The $40 Billion Plan to Transform Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the Capitol of the United Arab Emirates and has a population of over 1.4 million people. While the capitol is the country's center of politics and industry, the government has began investing into a number of Initiatives, to transform this region. One of the largest projects being Yas Island, a large infrastructure project catering towards the tourism industry. While this was just one large scale development project, the UAE government has outlined a number of large scale projects they plan to add to this region.
All of this raises the question as to what the goal of these projects actually is. Does Abu Dhabi want to become the next Dubai, or are these projects just one step to begin diversifying the emirate's economy into new industries. But the question remains if this plan is even remotely possible, and how it will impact the future of the capitol city.

This is by far the best description of what's going on in Abu Dhabi...The same city planners designed Vancouver which was my favorite city in the world...When I'm home and visit city like Chicago, LA and New York I shake my head at how inferior the infrastructure is.... I lived here for the last nine years and watching the growth has been fascinating...They are constantly adding bike, walking paths and bus routes...On Yas Island they now have self driving taxis...

My beautiful city Abu Dhabi, Indeed Abu Dhabi development is slow and steady and it’s known for that. I remember before these projects everyone would go to Dubai at the weekends to enjoy their time but right now there’s almost nothing Dubai offers that Abu Dhabi don’t. Sustainability and walkablility has been at the forefront of its plans, but it’s public transport lacks diversity that’s why there’s plans to incorporate a metro, train, and tram transportation systems into the city

i do not see how this plan is futuristic, revolutionary, or transformational. there is still low density and single family zoning all over. you still need a car to get anywhere. the most natural way to grow a city is at a human scale not a vehicle scale.

I agree with what you're saying. In the video he keeps referring to "natural" development while talking about all the planning. That's a bit of a contradiction. Natural growth, also often referred to as organic growth, is often rather chaotic and unplanned. In that sense Dubai's growth has been much more natural than Abu Dhabi's, thus the bits of chaos. Too much planning is the enemy of natural growth and organic vibrancy--something Dubai has going for it.
@LDaz
@LDaz 2 жыл бұрын
@@brucedauphin2952 i agree with your point, look at a city like ras al khamiah, the recent growth was natrual on a groundwork of 200 years of development, it's a much more friendly city to live as a civilian in. Same with alot of cities in fujarah and Ajman, umm al qaiwan too. It's just that Dubai knly really existed as a town since the 50s and wasn't prepared for the insane growth that port rashid would generate

We've been planting millions of trees for decades, since the 80s. Dubai and Abu dhabi are deserts. The uae has somewhat walkable cities like ras al khamiah and sharjah, cities in fujarah are also generally walkable. But abu Dhabi and Dubai, the largest population centers in the country are deserts, the air is dry and heat is not retained. Extremely hot temperatures even in the winter and blistering cold temperatures at night make walkability impractical and silly
