IIRC from another video on the subject, the “unless you don’t” is more like “unless you either (a) do not use milk at all or (b) when in the milk is added as an actual variable in the experiment, in which case it should be clearly noted that you are deviating from the standard in the test procedure so everyone else knows you did” in the actual document

The reason I preferred this channel to others was that it was not trying to be funny forcefully, it presented things in an informative and descriptive way. Non-sarcastic, non-humorous, neutral. This video was not that...

I agree. This channel suits that approach much more than Wendover, it's nice that there are two outlets for him to make more serious long form content and shorter, less serious, but interesting and entertaining videos. I think he's come a really long way since the beginning of Wendover Productions, he's much more natural with narrating, and his jokes are genuinely funny naturally.

indeed. I just puke my guts out just thinking about it, and that's because drinking tea is an old tradition here in Romania and no one until the new (de)generations of abnormal young kids who mix all kinds of crappy and weird tastes and ingredients because they are too shallow on the inside to taste anything anymore.... but I digress... as I was saying, here in Romania drinking tea is an old tradition that has ingrained into our psyche so well that whenever we see, hear or think about the word "tea" we can already feel its taste in our mouths. And when you throw the word "milk" in anything related to tea that also forms a taste in our brains that automatically rejects the mix simply because our brains are used to the original taste of tea and corrupting this taste with milk... well, it's just bleah, so to speak. Whoever drinks tea with milk, or eats pizza with pineapple, or other abominations like these might as well hang themselves (and also do it quietly, too, because I'm not in mood to hear their cries of help)

The British approver did not read the document but probably just looked at the pictures, saw an acceptable cup of tea and approved. The French guy thought "let's be nice this time" and approved too and others blindly followed. The Irish guy thougt "what a Brit approved it! I gotta take a closer look." and actually carefully studied the proposal. As the British guy was actually no Johnson-style prime minister he did not reject his approval later, probably to avoid the burning question "what do we pay you for?"

What REALLY piss me off about standards is when I am required by law to use them, and I have to pay a third party in order to KNOW what the law requires from me. And then they "change" the standard every couple of years and you have to buy it again. And by "change" I mean they insert a comma somewhere, reword a useless sentence in a footnote and change the date in the top, because changing anything else would render the whole "standard" concept useless.

As a University student studying a science degree, I have to say, the ISO is the bane of my existence. But I also have to say why on earth is there not an ISO for plugs/ sockets and home electricity around the world. Seriously, needing a different plug to charge my shaver and toothbrush is a right pain, then if I go on holiday to the US I am expected to wait like two hours to charge my phone half way, what is this madness, everywhere needs to just use the same plug and power (preferably the UK standard unless a better alternative is available)

I think the ISO standard for home voltage and current is what's used here in Australia and New Zealand. It's 240 volts and 10 amperes. Heating, cooling, and charging is fairly time efficient. As for the plug, I have no idea what would be the best.

As a Brit I agree that the tea goes in first IF you are pouring straight from the kettle into a cup. However in this it seems to be that the tea is put in a teapot first. In that case the ISO is right to say that the milk goes in first as this is the way I was raised to do it. So I'm not sure why a Brit would be mad at this.

yea iso 3103 is a two pot guide, @3m16s it says "Prepare the liquor as described in 7.2.1 " but does not show it, "7.2.1 Preparation without milk Fill the pot containing the tea with freshly boiling water1) to within 4 to 6 mm of the brim (i.e. corresponding approximately to 285 ml in the case of the large pot and 140 ml in the case of the small pot described in the Annex) and put on the lid. Allow the tea to brew for 6 min, and then, holding the lid in place so that the infused leaf is held back, pour the liquid through the serrations into the bowl (5.2) corresponding to the pot selected. Remove and invert the lid, transfer the infused leaf to it and place the inverted lid on the empty pot to allow the infused leaf to be inspected. In the case of fine, powdery dust grades, special care should be taken and a sieve may be required."

The main reason for adding the milk first is because adding a hot liquid to an empty glass has a chance to shatter the glass/mug/whatever vessel your using. adding a colder liquid first helps absorb the heat. at least as far as i know.

I've also done research online about the history of the shipping container and this topic oddly has always interested me. Thanks for the great video. How much for the coffee recipe?

The reason you wouldn't put the milk in first is so you know how much milk you need to put in judging by the colour that the milk makes the tea. Therefore, if you have exact measurements for the volume of milk you need, the order is not important.
@IQzminus2
@IQzminus2 2 жыл бұрын
But this weird ISO also has a standardised amount of milk you should use as well. If you brew and use the large bowl specified in the ISO you have to use 5 ml of milk. And if you use the small bowl it has to be 2.5 ml of milk. It does give you the option to have milk or not. But if you use milk, then those precise measurements of milk are it.

In 2019 the ISO standard for tea was revised. It seems to make a provision for adding milk after the tea, if that is "an organisations normal practice", but I didn't pay the money for access to the standard. I do not know if Ireland now approves. Wildly, the ISO standard for tea originally came from the BSI, the British Standards Institute, which makes me ashamed of how poor our country thinks a standard cup of tea should be.
@nicstroud
@nicstroud 6 жыл бұрын
I am British and can state categorically that tea goes in the cup or mug first, then the milk which is added until the desired strength/colour is achieved. This rule is to be broken only if having tea with a vicar whereby small china cups, on saucers are used, the milk (dispensed from a milk jug) goes in first, usually far too much and you drink your milky, piss-weak tea with a pinky in the air. Feel free to disagree but bear in mind I'm right and you're wrong. Tea then milk unless with vicar.
