@@gavinmillar816 I haven’t seen it so I have no opinion on it. I have no trouble believing that they were overly critical since it’s clearly not their usual tastes. However, those videos have rewired my brain to where “it took 12 years to make” is my automated response whenever that movie comes up.

@@robertbaxley3298 it clearly has rewired my brain aswell. As soon as i read your comment I heard it in their slurred alcoholic Wisconsin accents! I'm honestly surprised they took against it so strongly thou. They've recommended plenty of similarly low key dramas before (I recently watched Paddelton on Netflix thanks to their suggestion and enjoyed it) If you haven't seen it I urge you to check it out. I loved it

"Do you like movies" is a question I've been asked. It comes from the belief one cannot be "critical" of something, as in the analysis of the faults and merits of a given subject, and at the same time be in love with it. That's odd to me, and I think reflects a simplistic, black and white perspective of the world, if not reality. The only other context where I've been asked this question is political, i.e., that I hate the country of my birth because I can be critical of it.

Always enjoy these periodical QnA's. Congrats on 50k! On my question of film being gate kept by the rich: Yeah, there's a lot you could say about it, and it's something I've been thinking about a lot this year as I, a near broke, working class citizen, try to make my own documentary. You focused more on the strictly monetary aspect of it, but I don't even think that's the most complex part of the issue, and I think in the modern day a lot of the gatekeeping is psychological. I had to deal with my own feelings of inadequacy in making The Steel Garden, since I have no crew, no money, and no industry connections, and I felt this subject deserved better treatment than what I could give. But then something happened. When I released my video announcing that filming for it was underway, someone who I know watched it asked me (paraphrasing) "Where did you get all the money to make this?" And then it kind of hit me: film has been gate kept by the rich so well that even when someone sees a no-budget production like mine, they just assume that it took a lot of money. I don't wanna go on too much about it, but what I've realized is that in the 21st century most people have cheap enough technology at their disposal to make no budget movies as a hobby or to start their career, but hardly anyone does because we have been conditioned to think of film as a capitalistic product made by the rich for the consumption of the poor/working class rather than an art form which anyone can contribute to. The idea of movies being expensive to make, even though technically it doesn't have to be true, is so ingrained that it stops people from making anything, and when it doesn't, all those people have for a frame of reference is movies made with lots of money, so they try to replicate those and ultimately fail, reinforcing the view that low budget/straight to video/ect movies are illegitimate. Again, lots more that can be said about this, and it'd make for an interesting video project that I unfortunately don't have the time to make, but I'll just say that this mindset is one that I think ultimately has to be chipped away at by us, the film community (critics/analysts and filmmakers alike) because it's the only way we're going to see film become like music or writing where regular, everyday people contribute to it. (like you said all art is somewhat gate-kept by wealth, but if you went to a random community somewhere, you're probably 10x more likely to find a local musician, poet, or painter than a local filmmaker that makes movies with the meager means he has, and I think social/psychological conditioning is a big part of that. Anyway, that's all, I'll stop now, thank you for entertaining me, lmao)

Your response of "Why is it just a given that I'm in the middle" at the human centipede question had me in fits of laughs X'D But a follow up question to that I have is this; If you were put in a human centipede, but were allowed to pick your spot, where would it be? And what spot would you prefer the least? Also would your desire for death lessen if you were allowed to pick your spot in the human centipede? I wanna turn this into the new "what hogwarts house are you in really" XD

Firstly, Luc. Secondly, you are great. Re: death of the author, I come from a literature theory background, and I always find the idea that a director or author has power over interpretation strange. They make the text, so their intent is part of it. But so is accident and incompetence and unintended cultural meanings. And the intents of everybody else involved; what about the costume designer's intent? They may have secret internal meanings they imbued into the outfits and the designs, and these would also be beyond the reach of the director. As far as I can see, an author is a reader of their own text. They may have a better idea at what was intended by some of the people involved in the creation but that's about the extent of their insight.

I would watch the hell out of that Amadeus-esque idea involving Malick and Spielberg. I haven't seen Thin Red Line yet, but I can easily name 10 other war movies better than Saving Private Ryan and I would take any excuse I can find to shit on a Spielberg film not named Jurassic Park.

Come on dude. The Thin Red Line is better than Saving Private Ryan. But SPR is still a very good film. Spielberg has a list of some utterly spectacular films. I also love Jurassic Park but it barely squeezes into his top ten Jaws (which is literally a perfect movie) Raiders of the Lost Ark Close Encounters Duel Schindlers List Catch me if you Can ET Minority Report Yes he's made a few duds (1941, Hook, The Terminal) But the man has earned our respect

Here is a easy cheat for the top 5 non ghibli films, Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro! It is made by Miyazaki before he formed studio Ghibli. Its the best Lupin III film by far, and it's the one movie I would reckomend starting with if you ever are overcome with madness and decide you wanna get into Lupin III. And the movie just slaps. Also it is interesting o see Miyazaki work within boundraries. Most of his Ghibli films are mostly his vision realized, the stories he wanted to tell how he wanted to tell them. But with Lupin III he has boundraries. He is working with a established IP, and Lupin is kinda the kind of protagonist Miyazaki isn't particularly fond of. A master thief who rarely seems to thinks of anyone but himself, the kind of person who doesn't care for the damage he causes as long as he gets what he wants. And Miyazaki did adjust Lupin in subtle ways to make him more malleable to him as the protagonist. And Castle of Cagliostro is the culmination of the work he put into Lupin III, and how he forever changed the franchise for better or for worse.
