Judith is one of the most recognizable voices in musical history. She still can belt it out. They actually kept the Beatles and Stones out of #1 with their hit song, I'll Never Find Another You, in 1964. Judith has defied death and got herself back to singing after not being able to talk. She lost her husband due to very rare illness and this group was, and possibly still is, the biggest Aussie group ever. If you can do more of their songs. They are worth it.

TY for reacting to The Seekers, it is with total shock and deep sadness we found out our Judith Passed away a few days ago at the age of 79. Judith Durham was not only a fantastic singer she was a National Treasure here, a beautiful lady with an even more beautiful soul. She will be given a State Funeral in Victoria so many can at least pay their last respects too her. The Seekers were HUGE in the 60's and Judith went on to show us her fabulous voice ever since then. Sad days for us all who loved her and The Seekers. Ty for this wonderful reaction it was as if you were meant to do it just before her passing. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖💖💖😭😭😢😢

The song was written by TOm Springfield and is based on an old cossack folk tune "The Song of Stenka Razin". It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and no one does it quite like The Seekers did it, Melody, harmony, they played there own instruments, no lip-synching and they didn't have auto tune. They had so many great hits including "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World Of Our Own", "Georgy Girl", "Morningtown Ride", "Someday, One Day" etc. They have beautiful voices & harmonies. The popular song is known by the words Volga, Volga mat' rodnaya, Iz za ostrova na strezhen, and, simply, Stenka Razin. The song gave the title to the famous Soviet musical comedy Volga-Volga. The melody was used by Tom Springfield in the song "The Carnival Is Over" that placed The Seekers at #1 in 1965 in Australia and the UK. (this is from the Wikipedia entry Stenka Razin so that seems to be the name of the song but if you look at the Wikipedia entry about the Seekers song it mentions that this Stenka song (circa 1880s) was itself adapted from a Russian folksong but they don't make it clear what the exact name of that folksong was - that's about as far as I can get in giving you an answer to your question - hope it helps)

You describe how I've felt about Judith Durham and the Seekers since I was five! I'm 60 in November. I lived for the Seekers as a youngster, and I still feel emotional about all their songs. She recently had her 79th birthday and is still living in Australia. She was still singing until about 4- 5 (?) years ago. I went to see the Seekers in 2014, and her voice was as good as it was all those years ago. The three boys deserve more than a passing mention too. Athol Guy brought the Seekers together, and Judith replaced a male singer they'd previously had. Bruce Woodley is an excellent songwriter, and actually did quite a bit of work with Paul Simon. He wrote 'I am Australian' which moved a massive audience in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Keith Potger did the musical arranging and was especially talented at it. Easy to overlook this, but without him, the Seekers would not have had that unique sound that their instruments produced. He went on to form the New Seekers in the 1970s, but was not play with them. I think he might have performed with them just a couple of times, but certainly no more than that.

Alan, she sang, circa 63, Ezekiel, in B/W vid. That voice, heavenly. It was up on KZfaq, but can't find it, predates Seekers.

Watching their videos you become aware of her amazing international, male, fan base. Males/gentlemen with more classical taste in music absolutely adored her and her singing.

As many have said below the Seekers are from Australia. they decided to come to London as the 60's music scene had had really exploded here with The Beatles, The Stones. they said they would stay 6 months and if nothing happened go home. They stayed 5 years i believe before going home again and in between had hit after hit inc. the title song the the film Georgy Girl. I discovered the Seekers as a boy from my mums old 45 records and this song was always my favorite.
