This video shows what I believe are the worst fit skills in the Ring Fit Adventure game for Nintendo Switch. As a qualified personal trainer, I have to use critical thinking about what moves are good for you and what moves are bad for you. I dont believe Nintendo would ever put a dangerous move in the game, but I do feel certain exercises are not as good, not as useful or are potentially going to cause injury if performed poorly. Thats why I've made this video!

Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize it wasn’t just me whenever the moves doesn’t register for Plank and Mountain Climber. I always have to fumble around with my leg strap to readjust it so it could read my movement. Turns out it’s just the game itself 😬
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
Leg strap positioning does play a part, but more often than not I'm hearing about the move not registering well when performed with proper form. So it pushes you to do incorrect form to get it better in game. So weird! Someone recommended to me that doing push ups for planks is better than doing the planks, and I'm finding that more beneficial tbh

Master Trainer Peter ohh that sounds like a good idea! I’ll definitely try out those push ups and see if they work out. Thank you :)
@Pippemi
@Pippemi 3 жыл бұрын
It was the same for me, but I’ve realised after practicing with mountain climbers you just need to do almost an 180 degree twist of your leg. You need to go from really stretched with your leg out to really in, which you can only do if you take it a lot slower than the picture. Planks I still struggle with but it kills me whether I start from flat on the ground or in the proper form in a plank to start with so I’m not too worried.
@MrVariant
@MrVariant 3 жыл бұрын
For plank I lay down on stomach to start with legs barely touching the floor to not touch leg strap. Then yeah it's like doing pushups but with core. Boat pose almost impossible for me to register. I'll do that without ring fit. It has a good range of motion though videos don't show that crazed range. Just hold poses. I don't take the adventure mode seriously as trainer is annoying and power creep is a pain; the game forces you to do exercises that do the most damage rather than customize or get circuit bonuses for either working the whole body, or superset the same muscles.

The overhead arm spin was actually pretty good for me, I have very tensed up shoulder muscles due to stress, and due to the way you have to move the ring around I could feel how bad it was.. I use the overhead arm twist as a sort of 'resting' move when I'm doing something that tires me out a lot more, like a lot of core stuff (if I had to do planks and then leg rises one after the other I might just snap in half). It's similar for the overhead arm spin. It's fairly easy and lets me take an easy turn and to breath a little before I do more leg rises.

They should add moves banning, where you can ban the moves, my issue with ringfit is that I spent a lot of time in quick play, but I cry when I saw mountain climbing or knee to chest, I’m currently around 300 pounds, so it’s hella difficult to perform some exercises, I hurt myself when doing knee to chest during the beginning, and I had since avoid it like a plague, but I been playing it for a while and am able to perform the knee to chest without hurting myself, I think banning would be beneficial

Very interesting list! I was not expecting Plank to be on top, I've actually been enjoying it , never thought of the downside of it. I really enjoy these videos! Have you considered making a video (or videos) on the best skill combinations? I've been unlocking a lot of new moves and I don't know if I should keep the ones I have or if I should prioritize the new ones. I'm trying to keep a good variety of skills, but I don't know which ones are better than others
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
Very glad you found it interesting Ric! By skill combinations, you mean for adventure, yes? I guess it depends what you want to do; complete the levels or focus on specific training areas. When I play Adventure, I try to have a variety of skills hitting different amounts of targets and with different colours to get super effective hits as best as possible. Due to the levels needing different colour focuses down the line, I honestly find myself changing my skill sets out quite often and prioritise whats best to do that level. If I'm taking a particularly difficult skill (Boat Pose/Mountain Climber [when im trying to get perfect reps without sacrificing form, that is!] or Warrior 3) I'll often take an easier skill (Overhead Hip Shake/Warrior 2) as active recovery for after :) Does that help at all? Still, its certainly a video topic I'll consider!

So, all three (not squat-related) moves that I avoided like the plague most of the time because of their cruel difficulty made it on the list. It was especially satisfying to see Plank that high and I found it interesting how the three moves are so problematic mainly because of the game's implementation. And I felt bad that I could only pull them off by "cheating" (e.g. performing Plank with the knees on the ground or Mountain Climber by only moving the leg with the strap). The only other moves I have real difficulties with are the squat ones. Heck, after a squat-heavy session I'm pretty much incapacitated for two days.
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you found those issues too! Cheating through them isnt the way, but we can try to make adaptations to make the exercises work for us. May I suggest push ups (even on the knees) for the Plank? I've been finding better success with that! Keep working on those squats, they get easier!

Not a bad call! Some people find doing a push up (charging phase is holding top of the push up, so the easy part) is worth doing as an alternative. You get that midline strength and endurance from the plank position as meant, but you drop using your pecs more. Its worth considering if you're ok with push ups.

I do videos about playlists for custom mode playlists for specific goals, and I am working on playlists for the next few months; I do have an upper body one on the way, as well as a lower body training to use for a variety of goals and purposes. If its strength training you're after, then RFA wont be able to get you maximal strength, but it can prime you for hypertrophy and reinforce the strength you have well, and there is an upper body section for my strength playlists here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5uclNl6x7eugXU.html Hope this gives some ideas Patrick!

Thanks for the vid!! I feel so relieved. Because of my dyspraxia it's very hard for me to see/feel when I'm messing up an exercise. So I rely heavily on the scoring feedback. For most exercises, if I get a high score consistently, my body feels good afterwards (tired but satisfied and without pain). But for plank and mountain climbers it often hurts after getting high scores. (Boat pose too but that went away after I put something soft on the floor) I assumed the pain was my fault for "using the wrong muscles" - a comment I heard back in school a lot - but for once the cause for that may be external to me and my disability! When the world allows it again, I'll have to see about having someone monitor my movements as I play and help me adjust them to be healthy. Until then I'll swap these two out for alternatives that hurt less :)

I don’t get why some of the easiest moves are so powerful. I want to do the most damage but I feel like I’m cheating a bit having the overhead arm twist in my rota. I don’t mind them being there but they should be practically no damage and just there to help you recover after something tougher. Squats, mountain climbers and planks should be the highest damage.
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
Attack damage varies a bit between levels (there are 4 levels of each move!), but I agree its frustrating when you want a tougher workout. That said, you can always use the lower power moves to extend the workout too! As much as Mountain Climbers and Planks are tough, I'd rather they not be highest damage. Simply because it would encourage more people to use them in game, and the way the form is implemented is not particularly good...

In boat pose having your arms over your head is the harder variant of the pose (often you keep your arms near to your body). Also having a ringcon to deal with and having the breathing be reversed (breathing out to go down instead of going up) makes it so much harder. I've recently started doing yoga and found the boat pose to be a lot more doable there than in ring fit

@@MasterTrainerPeter Im not an expert in yoga by far so take this information with a bit of salt! But what I was taught is that with an inhale you have to fill your stomach with air, and with an exhale you sort of 'pushing' the air out by drawing your stomach in. This makes exhaling the best moment to do something in which you have to contract the muscles in the abdominal area. So therefore its usually inhale to lower, exhale to lift.

That very much sounds like tightness in the glutes and hips that is pulling on the lower back. I suggest stretching them out, and seeing if that eases the back. In this specific scenario, it sounds more likely for the glutes and hamstrings to be tight as its a posterior issue.

Mountain Climbers shouldnt involve that sort of rotation at the chest, its unnecessary for the effect that it attempts to achieve. Good on you for finding a slow, controlled movement that works, but I'd be concerned about hip stability and the spine in that movement.

Boat pose reminds me a lot of what was called the v-up when i was in the military. My lower back would hurt so much I wanted to cry. Luckily, it was only used by some drill sergeants, but i could feel how bad the exercise was for your back--or more so, spine-- as a whole and I couldnt just say no to it. You would cringe if you ever saw what we called the sidewinder. Horrible horrible for your spine

Thanks for the informative video! 1.That explains why my mountain climber sometime only reach "good" instead of "best" movements (though it is my own problem in movements). Yet I like the skill a lot and I will will use it no matter the attack stat shows. No need to watch the screen when performing it, right :) ? 2. I just obtained Boat Pose this week. I almost killed my abdomen if I tried to lift my legs when doing it. Maybe I will try that in later stage of the game, physically prepared I guess. 3. Maybe I will put push up instead of planks as well (if my arms are good enough, Ha!).

No problem! Yeah, I wish Mountain Climbers would register better in the game, as theyre really good for you. I just dont want to encourage people to use poor form just to get a 'great' score, you know? Haha! Definitely try doing some hip hinge moves (Overhead Bend, Squat, Leg Raises) to help prepare for Boat Pose. Its great once you can do it safely! And yes, Push Ups instead of planks is a great call hahahh!

to get the most out of the overhead arm twist, you have to also squeeze your glutes and activate your abs to get the most out of it, but they only seldom mention that. i definitely agree with the mountain climbers. i never cared too much for them as an exercise, but i can never figure out how the game wants me to do them to get a maximum score. when it comes to boat pose, the movement of my arms are usually enough to slowly lower me down and my legs seem to almost move on their own to counter-balance. the only thing i might be concerned about would be strain on the lower back as that's generally the only issue i see, otherwise, it feels like the leverage from moving my arms does most of the work while my core works with them to keep pace. i think the overhead arm spin is supposed to be an exercise for really focusing on your upper back and shoulders as most exercises would probably only workout certain parts of your shoulders, but maybe i'm wrong. i feel like the problem with the plank is just the fact that it's not exactly a plank anymore and it tends to workout my upper back and glutes more than the rest of my core. it's really just a strange modified version that took awhile for me to be able to do them consistently, but a it doesn't help in the same way a normal plank would

Nice points here. I still dont feel that as far as Overhead Arm Twist and Overhead Arm Spin goes, they give you much in comparison to the other moves within RFA. There are better options for all of them. Interesting about the counter balance of Boat Pose, but yeah, the lower back strain on the untrained body is a real possibility. Definitely heard tales of this move causing issues like that.

See, I feel if the game was able to register lack of movement (which it can), then you could do a normal plank. And then it would allow for regressions like knee-planks etc. That would be better in game and physically for you. Hopefully Ring Fit 2 will do it!

I had introversion and extroversion explained to me as where you get your energy. I know introverts who work out in gyms but keep to them selves as they get energy from themselves (that includes myself). @@MasterTrainerPeter I think, there are several types of introverts as well. Me and my mother are extreme introverts on completely different sides of the spectrum; she is only stimulated by calories, weight ins and very pedantical follow up forward concrete goals down to grams of weight and number of steps a day and this massive trip she wants to do, learning every single detail about tourism walking. I am not motivated by physical or health goals at all and more storyline based, mentally stimulating things like Zombie Run podcast a story unlocked by chapters with gps walking, Pokemon Go where you collect pokemons by walking and suddenly a part of Poke-community or Fit Ring where whole game opens up ....is what distracts the mind from the body, if it makes sense? Because it is not the body, that is the issue.The body has unbelivable capabilities. It is the mind, that screws up and brings up every single insecurity up to the surface, and it is humiliating and rather sad when something like not knowing how to use a gym tool is enough of a reason to never go back to the gym. Not because one, used it unsafely, but because it is embaressing to go back to that mental place, where one is child like and not in contol of situation, fully incompetent for probably weeks, forced to be the worst one/weakest one.

I've been toying with the idea of trying to get into a habit of exercising for a while now. I have chronic back and right shoulder problems/pain and figured I could benefit from it as far as helping to build my strength and endurance. Especially when I've always benefited from physical therapy. Had some of that new year motivation in me and bought it New Years Eve. The game seemed like a really good introduction without being overwhelming. Been taking it slow, started with 10 minutes that day and increasing it by a couple minutes each day. Tonight I did an 18-minute work out which I was super proud of. Eventually, I'd like to do at least 30 minutes. Might not seem like much to most, but when you live with chronic pain it's a big feat! Well, I unlocked planking tonight. Against my better judgment, I gave it a whirl. I think I'll be staying away from it as far as the game is concerned. When I first clicked on this video I was really hoping you'd say planking was #1. I completely agree that the way it's implemented in-game, it puts more strain on your shoulders. My bursitis flared up a bit, nothing bad, but my shoulder is not happy. Sorry for the rambling! But I wanted to thank you so much for your Ring Fit content. I've been watching your videos the last couple of nights and they've been really helpful for both an exercise newbie and someone new to the game.

That slow build up is fantastic, and especially considering the challenges you have with pain, you should be so proud of yourself! Just make sure to take rest days to let your body heal up as well! I'm glad you're going to avoid planking, if you have chronic shoulder issues, its definitely not going to be good for you. Thankfully there are minimal areas where it is 'required'. I'd also be wary of the Mountain Climbers owing to the positioning that your shoulder are; its similar to the plank, but without quite the same weight bearing. I'm really glad the videos are helping! Hopefully they'll help you get a more quality workout each time too!

I’ve done planks before, it shouldn’t be too bad!” And then they did the raises, and the whole thing went allllll the way down to my least favorite exercise. I could understand normal planking, but this wasn’t a very good move. I still used it, because it did great damage early on, but it hurt. I’d have rather done 3 sets of knee-to-chests in a row at that point than do it again.

Hmm, some of these I understood; I never benefited much from arm twist or its spin. Boat pose I enjoy though i'm not trained in it, and can recognize its iffy position due to a past experience; I was tired when i did it in one long session and found my muscles near lower rib cage felt bruised for a few days. Plank though? I enjoy it actually, and never have problems with the tracking of it. And I still feel some of the good tension in my core on use. Not as much as a regular plank, but still felt okay. Mountain climber... I hate it yet i force myself to do it. The counter never registers enough of it, but I mostly enjoy the cardio portion. I do find myself getting head rushes from it though on particularly longer sets. I personally find all but the original squat to be rather bad at least in terms of tracking. Wide Squat I worry i'll hurt myself trying to get it to register a good score. For future video ideas, I would love opinions on custom training sets for when going for a particular quick style work out. Like cardio sets, stretching sets, etc. The games auto-arranger often includes games and god I many they recommend. I suppose mini game assessment wouldn't be a bad idea either!

Hey Ruesen! So, glad you got the point with where I was going with the video! For the plank, if you're feeling its doing good and you're able to get it to work ok, then thats cool! I find a lot of people telling me that they aren't able to get it to register well, and I find fairly often that I am unable to get it to register without an additional arch, and I worry about peoples backs during the movement. The fact that the counter doesnt register properly is my issue with Mountain Climber. I get it 100% of the time with jumping out my knees laterally, but theres a slight twist in the back to do it, which I feel isnt great for you. If it registers whilst you're performing it with a straight knee drive, then sweet! But a lot of the time it doesnt, and then it detracts fromthe exercise :) I've got a few playlists done already, with one based on flexibility coming out in the next few weeks! If you like the custom mode, there are a few cardio ones in here: Playlist 1 - Weight Loss - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMV1fbqUsdC-eIk.html Playlist 2 - Endurance - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zpamps6GnbmxfIE.html Playlist 3 - Strength - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5uclNl6x7eugXU.html Playlist 4 - Core Conditioning - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8CRobul2L2zhpc.html Playlist 5 - Weight Loss 2 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jdWFqM-l39yZdo0.html Any particular goal you're after?

Hey, sorry for the late reply! If you're looking to build core strength in general, some of the easier moves are Overhead Hip Shake (ensure to be still, stand tall and generate movement solely from the hip), Overhead Bend (feet planted, bending solely at the hip - this will aid the posterior chain to held build the strength for Boat Pose), Seated Leg Raise (a tougher move, but only from the resistance gravity gives - try lower reps at first!) and Knee To Chest (similar to Boat Pose but less stress on the body, just be careful about internal rotation at the hips). These help build the core strength needed to take Boat Pose on!

I hate everything about the plank except the fact it's a decently strong multi-target move. Not only is the movement detection poor (it's counted a couple of times I've stood still as reps, and sometimes I've had to lower my hips lower than usual for the rep to count), but the motions go against the entire point of the plank, which is to remain rigid _like a plank is supposed to be_ to strengthen your core muscles.

I gotta say I agree with all of these moves being the worst, but I do enjoy using overhead arm twist for 2 reasons, 1. To take a break from moves I get tired of such as Overhead Press and Bow Pull and 2. To get some quick damage on enemies. I have started playing this game since late march this year and as someone who doesn't enjoy working out, this game at least tries to make it fun. The other moves I completely agree with. I either use them and despise them and never want to use the move again like mountain climber and Plank or I just have no desire to use them due to me nit unlocking them yet and you showing them lol.

How do you find warrior 3 pose? i just unlocked that for difficulty. It's one I've kept in my assigned skills so far in the campaign so i can work on it. But balance with it is quite tough.

I think the wide range of benefits that Warrior 3 brings (deadlift similarity, sheer posterior chain work) outweight the difficulty issue. The implementation and cueing is really good, but it is very tough. Top 5 move, I talk more in depth in the 5 best moves video :)

Unlocked Plank yesterday. Did 30 of the slowest planks ever. So hard for someone that's a bit overweight :(

It is a tough old exercise. Its more of a pike than anything else in this game haha.

Hello, do you recommend any home console games (like Ring Fit Adventure) for Parkinson's Disease patients?

I'm not able to recommend specific exercises for Parkinson's Disease patients. If a doctor says this sort of exercise would be ok, then go for it.

Oh I was doing a lot of planks because they're hard. I'm glad I can stop those. Surely the most pointless one is moving your hips side to side

TBH Mountain Climbers and Boat Pose are better for your core than Plank. Just take care when doing them. And Overhead Hip Shake is useful for obliques and the more external hip muscles, so helps with hip hinging stability.

Never really had an issue with the skills registering for me, EXCEPT for Russian Twist for some odd reason. It would just...stop for no reason. All the others register just fine for me, although I've noticed that squats have me hitting the floor. The planks are actually one of my favorites. I can feel it working on me, along with the leg raises and pedals rushes.

Strange, never heard of Russian Twist not detecting. Might be a range of movement issue? For squats, I'd try adjusting the leg strap. Glad you like planks! I just dont think its a great exercise in comparison to others, but if it works for what you need, then do it!!

@@MasterTrainerPeter In hindsight, lately I've been having more issues with exercises registering, to the point where even running fails to register properly at times. I'm not sure if I've broken something or... Ah well. Thanks for the comment and video!

Lol I just got the plank skill and used it yesterday. I used to be in better shape but I am not right now. My core in still sore from doing the planks yesterday.

Yeah, planks are rough. Try push ups, or commando planks instead. They get the range but dont have the silly hip hinge there.

what is your opinion on Standing Twist and Tree Pose?
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
Standing Twist is a great active recovery move that gets work on the hips. Its not intense, so its not going to do masses, but inbetween higher energy compound moves like Overhead Squat or Boat Pose, its a great way to move. Tree Pose I really dig tbh. The balance and stability focus is really good, and I get clients to do similar actions to Tree Pose to help with foot stability for lunging etc.

Hm, Mountain Climber works for me properly and I'm actually quite overweight. (So it freaking kills me, but I swear I can do it right when rested.) Perhaps the way the game registers your jogging/high-stepping movements on initial setup figures into how some of these moves are registered as well.
@MasterTrainerPeter

It should theoretically be the same, as its a very similar movement. I wonder if it is to do with signal being blocked by the arms, but then I change position and its still doing similar problems.

Get a few steps in to get to top speed and then jump + hover. This gets easier later in the game owing to ability unlocks.

I hated mountain climbers before ring fit and now I hate them even more because it won’t register them properly…

I did notice boat pose is incredibly difficult and I def. have a weak form over all and lack the core strength to not have my shoulders touch the ground every time. Performing the exercise doesn't hurt though and it feels like a good workout for those muscles building them up to maybe be able to do it correctly. So should I better stop doing it and replace it in my set or continue with it as even poor form does have a good training effect?
@MasterTrainerPeter
@MasterTrainerPeter 3 жыл бұрын
So, whilst Boat Pose is good as a move when performed correctly, performing it with bad form encourages the muscles to work in that poor fashion. Remove it, get your Knee To Chest, Overhead Bend and Leg Raise really good, and then go for Boat Pose.

Thank god im not the only one who had issues with the mountain climbers in this game. I recently beat the game for the first time and I’m planning to start the New Game + soon, but even so, every time I encountered a fitness set in the game with them, I audibly yelled “NOOOOOO!” The move isn’t the problem, I actually think it’s a great workout. The issue is that it never registers correctly. It ends up really pissing me off, even making me quit early at one point. The worst part of it (for me) is when you have to complete a certain quest that requires you to get an average of 90 points or more. It brings down the point total in the results screen down significantly. It never made me fail the quest, but I was constantly worried that it would.

You're 100% right there, Mountain Climbers are an excellent move...just not the way Ring Fit encourages you to do it for the perfect registering of the move.
