newer more delicate hardware before though. That could definitely be a lot more risky and a different story. Thanks again for the tip.

Wow! I thought I bricked my V3 by doing a BIOS flash. I need to bust it out and see if it still works with another card in a PCI slot. TY!!!!!!!!!

Did all Voodoo 3000s have the big aluminum heatsink? Sometimes you see them with the dark small one. I wonder if those are flashed 2000s. Nice job, btw. You better go play the lottery haha.

As far as I'm aware, all the voodoo 3 3000's had this heat sink. The 2000's had the smaller black one. You're probably right about them being flashed 2000's as I had a 2000 with 5.5ns RAM and it OC'd nicely to 166mhz with no issues. I know people have removed heatsinks from the 3000 and added their own custom one with built in fan. I removed mine for troubleshooting, cleaned it up and just used thermal paste to replace the old pad/glue with no issues. I have x2 40mm fans mounted to mine.

@@sly_botts1189 about the heatsink models, the newer 2000´s used a "aluminum color" heatsink like the 3000s but on the same size of the black ones, the format of them was a bit different.

I have a defective V3 1000 that I might try to repair some day, as it’s the only 3dfx card I own and it’s a shame it doesn’t work properly It’s defective in that it does boot and install drivers, but it shows artifacting in win98se and 3d applications freeze the pc when they start, so I’m assuming vram failure
@vswitchzero
@vswitchzero Жыл бұрын
Yeah, most likely. Try to squeeze the chips while in windows to see if the artifacting changes at all. Sometimes its just a simple flaky solder joint on one of the chips. Best of luck!
