As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

I wonder if you would have any bowing in the middle. I know it would be harder since the boards are on the short side. Might just add another leg in the middle for additional support and look.

Thank you for the great tutorial, I just made this bench and it turned out great! I found a few tutorials for this bench online, but felt yours was the most detailed and easy to understand. 2 things I did differently… I used wood glue only (no nails or screws). My bench will be used more for decorative purposes, but I’m still not afraid to sit on it (or have multiple people sit on it) I also used Fusion Mineral Paint in Aloquin for the paintwash instead of Behr 😊

@@joeymadera1 unfortunately more than $60. I live in Southwestern Pennsylvania and went to my local Home Depot. 1x4x8 white wood boards were $7 and some change a piece so almost $80 for wood alone. The wood glue was $8, paint was $30, and minwax wood filler was around $10. You can save some by buying cheaper paint (any tan paint would work to do a paint wash. Fortunately I already have polyurethane and sand paper at home. IMO I still think it was worth it because I can’t find any solid wood benches for $130, plus I get the satisfaction of making it myself. Good luck!

Seems like a lot of screws, is it really really sturdy? In theory a screw in alternating corners (TL+BR then TR+BL) would have sufficed?

How did you flatten out the base of the legs? Because while it was laying on its side, you could see that there were a few boards that were not flush.

Looks good. Just one question - how you'll avoid screw to screw contact? Aren't they ruined by each other or how's that literally fixed together? I would rather see combination of glue and screws. The thing misses more details about assembling it and also people here asked some questions with no reaction...

I love this idea. One silly question though, Why have the 1/8" overhang on each leg end? Why not just all flush to the ground?

The overhang gives it a little different profile, but I think you need an extra board to add the extra 1/8" to all 12 of the 13.5"ers. Cut list I see is... 1) 6 boards with 1x60 and 2x17 2) 2 boards with 1x60, 1x17, 1x13.625 3) 1 board with 7x13.5 4) 1 board with 5x13.5 and 2x13.625 The two boards in #3 and #4 are the problem. Even if you don't square the end, the extra 1/8" 5-7 more times puts you over 96", once you factor in an 1/8" blade kerf. You could technically do a couple more pieces at the longer length. I may do 2 or 3 longer on each end and the middle shorter

I had the same question but I just made it and because woods are not perfectly squared it is hard to flush all of them. Just having four flushed is a lot easier than having all of them flushed. otherwise it just take one for the bench to wobble.

Thanks! You could use cedar or treated boards and you should be just fine...

Use cedar, cypress, or redwood. The problem with treated wood is it’s a surface treatment only. Once the board is cut, the exposed interior is not treated, therefore consider an additional expense to treat those areas.

Nice design! I would never drill into a workpiece directly over a finished floor. Also, why not build it on saw horses or a bench?

H!! hey I have a question, is there a reason for leaving the vertical pieces on the far ends a weee bit longer than the rest? I mean the external or exposed vertical pieces in front and back...being a weee bit longer. Thanks for all the great stuff!

Hi! Nice project! I'm gonna try and do one! I was just wondering if there is something wrong, .... if the 60s are 4" and the first small piece is 13 5/8 and the 2nd small piece is 17" then the overhang should be 5/8" and not 1/8" ¿Right? I normally use cm and i'm trying to convert it... thats why my doubts....

Hi thanks for checking! A 4" board in the US is in actuality only 3 1/2" (confusing I know). Hope this helps!

I am building three of these but with Im alternating between 2x4s with a 1x4 spacer. I have completed one and am building the second bench and they are both twisted. I have tried go replace the pieces that I think are causing the problem but haven’t been able to untwist it. I’ve searched all over KZfaq in hopes I could find a method but to no avail… can anyone help me?

I used pine boards for this. Are you predrilling the holes before screwing? That should solve the splitting issue.

Why do you have leave the two end foot board longer? like 1/2 inch longer than the rest

It avoids the possibility of rocking, the longer pieces act as legs rather than trying to have all of the pieces line up exactly.

I tried this project. Not as easy as I thought. Unfortunately you need to have lumber from the big box store that is Both straight and not cupped. Good luck finding that! Great idea but needs flat and straight wood otherwise you will have a lot of sanding and filling of gaps which is very time consuming.

The slightly longer pieces on the ends will act as the four legs for the bench. If they were all the same size they would need to line up perfectly to avoid wobbling.

I'm curious why you wouldn't just use glue for everything. Just get glue that cures a bit slower. Put all together and clamp or set something heavyish on top, both legs. No screws no hole fill.

My thoughts too. That’s a lot of screws (expensive) and glue would make the sides/legs bind into a single slab much better.

Mhm assumption is for stability. Ground won’t be perfectly flat that you sit the bench on, the elevation change should help the bench from rocking instead of all the feet being the same length. Just my guess
