#Egypt signed a deal with the #UAE to construct a new city on the Mediterranean coast. Critics, however, say that Egypt will trade over part of its #sovereignty.

Egypt's problem is not more money. It's learning how to manage money. People in power are going to spend this money away in no time

This tbh. For example the metro in Cairo, most tourists don’t know it exists. So cheap yes, but could at least charge non-tourists extra. They know how to spend money but not to manage it. Getting a visa or residency is complicated. Different rules for resorts and Cairo etc. Took me ages to get a visa. Do they not want my money? The banking system has potential but they try so hard to scare off investors. I would like to open a bank account in Egypt but when I got there they started check points to search people for dollars. 🤷 red flag 🚩

It is always the same in dictatorships. If you criticizes the leader, you end up in jail or killed. Therefore no one will call out dumb decisions. One of the reasons Chinas economy is hitting the wall right now. I know people often complain about capitalism. But capitalism in democratic countries is simply the superior system in the long run. Mistakes getting corrected earlier in a free market. And of course there are things to improve even in those countries, but people sure get more out of it than in dictatorships.

As someone that worked with Egyptians, that area is prime land for energy development. Plans of either solar, wind or even a nuclear power plant were considered for that region. Houthi hedge. By having a port controlled by the UAE in the Mediterranean, they can conduct deals, ship/receive goods and bypass the Hourhis shooting at anything passing the Red Sea. I also wonder if the UAE found natural gas in the Med, allowing them to ship to Southern Europe direct. If thats the case and Al-Sisi permits it, there could be very big problems. Regardless, very bold moves by the UAE. Its reminding me of the very active Italian trading states of Venice and Genoa in the late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance period.

I live in a tourist city, the problem with Egypt and their tourism is in a culture, here you can go everywhere explore what ever you want. In Egypt is a different story... There are WAY too many scams + some ppl will try to pull you into stuff that you don't want to do, and they can be aggressive. I have been only once there, and I don't want to go back. They have to change the ppl if they wanna tourism. We have a lot of Hollywood stars here, and they like it, know why? We leave em alone and treat em as regular ppl. Neil Patrick Harris is basically my neighbor for around 10y, and we only spoke few times in last let say 3 because our path are crossed, so I see him a lot. I cannot imagine ppl like him going there, all those ppl would swarm him and try to take pics this and that.

Additionally, If you do think this type of city is viable and if there are political and economic roadblocks for this type of development to take place without the assistance of the UAE, then would it not make more sense to reform Egypt’s economic and political policies and structure to allow for more economic growth and for such development to be able to occur organically?

@@lastword8783 I think Dubai occupies a pretty niche economy that to me seems pretty comparable to a city like Las Vegas - both of them develop cheap desert land into hotels, shopping malls and entertainment venues in combination with loosened restrictions on various behaviors normally not permitted in their respective cultures. It probably wouldn’t make sense if say Phoenix tried to be a copy cat city of Las Vegas, they would probably either not be able to over come Las Vegas’s first mover advantage to attract those types of tourist, or they would split that tourist market and be worse off than if they had tried to find their own economic niche to occupy. Phoenix today does have a healthy tourist market, but the people going to 5 star self improvement meditation resorts in the Mojave desert aren’t the same type of tourist that are wanting to go to Las Vegas to gamble and go to night clubs.
