Fun fact: Eddie was the first one to play with a drill, then Paul Gilbert used it with the picks (as shown in the video). I know this because in an interview, Eddie talks about how he played with a drill, then they talk about how after Eddie did it, paul Gilbert used a drill with picks that were glued onto a drill bit
@maxxxmodelz4061
@maxxxmodelz4061 2 жыл бұрын
@@dumbgoof2731 I just watched a video where he actually talks about how Eddie was, in fact, the guy who invented tapping as we know it. He was referring to how people insist that tapping existed before EVH, which is true, but how EVH transformed that into a style of playing that influenced a generation of guitar players. I forget what video, but he does acknowledge EVH, and in fact has a picture of Eddie on his wall in at least one video behind him.

The first time I'd ever seen a power drill used with a guitar was in the MTV Video Music Awards, circa 1994? I think. It was EVH playing the opening chords of Poundcake with a power drill. I had no idea Gilbert was doing this as early as 1988 when he played with Racer X. Very cool.

Back in 2016, I performed in a talent show with my teacher, and we both love prog metal and he bought the music Man majesty at the time and I played it in the show. But in that talent show, I saw a kid that looks 100% like your standard middle school bully, and the guy held the pick with not 2, not, 3 but ALL FIVE FINGERS. His hand looked like a disheveled crab of some sort, and after he played message in a bottle poorly, 13 year old me went up there and played "the enemy inside" by dream theater, and won the show. In an old video of Billy Sheehan, he talks about how Gilbert was using the drill during his solo and got his hair wrapped up in it. He stood there baffled, guitar feeding back, drill stuck to the side of his head. His tech came out to reverse the drill to get him out of it, only to pull it away then right back up wrapped the other way around the drill.

Went to a bar but not a bar (Had the typical bar layout and such, just no booze) and this group got up of 3 got up on stage. They said something about the other guy not being able to show up, and I guess that's how he compensated. Pretty badass to watch honestly. I assume the guitar on the floor was in an open tuning.

Check out Gabriel Marin from Consider the Source. He plays Middle Eastern and Sci Fi inspired Prog on a double neck guitar ONE FRETLESS, three pedalboards and can voice practically any instrument on his rig. They are a Brooklyn based trio i think. They have amazing chops and blend old world and new world with a taste of the space age. Very groovy and a diverse sound pallate. Ive never seen a guitar player do it quite like this cat.

I'm going to leave a bunch of weird crap here because I'm an Indie-head. I don't really think any of these have a chance of popping up in your vids, but it's worth a shot: --- Thurston Moore - Just the general abrasion of his playing, in addition to the alternate tunings he uses, makes him interesting to watch & listen to (specifically when he was in Sonic Youth). Like pre-shoegaze shoegaze (or... well, noise-rock - but my way of saying it is cooler) Ted Falconi - I don't even know how to describe what he did flatteringly, so I'll simply say he was like a drummer who played the guitar & somehow harmonized total free-improv noise with super slow, dirgy, cynical punk-rock in his band Flipper. It always looks like he's trying to attack his guitar and it's struggling to escape in all the live videos I've watched because he almost always uses violent upstrokes when he picks. Flipper is kind of like the best worst band ever and they practically invented grunge and sludge-metal almost a full decade before either was a thing that existed and people knew about. Norman Westburg - Every single note or chord he ever plays is dissonant, kind of like Ted Falconi if he wasn't intoxicated & actually consistently did it intentionally. Early Swans is incomparably heavy, slow, industrial, dirge-like, repetitive and brutal. Harmonizing through sheer-volume that literally made people sick when they played in small clubs. His style is still unique in their more recent work, but not nearly as weird. --- There's my choices, and I apologize for my taste lol

I saw the drill technique once, but the guy used it on the pick ups and nailed the bulls on parade Morello solo. It was about as close as a man could get to playing it right, without playing it like morello

The only reason I can see Sonic Youth not being included here is that you've either talked about them before or restringing to get the weird tunings to sound right and not permanently damaging the instrument with some of their more, uhhhhh, *creative* techniques would be tall asks.

Needle-nose pliers: Adrian Utley of Portishead uses them on the live recordings of Wandering Star (I noticed him doing it in 2008), the effect is like a violin bow mixed with a metal finger slide. It seems you hold the pliers on the string as if it were a slide to get the desired pitch, and then you oscillate them....meaning there is no fretting going on. It's haunting with a little bit of echo. I'm damn sure almost no one in your audience knows about this trick. Check it out!

I saw Buddy Guy this summer. He played a song (and very well) by snapping a towel on the strings. He played using the mic stand as a slide, he played by rubbing it on his shirt. He was just incredible, and, in his 8s!

The boys from Sonic Youth have been sticking things between their guitars strings for every, like drum sticks. With enough gain or fuzz, makes an interesting bell sound. The first time I heard The Burning Sphere, I thought it was some junk metal, like King Crimson was doing a decade before, but nope, sticks between the frets. I think they also did the drill thing before Paul Gilbert (revving, not the other thing 'cause who shreds in noise rock).

There's a guy in California (I think) who has no arms but can play beautifully just with his feet... I don't recommend you try it for yourself, this may take far longer to master than any of those others. ;) Quick note on Paul Gilbert's drill technique. I assumed you were aware of this but perhaps not. In the 90s when he used that technique with Mr Big on Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy, he was using (and still does as far as I know) and old style Makita drill which took longer for the motor to stop. That apparently was flagged as a health and safety hazard by Makita and they no longer make this specific model of drill (though I hear you can find them on eBay sometimes) and that's why your DeWalt doesn't sound quite the same. And I'd like to know how folks manage to play with their teeth, my nose gets in the way if I try :/
