House & Garden

Күн бұрын

When Xa Tollemache came to live at Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, the home of her husband's family for 500 years, she knew nothing about gardens. After learning the fundamentals from Helmingham’s head gardener, she became thoroughly involved in the design and planting, and eventually launched her hugely successful career as a garden designer. Here she talks us through some of the aspects of the garden at Helmingham in midsummer, including the rose garden she planned and planted in 1982, the famous walled garden with its long borders and vegetable gardens, and the new woodland garden she laid out twenty years ago. Now that Xa and her husband have moved to a smaller house nearby, Helmingham is run by her son Edward and his wife Sophie. The gardens are open to the public throughout the summer.

Utterly stunning & peaceful. I could quite easily watch videos like this all day. I particularly love the wild flowers. Nature doing it’s magic.

What I liked about this garden is that there were several ideas that could be used in a smaller garden.

My clients who love historic properties would truly appreciate this home! I love the way perennials and annuals are cleverly mixed with fillers and foliage. No need to visit the grocer, delicious fruits and veggies are plentiful here!

Breath-taking. Beautiful gardens really feel like heaven on Earth and I'm in such admiration of good garden designers and gardeners. The discipline, the knowledge, the hard work, the sense of good judgement...absolutely stunning. Thank you for featuring Xa's truly magnificent family home.

This garden is amazing! I loved the combination of the structured beds and vegetable patches and the unstructured foliage patches. Amazing indeed. Well done

Wow, amazing gardens! I'd be really interested to know more of the logistics: how many gardeners does she employ, what sort of watering system, etc. Also, A MOAT AND TWO DRAWBRIDGES?! We NEED to see the home!

It’s jolly nice that you appreciate the garden but I will never understand why people always demand more, it’s the very height of vulgarity, don’t you think the fact that the house is not revealed says something?

@@ronniealex5523 Lol, calling my curiosity the “height of vulgarity” is perhaps the “height of exaggeration”. I can think of things far more vulgar in this day and age. Sorry I struck a nerve, just loving it all and wishing for more information.

I agree with last comment...how many gardeners are employed and what about interviewing them to get a real idea on the upkeep and tips on growing and maintaining. My garden is small because that is all I can manage. Beautiful garden tho'.

Mr David Nicholls, deputy editor of ‘House and Garden’ (UK), designed a pictograph of stick-figure corpses arranged in a numbered grid of columns and rows. “Connect the Jews!” was his joke. Ask him about it. Ask him if it’s true. Because it is. That’s the kind of person who’s rating your bedsheets.
