Thank you for your treasure trove of Big Island guide videos, it has been a tremendous help with my trip in March 2023. The last few videos I watched dated in 2022 needed a 4WD to get to Kua Bay, as there is an unpaved road. Is that still a necessity?

Thank you for your feedback! Kua Bay here (Coordinates you can paste into map software: 19.81097176090037, -156.0076131192955), has a paved road to get to it along with a paved parking lot at the bottom. No 4WD is required for this paved road.

Thanks for the great info and tips! Any thoughts on the green sand beach? We're planning to hike down.

That is a great beach! It’s well off the beaten path but worth the visit due to its uniqueness. There is a several mile off-roading trek through wide-open fields to get there from the main road. Some hike in , others ride in, and others drive in. If you’re planning to hike there and back my advice is go early before it is too hot due to the openness of the area with no shade hiking to and from. It is a beautiful beach though and well worth the visit. The only reason it didn’t make my list here is due to the accessibility not being easy. Enjoy!

We are planning our vacation and found your great video. How is the snorkling weather around this time? I am most interested in Mak beach and Kekaha Kai State beach. For those two places, I know we have to do some walking to get to the beach but where is a safe place to park for these trails? TIA

The best time of the year to snorkel in Hawaii is traditionally May-September. There are plenty of times during other months that are great for snorkeling as well. May-September is simply the most consistent weather that is good for snorkeling. The two best ways to get to Mak Beach are: #1 via Kua Bay: Take Highway 19 north of Kailua-Kona and Kona International Airport. The paved road to Kua bay is between mile markers 88 and 89. Follow this paved road for about 1 mile until it ends at a parking area. There are restrooms and picnic tables behind the beach. There is no water available. You can then walk about 1.8 miles from here along the shoreline to Mak Beach. #2 is a bit more direct and doesn’t hit Kua Bay first: Take Highway 19 north of Kailua-Kona and Kona International Airport. The dirt road to Makalawena Beach is located just south of the paved road to Kua Bay, between mile markers 88 and 89. 2WD vehicles can park just off of the highway before the road begins to get rough. 4WD vehicles can continue for 1.6 miles of very rough road to a gate and small parking area just north of Makalawena Beach. It’s important to keep in mind to bring a lot of water and good footwear for these walks and a day at the beach. The black lava is hard and hurts if fallen on or if stubbing a toe on it. It also gets really hot walking across that lava. Enjoy!

Best snorkeling perhaps in all of Hawaii is called Two Step. Hawaiian beaches are best May to September. Rough waves in winter and the water in winter is actually somewhat cold!😮 Not horrible but some chill to it...😊

The hike from Hwy 19 parking area to Makawalena Beach is 45- 60 minutes (not 20 minutes). Wear sneakers, not sandals. Do not attempt unless you are sure-of-foot (the path is extremely uneven toward the end). Stay on the path and don’t try to take a shortcut through the lava field (it looks like there’s a clear path toward the top but it’s not). Lastly, the payoff is spectacular. Thanks for the recommendation!

I did the walk in Crocs in about 20 minutes (Crocs is not recommended for first-timers). The path is pretty clear and if not u can just ask somebody. Also, my 6-year-old cousin did it as well with not much problem.

Yes, crocs aren’t recommend for a first timer. Yes, the spirit of Aloha is usually present along most of these hikes.

good reviews, thanks! It would have been helpful to see more video of the beach's rather than pictures or you talking in the same location (maybe talking at the beach would be more stimulating). It would also be helpful to put the names of the beaches rather than Beach #

Makalawena and KUA and Maunea Kea are all you need. Unless you want a black sand beach. Cheers.

You forgot the best beach, Green Sands, I'm shocked you didn't put that in. I lived in Kona for several years. A beach map is at local grocery stores. Mauna Lanai and Kukio are also secluded coved beaches. Very secluded, you have to go thru a gate, but do not stop in the neighborhood, or you will be asked to leave. Just go straight to the beach.

Green Sands is a truly unique one. I decided not to include it due to some of the limitations in reaching this location and the length involved in hiking in to this location or the “off-road” driving. It’s a stunning beach and great place though. Thanks for sharing.

DEFINITELY visit this beach: The black sand beach at KEHENA. The majority of the beaches, you featured, are in or near the Kona area. There are beaches on the opposite of the island that have been left off (and are exceptional beaches). EVERYONE should visit the Kehena black sand beach in the Pahoa/Puna area of the island. This beach has no official signage and is sometimes kept "secret" by the locals. It has MANY reasons for a being a beach location one should definitely not miss: black sand beach, whale spotting (seasonal), great swimming, nestled in an exceptional cove of lava rock formation, 20 minutes nearby is the "hot ponds beach", nearby small village of Puna, less than one hour from Hilo.

Yes, this video is by no means exhaustive in including all of the many, many great beaches on the Big Island but part of my goal was to share beaches that were reasonably accessible while also still sharing some that were more off-the-beaten-path. Some people like secluded beaches and others like busier beaches. I share some of each in this video.

Hapuna beach was disappointing. Went yesterday. The sand isn’t white but more light brown. Lani Kai or waimanalo has white sand. The water there was not turquoise but darker. Not great.
