CLIP DESCRIPTION:
On their 20th date, Trish (Catherine Keener) throws herself at Andy (Steve Carell) who freaks out, leading to a fight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One man nervously ventures forth into the final frontier in this comedy starring comic actor Steve Carell. Andy Stitzer (Carell) is a cheerfully geeky guy who is settling into middle age with his large collection of comic books, action figures, and collectable models. Andy works in an electronics store, and seems reasonably happy with his life. However, one day his friends and co-workers David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco), and Cal (Seth Rogen) discover that Andy has a secret -- due to his rather severe jitters around women, Andy is still a virgin. Andy's pals are appalled at this state of affairs, and set out to find a woman who'd be willing to get horizontal with him. After a number of disastrous dates, everyone thinks Andy has finally struck gold when he meets Trish (Catherine Keener), an attractive single mother who takes an immediate liking to him. What the other guys don't know is that Trish has just gotten out of a bad relationship, and has informed Andy she isn't ready to be intimate with him just yet. The 40-Year-Old Virgin was the first feature film directed by Judd Apatow, who previously served as a writer and producer for the well-regarded television shows Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and The Larry Sanders Show.

I tend to think the truth is that most of us reach a point where sex us just such a regular part of our lives that it becomes almost like eating or sleeping-just a given in life. So much so that we tend to forget that at one time we were scared and anxious virgins who really had no idea what the hell to do when it reached that point in the relationship for the first time.

You realize the whole point of romance is sex, right? A relationship without sex is a friendship, in which case why would you bother looking for a romantic relationship anyway?
@robinulibarri5517
@robinulibarri5517 10 жыл бұрын
The media constantly finds someway to make everything about sex; movies, TV, commicials. ("Buy this hamburger; a hot girl is eating it!" ). This makes society think so superficially like its some sort of game and not about romance. It puts more pressure on those who want to take relationships seriously or just haven't had experience. Sex is a beautiful, intimate thing and it's great to have fun with it, but the constantly enforced egotistical craze of it will make it less meaningful.

***** I probably shouldn't respond because I don't think it'll do any good, but well there you go. I assume by "Then we became more than friends" you mean you had sex shortly after the kiss. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that's pretty much the OP's point. Many people, like apparently yourself, have no notion at all about romance for romance. It's all romance for sex. If that's the only goal of romance in your eyes, I'm afraid none of your relationships are ever going to last. Sex is cool, sex is awesome. But you shouldn't make a beeline for it at the expense of realizing how great romance can be in and of itself. I hope you don't do that.

The mint condition toys represent Andy. He’s so obsessed with collecting toys and keeping them in their original packaging. In many ways, he’s still in his original packaging-at least sexually. A couple other commenters suggested this. I especially think there is something true and passionate about this scene, about the argument between them. The "bottom line" at this point in the film is that Andy rejects change. Sex is the keystone, but it is about who he is, about his failure to take action and take risks, potentially losing something (some identity?) he clings to (In this case, it is alluded to with his perfectly preserved toys: I love the way Carell says, "Do you know how hard it is for a kid to not open that?!" If we are listening, we can feel it, we can "know" it.). It is funny also, but I think that is, at least in this particular scene, secondary. There is a beautiful play of drama here. A four-star scene.

There’s a deep connection between the keeping of belongings and sexuality. Andy’s obsessive tendencies started as a child, he was conflicted between having fun and living in the moment and preserving something precious for a later time, for that perfect special moment. In Andy’s case that moment never came because there never was a stronger force to drive him out of his lethargy. Andy has maturity issues and he’s trapped under his fears to move on in life as he should biologically.
@hannotn
@hannotn 2 жыл бұрын
@@NoeliaJones He's also not a passionate person. He's very passive and that shows in his virtually non-existent libido. It's like he never experienced adolescence and sexual self-discovery, instead finding other pursuits with limited to zero thrill or risk. He's socially awkward, but on the other hand strangely self-assured with some things, because he takes comfort in the things he knows. It's kind of like an autistic person taking comfort in a particular action or place that feels safe.

For all people out there, who are afraid of not losing your virginity. Pleas take your time and I mean it. I lost mine to my ex with 28 and she was a bit pushy about it. In the end, the relationship did not work and I regret doing it. To be intimate with a person should be special, not just something you throw away.

That's why I'm waiting for marriage my friend; I should note though, that there have been a few incidents where it could have happened and I'm glad it didn't. I'm going to be honest and say that it's one of the most difficult but well worth it choices (at least what I've heard from my friends and what I believe) that you could make! There's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about if you're a virgin. Trust me; and those who make fun of you for it can go jump in a hole. Don't lose it just because you're being made fun of or everyone else is doing it. Wait for the right person and you'll be glad you did. There's no rush!

In most of America (and definitely in Los Angeles) it is, because our society has been indoctrinated into and made dependent on automobile culture over the last 70 years or so that not having a car is seen as being abnormal and bicycles are considered little more than toys for children. Only in a handful of dense cities like New York with decent cycling and public transit infrastructure will you find large amounts of people who can function normally without relying on a car to get around.

Classic manipulation. She is trying change him, into something he may not be ready for. She is valuing herself above a large variety of collector’s items. She then gets angry because she doesn’t get what she wants and resorts to name calling. A little communication could have possibly resolved or smoothed over the issue. Instead, he leaves insulted and is getting on with his life.

I resent that riding a bike to work is a sign of not growing up. I personally am an Engineer that bikes to work as often as I can. It's good excercise, saves money and has almost no environmental footprint. A bike being childish is just an American thing, in Germany, the Netherlands, France and I'm sure many other countries riding a bike is a perfectly normal part of adult life.
