"Georgy Girl" should be your next Seekers song. It's sad that when Judith Durham passed away last year, it happened at roughly the same time as Olivia Newton-John. Olivia's death rightfully received worldwide attention, but Judith's death was treated as something of an afterthought. Two Australian ladies with incredible voices.

Musically Judith smashed Livvy out of the ballpark. But Olivia had a good voice and had a lot of charisma. She was in the right place at the right time, and we shouldn't begrudge her that. She brought a lot of joy to people. Judith chose a different path.

Olivia Neutron Bomb was her nickname thanks to her grandpa, Max Born. He was a nobel laureate in physics and one of Oppenheimer's professors in grad school.

The Carnival is over by the seekers was released in Australia the day that my great grandfather died whom I’m named after, who I sadly never meet, I wasn’t born for another five years. To me it breaks me and brings me to tears every time I heart it because of the personal attachment to this track. It was used as a funeral song a couple of times when family members passed away including my father. Thank you for listening to this song, it’s a very powerful song. Bless.

I loved the Sixties Folk Rock movement, fabulous songs that spoke to everyone. Judith Durhams voice is so unique, she is sadly missed. There is such a deep pool to dive into here. ✌️

Great Aussie band. I have seen people in tears listening to this song. It was played at a funeral in our extended family ... not a dry eye. Judith had an amazing voice and was a lovely lady... I believe she was classically trained. R.I.P.

Man I love this group. Judith Durham was so special. The double bass is an important orchestral instrument. Still very much in use. Carnival is a medifore ... for their life, happiness, before they split up.

Judith Durham started out being a jazz singer; and she later married a jazz pianist. with my bestie as teenagers, we went to a jazz concert with her and husband Ron Edgeworth. Her voice was wonderful in concert! So pleased to see this clip; Aussies like me fondly remember the Seekers. Thanks Rob and Amber🥰🥰

(*tears*) Morningtown Ride. Oh I ❤❤❤ that song so much. It's so beautiful. Played it to my own children as a lullaby on the guitar (and Puff the Magic Dragon too of course - and prefer the Seekers version). The Seekers were a folk group from Melbourne who worked their fare to sail to England in the 60s. They met Tom Springfield (Dusty's brother) who gave them a song he wrote called 'I'll Never Find Another You' which was a #1 hit in Europe and Australia. They were so loved in their home country, they performed from time to time until Judith's passing with massive crowds.

Agree with other posters "Georgy Girl" is a must, one of their most popular songs and absolutely definitely "We are Australian" - the Farewell performance. Considered by many to be our real National Anthem!

This became an even more poignant song after Judith's passing last year. I think I saw someone say that this song was based on a Russian folk song of some sort that was given English lyrics. Whatever she's singing, Judith delivers with beauty and control. And, of course, the guys are in great form too. That's one of the things I love about The Seekers---the masculine voices blending with hers. So lovely. Rest in peace, Judith Durham.

I grew up on Morningtown Ride, the lyrics to which have just lodged in my head listening to this. Their Grand Final performance of Waltzing Matilda with the legendary Australian folk singer Slim Dusty, which they merge with I Am An Australian, is amazingly good.

The Carnival is over, what a wonderful song and always played at the end of the Seekers concerts. It is originally a Russian folk song, circa 1883. It tells the story of the singers heartbreak of braking up with their lover. Georgy Girl is a definite must next and the patriotic song I am Australian.

The song was indeed adapted from a church hymn- What a Friend We Have in Jesus. Amber is so astute! The Seekers were just glorious!

Yes it's an adaptation but the melody is from a Russian folk song about Stenka Razin, not from What A Friend We Have in Jesus, and the words are by Tom Springfield who wrote many of the Seekers' hits.

You have just listened to one of the greatest female singers ever. She could sing Pop- Folk- Country- Jazz- Gospel, she was born with a lung problem but had the voice of an Angel. I saw her in Concert in Belfast, Northern Ireland U.K. it was a year after she had an operation to remove a brain tumour. She came on stage looked very tiny and frail, I thought it's not going to be good, but she started to sing and her voice was as wonderful as ever there was not a dry eye in the venue.

The Seekers are so underrated today, as has been suggested I Am Australian is truly brilliant and is the subject of a campaign to get it adopted as Australia’s National Anthem. If you watch anything from their Farewell Tour just keep in mind that after the first show Judith suffered a brain haemorrhage and the Tour had to be suspended until she was well enough to resume, and yet her voice is as perfect as it ever was.

Rob S...some context. Seekers arrived in UK in 65 and unknown immediately recorded " I'll never find another you" which went to number one. To arrive and be number one so quickly was shocking. Finding fame so fast is hard. By 1968 Judith Durham was suffering from being in the spot light and not liking the publicity. She decided in early 68 to LEAVE the band!! She was irreplaceable. This song was one of their last released....and really summed up their sad departure. Judith went home and the 3 guys struggled to find a replacement. Decades later they reunited. Carnival is over is a great farewell. Georgy girl.....Next plz.

The main tune of "The Carnival is Over" is adapted from a Russian song about the Cossack ataman Stenka Razin which became popular in Russia in the 1890s.

As a teenager in the 1960 The Seekers was a band your parents listened to. They weren’t trendy, she does have a lovely voice, but as I say classed as boring to us. We all liked The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers etc, but when The Monkees came along we all went crazy for them. They were that popular they had their own series that we all looked forward to every week. It was a mad, zany show full of silliness and fantastic music. Check them out, they were massive. The Beatles were still popular, but for us young teenagers 14/15 the Monkees reigned supreme! I do like you 2, I’m an old girl now 70 this year. I’ve lived a full hectic life since leaving school at 15, I still love my music which ranges from the Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Noel Gallagher etc etc. I live in England with my husband, we have 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. There is so much music in our house, we have been to hundreds of concerts, I saw the Beatles back in the day. Not one word of any song was heard because all the girls screamed and actually cried when they were singing. Good days! Yes - more Mamas & Papas or Peter, Paul & Mary for more 60s pure talent and vocals. Another 60s group with talent & vocals was Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon wrote a song for the Seekers called 'Someday One Day' which is also great. And Paul & the Seekers' Bruce Woodley (who wrote 'I Am Australian' - react to this one day!) co-wrote a song called 'Red Rubber Ball' which was a big hit in the US in the 60s. The Seekers are also best known for "Georgy Girl" from the movie of the same name. Mamas and Papa's "Creeque Alley" and Peter, Paul, and Mary's edit: "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" a song they mention The Mamas and The Papas as well as other artist. Both kind of Rockumentry of the then current music scene.

I think the key thing about group like the Seekers, the Mamas and the Papas, Peter Paul and Mary and other vocal groups of the period is that they are singing close harmony with a very light acoustic accompaniment. That's a very unforgiving genre if any of them is slightly off key then is just doesn't work, so the group's that we remember as successful were really really good. You should check out the Batchelors, effectively a close harmony crooner trio.

Judith was such a wonderful person, such a loss when she left us early. Peter, Paul and Mary did "Puff the magic dragon" As a 60 year old it still brings a tear to my eye. The Seekers in concert sometimes did "puff" as many people thought they sang it originally, so not to disappoint people they slipped it in.

This took me back to my boyhood when mum had the radio on in the kitchen all day long....the seekers were much loved in the UK. We kinda took the 60s 70s and 80s for granted, so much fantastic and varied music, we thought it would never end.....sadly it faded and died.

1968 I recorded the Seekers from our Black and White TV in Perth West Australia on 1/4 reel to reel tape and took that recording of their Farewell TV show with me to university in Duluth Minnesota. When I felt alone at night I would put the tape on and be transported by those voices, At university I listened to friends singing one night and apologized that I had no musical talent and could not join them. The lead said not to feel bad for the fact that I was their and that I was enjoying their performance was a gift to them. That you enjoy what we can do gives meaning for our talent has become a gift. Many Decades later the Seekers came back together and now I can put studio quality headphones on and tears come to my eyes.

Yep! Judith with her perfect annunciation never fails to deliver. If you like The Seekers, then any song by them is pretty much guaranteed to hit the spot. I like "World of our own", but again everything by them is an excellent choice.

You need to check out "I Am Australian", their farewell performance of it. It's our unofficial anthem here in Aus. And you'll get to see just how well they aged, performing decades after this vid you just watched.

I'm from Manchester, UK, and I've never heard "I am Australian" , so I immediately checked it out (you and other's recommendation). It's bonzer, great, ripper (if that's correct?) and certainly worthy of the "unofficial anthem" tag. Once again a fantastic performance by the band and the medley included a particular favourite of mine "Waltzing Matilda".

This song was played at my dad's funeral I was 12 years old when he died and now I am 21 I hope u did my dad proud everyday I miss you dad you were my hero and my everything I will keep living the legacy you left for me I would go through hell and back ten times over if I could have you with me and say I love you son just one more time rest well I promise one day we will meet again

Most of their songs give me goosebumps, Judith's voice was incredible. But this one and I'll Never Find Another You make me cry my eyes out.

What a great Folk Band They even gave the beatles a run for their money bak then in the 60s . They toured with Beatles for a while as a backing group and John Lennon liked them very much . Of course they are Austrailian . They were a very well organised some of their songs were written by Tom Springfield , Dusty springfields brother . Every one of their songs are magic . Sadly Judith Duram passed away last year . The Bee Gees wrote a song for them called Massachusettes , their manager refused to let them record it . THE BEE GEES . Later released it them selves it was a massive hit for them . When Maurice of the Bee Gees died the seekers released a cover of Masssachusettes in honour of Maurices death . Firstly I just want to say how much I enjoy watching your vids, keep up the great work. Judith Durham ,lead singer with The Seekers was really incredible for what she achieved vocally, because she suffered from severe asthma from birth, developed Bronchiectasis after contracting measles aged 4, so each performance was a struggle for her to control her breathing without suffering pain. Check out The Seekers singing I Am Australian, Georgy Girl & Waltzing Matilda* Live, 1994 , when they are all in their 50's . Judith's voice is amazing.

Not to be confused with The New Seekers 'You won't find another Love Like Mine' Well worth a listen. A folk sounding song from a group with a string of good songs. A nice easy on the beat sound. Th for the post & your reactions\Incite.

This is a great song from the Seekers but as several other people have mentioned you need to hear their performance of "I Am Australian" at their Special Farewell Performance, it gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it, I'm not even Australian but when I hear this song I wish I was, it's very special.

I was aware of this song on the radio when I was 5yo , they were on uk tv so often I thought they were British , I now know they were our antipodean cousins , I’m sure there’s a lot of sad Aussies with Judith passing away not long after Olivia NJ… bless them both 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

"The Carnival is Over" is a story based on an old Russian folk song dating back to 1883. It involves two characters who are reminiscent of Pierrot and Columbine from commedia dell'arte, an early form of professional theater that originated in Italy and was popular throughout Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. Pierrot, a melancholic clown, was hopelessly in love with Columbine, but she chose Harlequin over him. Harlequin is also the name of a romance novel publishing house inspired by the same characters. The story is echoed in the 1986 movie "Pretty in Pink." The Carnival symbolizes the end of the happy times that the young lovers enjoyed together. Despite the end of their relationship, they part ways amicably with no hard feelings. The narrator reveals that they will always love the other until their dying day.

This song was written by Tom Springfield, who also produced the Seekers recording. The song reflects a bit of his history. Tom Springfield enlisted for his UK National Service from 1952-1954 and was assigned to the Joint Services School for Linguists in Coulsdon, Surrey (the UK's counterpart to the Defense Language Institute here in the US) where he attended what was known as "The Russian Course" in order to serve as an intelligence linguist. During the course Springfield was exposed not only to Russian language, but also culture and folklore. And one of the bits of Russian culture he would have been exposed to was a traditional Russian folk song - the ballad "Stenka Razin" (also known as Volga Volga). Springfield borrowed this Russian melody and it became the first part of the melody of "The Carnival is Over".

The First Australian band that had success overseas when Australia wasn’t at the top of everyone’s thoughts overseas…..Australian pioneers that said our artists are as good as performers and Bands from overseas….. and as you’ve discovered…. INXS, Little River Band, John Farnham, Dyvinals, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel etc.

The tune is from the old (1880s) Russian song "Stenka Razin" with completely new lyrics put to it by Tom Springfield. Other Russian/Ukrainian songs turned into English popular songs were "Those Were the Days" performed by Mary Hopkins, "Strangers in Paradise" originally performed on Broadway by Richard Kiley and later covered by Tony Bennett, and "Carol of the Bells" performed by damn near everybody every Christmas.
